Enterprise network needs are rapidly changing

• Traffic is increasingly delivered to destinations outside the enterprise network

• Coevolve data show 70-80% of MPLS traffic on enterprise WANs destined for Internet – combination of business-critical public cloud traffic and web browsing

• 75% of Coevolve customers + prospects are trialing or have rolled out Office 365 on a global basis

• Innovative IT departments are moving IT infrastructure to Azure and Amazon Web Services at a rapid pace

• Business units often make decisions on enterprise-wide applications without close involvement from IT – Salesforce, Workday, SuccessFactors, etc.

The problem with traditional WAN solutions

• High costs for routers, switches and WAN circuits particularly MPLS & WAN Optimization

• Backup capacity is wasted almost all of the time due to inflexible active / passive designs

• No seamless way to add capacity and availability using mobile, satellite, etc.

• Policy based Routing only provides limited route-based traffic redirection (not application-based)

• Never-ending demand for more bandwidth, regardless of geography

• New traffic flows are not well catered for – branch-cloud, branch-branch, DC-cloud

• Device-level configurations require highly skilled engineers, lots of opportunity for human error

• No concept of adding service layers to the network – only complex device-level configuration

The WAN is now one of the biggest obstacles to the agility and flexibility that enterprises require in their IT environments

SD-WAN: A new approach to network solution design• To address the challenges associated with traditional networks, newer WAN products, services and designs have

emerged

• These are based on the concepts of Software Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization

o Software Defined Networking (SDN) means separating the control plane of the network from the data plane, allowing a centralized piece of software to assume responsibility for controlling the whole network. Traditional approach: device level configurationsSDN approach: centralized software platform for network-wide orchestration and management

o Network Function Virtualization (NFV) means applying virtualization technologies to components of the network to provide functionality in a pre-packaged form rather than building every component individually

• A primary goal of next-generation WANs is to deliver an enterprise grade network using primarily low-cost, Internet-based infrastructure without the risks and complexities traditionally associated with this technology

• With the ongoing shift to public cloud applications and infrastructure, the next-generation network provides seamless, controlled and measured connections to these destinations – far beyond the traditional split tunneling / policy-based routing approach in current networks

• There are several new technology vendors competing in this SD-WAN space. Coevolve closely monitors the available options and maintains a high level of technology and vendor awareness for its solution development

Some of the main technology vendors in the growing SD-WAN space:

How can we articulate the TCO benefits of the next-generation WAN?

Traditional Network Next-Generation WAN

Month

Procurement Implementation Steady State

Short-term cost increase due to dual running 30% savings

post implementation

50%+ savings due to future bandwidth increases

Short-term reduction in costs on traditional network due to competitive pressure at end of 3-5 year contract, but increases due to bandwidth growth

Longer-term savings primarily due to significantly greater bandwidth

available in next-generation WAN (and not with 3-5 year contract lock-in)

Static, inflexible WAN Agile next-generation WAN

Out-of-the-box application performance visibility

• Next-generation WAN solutions such as the VeloCloud offering can classify 3,000+ applications and cloud services without the need to deploy separate hardware or software probes in each branch location

• Self-learns new applications that are added to a cloud-based application database

• Application aware business policy control for services such as Firewall, Intelligent Multipath and Smart QoS

• Cloud scale analytics – self learning for intelligent circuit, gateway and path selections including avoidance of network congestion points

• This application-level visibility allows reporting on user experience achieved for each key application on the network using data-driven quality metrics

SD-WAN solves many problems – but creates a big one

Network agility & elasticity

Quickly change traffic flows and application priority to meet changing business requirements, with no device-level configurations

Application visibility SD-WAN solutions often include deep packet inspection to classify applications; detailed analytics

Cloud application performance

Increased use of public Internet connectivity provides a more direct, high performance path to cloud services

Total available bandwidthInternet infrastructure is usually sold in higher capacities, with periodic upgrades of bandwidth unlike bandwidth-constrained private IP networks

Network costTCO reductions of 50% or more are frequently seen by migrating to SD-WAN solutions. Bandwidth costs and device management overheads are reduced

Vendor ManagementIncreased use of Internet connectivity generally means more ISPs to manage (commercially and operationally) and smaller agreements mean less leverage

Addressing thevendor management challenge

Coevolve’s approach to vendor management

• Significant team experience in the lifecycle management of 3rd party providers

• Flexible, modular managed service – can coexist with existing in-house management and augment capabilities to improve service levels

• Provide single point of contact for day to day management of locally-contracted services such as ISPs

• Letter of Agency established with each provider to enable Coevolve to act on client’s behalf

• Commercial and operational dashboards to provide a straightforward consolidated view across all ISPs

We have designed the Coevolve business from the ground up to be well suited to thetechnical, commercial and operational management of third party ISPs and other local vendors

Router Router Router Router

SD-WAN Overlay Network

Incident / Change Management Processes

Contracted locally, Letter of Agency established with each vendor for management

Poll public IP for status; no need to access existing configuration

Vendor Management service does not impact SD-WAN service; operates as normal

Single point of contact for client; Coevolve manages multiple process with each underlying vendor

Building the roadmap:how do you get there?

Building a roadmap for the next-generation WAN

i. Identify an internal project sponsor to help drive outcomes

ii. Identify industry peers that have experience with the technology

iii. Identify high-level goals (TCO savings, application performance improvements)

iv. Identify non-core, risk free elements of the environment to trial the technology (back-up links a great place to start)

v. Determine expectations and steps for a trial or POC

1. Getting started 2. Understand where the technology fits

i. Identify applications, locations and user groups experiencing performance issues

ii. Review the priority of the internal and cloud-based application portfolio

iii. Review existing supplier contracts to understand timeline flexibility

iv. Review capex investments – determine end of life for existing WAN Op, firewalls, routers, etc.

v. Update network architecture documentation for clear understanding

3. Prepare for transition

i. Update business case with revised assumptions

ii. Develop detailed technical design

iii. Create an implementation roadmap aligned to the understanding developed in initial assessments

iv. Create a strategy document for the technology team and business to jointly understand

v. Develop communication plan for regional / local IT and other stakeholders

4. Implementation

i. This is not a traditional procurement approach

ii. Do not look to enter into long term (5 year) agreements – 24-36 months maximum

iii. Simplifying the operational approach will enable the IT team to keep an eye on the horizon and work to deliver business value rather than struggle with operational challenges

iv. A phased migration will allow the adoption of the new solution to be aligned with existing contract end dates
