WHY WE ARE SMARTER THAN CHICKENSToronto, Aug 21 (IANS) Researchers have discovered that a smallchange in a protein in our cells could hold the key to how we evolvedto become the smar test animal on the planet. The change in a proteincalled PTBP1 that can spur the creation of neurons - cells that makethe brain - could have fuelled the evolution of mammalian brains tobecome the largest and most complex among ver tebrates, the find-ings showed.A cell's ability to regulate protein diversity at any given time reflectsits ability to take on different roles in the body. The researchersearlier found that prevalence of alternative splicing (AS), wherebygene products are assembled into proteins, which are the buildingblocks of life, increases with ver tebrate complexity. So although the genes that make bodies of ver tebrates might be simi-lar, the proteins they give rise to are far more diverse in animals suchas mammals, than in birds and frogs. And nowhere is AS more wide-

spread than in the brain. "We wanted to see if AS could drive morpho-logical differences in the brains of different ver tebrate species," saidlead author of the study Serge Gueroussov, a graduate student in thelab of Benjamin Blencowe, professor at the University of Toronto inCanada. Gueroussov previously helped identify PTBP1 as a proteinthat takes on another form in mammals, in addition to the one com-mon to all ver tebrates. PTBP1's job in a cell is to stop it from becom-ing a neuron by holding off AS of hundreds of other gene products. The researchers showed that in mammalian cells, the presence of asecond, shor ter version of PTBP1 unleashes a cascade of AS events, tipping the scales of protein balance so that a cell becomes aneuron. What is more, when the researchers engineered chickencells to make the shor ter, mammalian-like, PTBP1, this triggeredAS events that are found in mammals. The study was published in thejournal Science.

INSTANT OATMEAL BREAKFASTCURBS APPETITE AT LUNCHNEW YORK, (IANS) Having a hear ty por tion of instant oatmealfor breakfast enhances satiety and feelings of fullness, therebyhelping you eat less at lunch, new research has found.A bowl of instant oatmeal helps curb food intake at lunch betterthan a leading oat-based, cold cereal -- even when each bowlprovided the same number of calories, the findings showed. The researchers found that a 250-calorie instant oatmeal serv-ing (with an additional 113 calories of skim milk) enhancedsatiety and feelings of fullness, reduced the desire to eat andled to lower caloric intake at lunch, compared to a 250-calorieserving of cold, oat-based cereal, also served with an addi-tional 113 calories of skim milk."The satiety benefits of instant oatmeal alone were impor tantfindings," said lead author Candida Rebello from LouisianaState University in the US."When we took it a step fur ther and evaluated the intake fourhours post-breakfast, we found that after consuming instantoatmeal, the par ticipants chose to eat significantly less atlunch compared to those who ate the oat-based, cold cereal,"Rebello noted. After an analysis of the types of fibre in eachcereal, the researchers suspected that the higher level of thepolysaccharides beta-glucan in the instant oatmeal contrib-uted to its satiating effect over the oat-based, cold cereal.

TRY MINIMAL MAKE-UP FORMAXIMUM IMPACTNEW DELHI, (IANS) Avoid heavy make-up and dark eyes inmonsoon to look chic and be comfortable, says an expert. AakritiKochar, beauty and make-up exper t, Oriflame India, suggestshow to get minimal make-up looks:* It is always good to wear a sun block as a good base toprotect your skin from any damage during the day. Keep thelook minimal, go for soft smudged eyeliner -- maybe browninstead of black. If you are fond of using a mascara, use awaterproof one which stays on keeping in mind the hot andhumid weather. A soft matte blush for the day is also a goodaddition to the look. Lips with soft pink and coral can add to thefresh look.* Using a BB cream instead of a foundation is also a good idea since it isan all-in-one moisturizer, SPF, foundation, compact and primer. A good BBcream can compensate for multiple layers since in one layer it does it all. Itis light and comfortable on the skin.

TIPS ON WEARING CHINOS IN ALL SEASONSNEW DELHI, (IANS) Chinos, which are casual cotton trousersmade from a fabric called chino, can pass off as daily wear, butthey can also be jazzed up for the right season and occasion, ifchosen well.Anurag Rajpal, director and CEO of online shopping websiteAmerican Swan, has doled out some tips:* For everyday wear: On a casual day, wear a tanned colouredchino, fold it at the bottoms with an Oxford Cloth Button Downshir t, pair it up with some cool brown boots and don't forget toadd a stainless steel watch to your wrist.* For office: Adding chinos to office wear can give a lot toexperiment with the menswear elements. A simple tan coloured

chinos with a button down checks shir t (preferably a redshade), a plain base knitted tie, brown leather belt and nicelypolished brown shoes for the per fect day at work.* For summers: Beating the heat in chinos can never go wrong.Team up your classic tan chinos with a navy blue, white stripedtee. Add a tint of yellow colour to your wrist with a funky watchand a braided leather belt around your waist. Complete the lookwith crisp white sneakers.* For winters: Chinos simply work well in all seasons. Darkcoloured chinos fit absolutely well in this season. Team up witha layering of white full sleeved royal blue V-neck sweater. Don'tforget to add brown boots to accentuate the look.

HOT WATER TREATMENT CANIMPROVE TASTE OF TOMATOESNEW YORK, (IANS) Dipping green tomatoes in hot water for fiveminutes and then allowing them to cool at room temperature coulddramatically improve the flavour of this popular food, says a new study."Ideally, tomatoes should be picked ripe and then sold immediately, asthey are at farm stands," said Jinhe Bai from the US Department ofAgriculture. But this is not always possible for commercially sold to-matoes, which are often stored and then shipped over long distances. To prevent tomatoes from becoming too ripe before they reach thestore, growers pick them when they are still green. Packers then usea gas called ethylene to trigger fruit ripening, and after that the tomatoesare stored and shipped at low temperatures. The problem is that chill-ing tomatoes degrades their flavour, Bai pointed out.In an effort to improve the flavour quality, the researchers developed aslightly different method. "To produce a better tasting tomato, we addeda hot water pre-treatment step to the usual protocol that growers fol-low," he explained. "We found that this pre-treatment step preventsflavour loss due to chilling," Bai said. The researchers dipped green tomatoes in hot water (about 52 degreesCelsius) for five minutes and then let them cool at room temperature.Next they chilled the fruit to between five and 13 degrees Celsius, thetemperatures commercial producers use for shipping.

E-CIGARETTES CAN TRIGGERSMOKING IN TEENSNEW YORK, (IANS) While electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes)are generally assumed to be less harmful, new research hasfound that teenagers who use these cigarettes are more likelyto smoke conventional cigarettes, cigars and hookahs over thenext year compared with nonusers.Electronic cigarettes, devices that deliver inhaled aerosol usu-ally containing nicotine, are becoming increasingly popular, par ticularly among adolescents."Some teens may be more likely to use e-cigarettes prior tocombustible tobacco because of beliefs that e-cigarettes arenot harmful or addictive," the study authors noted.Adam Leventhal from University of Southern California, LosAngeles, and colleagues examined whether adolescents whorepor ted ever using e-cigarettes were more likely to initiate theuse of combustible tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, and hookah)during the subsequent year.

NEW YORK, (IANS) Shor ter mothers are at an increased risk of deliv-ering smaller, premature babies, says a new study. "Our finding showsthat a mother's height has a direct impact on how long her pregnancylasts," said Louis Muglia from Cincinnati Children's Hospital MedicalCentre in Ohio, US."The explanation for why this happens is unclear but could depend notonly on unknown genes but also on woman's lifetime of nutrition andher environment," Muglia noted. Worldwide, 15 million babies areborn preterm, and more than one million die due to complicationsof an early bir th, the study highlighted. Babies who survive anearly bir th face serious and lifelong health problems, includingbreathing problems, jaundice, vision loss, cerebral palsy and in-

tellectual delays. The researchers looked at 3,485 Nordic women and their babies, andfound that maternal height, which is determined by genetic factors, helped shape the fetal environment, influencing the length of preg-nancy and frequency of prematurity. In contrast, bir th length and bir thweight are mainly influenced by transmitted genes."That a woman's height influences gestational length, independent ofthe genes she passes on that determine fetal size, is a major findingby our research networks, and the first of what we expect to be manygenetic contributions," Joe Leigh Simpson, senior vice president forresearch at the March of Dimes Prematurity Research Centre in theUS, noted. The study was published in the journal PLOS Medicine.

A cup of cranberries daily canfight off colon cancer tooNEW YORK, (IANS) Not just four cups of coffee, as new researchsuggested this week, just a daily cup-full of the cranberry superfruit can also combat colon cancer. To reach this conclusion, researchers fed cranberry extracts to mice with colon cancerand found that their tumours diminished in size and number.Identifying the therapeutic molecules in the fruit could lead to abetter understanding of its anti-cancer potential, they said."Colon cancer may offer a par ticularly good target for a dietarytreatment. Cranberry extracts may also afford protection towardother cancers," said Catherine Neto from University of Massa-chusetts, Dartmouth. Neto and colleagues found that chemicalsderived from cranberry extracts could selectively kill off colontumour cells in laboratory dishes. This is approximately equivalent to a cup a day of cranberries ifyou were a human instead of a mouse. We have identified sev-eral compounds in cranberry extracts over the years that seemedpromising, but we've always wanted to look at what happenswith the compounds in an animal model of cancer," Neto noted."Cranberry constituents and metabolites should be bioavailableto the colon as digestion proceeds," she added. However, she is not sure someone could get the same benefitsfrom juice which lacks some of the components in the skin of thecranberry. Neto is now looking deeper into the cranberry to see ifshe can isolate individual components responsible for its anti-cancer proper ties. The team were set to describe their approachat the national meeting and exposition of the American ChemicalSociety (ACS) in Boston this week.

Eat hot chillies daily to stay in shapeSYDNEY, (IANS) If you love to include chillies in your diet, you have another healthy reason to do so. According to astudy, consumption of hot chillies can prevent overeatingvia an action on nerves in the stomach, thus curbing obesityin chilli lovers.Researchers from University of Adelaide discovered that a high-fat diet may impair impor tant hot chilli receptors located in thestomach that signal fullness. The stomach stretches when it isfull, which activates nerves in the stomach to tell the body thatit has had enough food."We found that this activation is regulated through hot chillipepper or TRPV1 receptors in the stomach," said associateprofessor Amanda Page from University of Adelaide's school ofmedicine. The team also found that TRPV1 receptors can bedisrupted in high fat diet-induced obesity. It is known from previous studies that capsaicin, found in hotchillies, reduces food intake in humans. "We discover that de-letion of TRPV1 receptors dampens the response of gastricnerves to stretch - resulting in a delayed feeling of fullness andthe consumption of more food," Page explained. Therefore, par tof the effect of capsaicin on food intake may be mediated viathe stomach.

Even moderate drinkers are at high cancer riskNEW YORK, (IANS) Even light to moderate drinking - up to one a dayfor women and up to two a day for men - may increase your risk ofcontracting cancer, especially if you are a smoker, says a new study. In women, just a drink a day can increase risk of alcohol-relatedcancer, mainly breast cancer.Risk of alcohol related cancers is also higher among light and moder-ate drinking men, but only in those who have ever smoked, the find-ings showed. No association was found in men who had never smoked."However, for women who have never smoked, risk of alcohol relatedcancers (mainly breast cancer) increases even within the range of upto one alcoholic drink a day," the study said.Heavy alcohol consumption has been linked to increased risk of sev-eral cancers. However, the association between light to moderatedrinking and overall cancer risk is less clear. So a team of US re-searchers based at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health andBrigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, set out to determine whetherlight to moderate drinking is associated with an increased risk ofcancer. They used data from two large US studies that tracked the health of

88,084 women and 47,881 men for up to 30 years. During the follow-up period, a total of 19,269 and 7,571 cancers were diagnosed inwomen and men, respectively.

WORKING OVERTIMEINCREASES STROKE RISKLONDON, (IANS) People who work longer than the standard 35to 40 hour week run significantly higher risk of stroke, says astudy. The study involving over 600,000 individuals found thatlonger people work, the higher their chances of a stroke.Working 55 hours or more per week is linked to a 33 per centgreater risk of stroke and a more modest 13 percent increasedrisk of developing coronary hear t disease compared with work-ing for standard seven to eight hours in a five-day week, thefindings showed."Health professionals should be aware that working long hoursis associated with a significantly increased risk of stroke, andperhaps also coronary hear t disease," said one of the research-ers Mika Kivimaki, professor of epidemiology at University Col-lege London. The study published in the journal Lancet found that comparedwith people who worked standard hours, those working be-tween 41 and 48 hours had a 10 per cent higher risk of stroke, and those working 49 to 54 hours had a 27 percent increasedrisk of stroke. The researchers did a systematic review and meta-analysis ofpublished studies and unpublished individual-level data exam-ining the effects of longer working hours on cardiovascular dis-ease up to August 20, 2014. The study involved 603,838 menand women from Europe, the US, and Australia.Although the causal mechanisms of these relationships need tobe better understood, the authors suggest that increasing health-risk behaviours, such as physical inactivity and high alcoholconsumption, as well as repetitive triggering of the stress re-sponse, might increase the risk of stroke.

Eating tomatoes do flare up gout painWELLINGTON, (IANS) Researchers from University of Otagohave for the first time found a biological basis for the belief thateating tomatoes can cause gout to flare up in some people.Gout is a painful and debilitating form of ar thritis that affectsapproximately three times more men than women.Once a person has gout - higher levels of uric acid in theblood - eating cer tain foods can cause their gout to flare upin a painful attack. "We found that the positive associationbetween eating tomato and uric acid levels was on a parwith that of consuming seafood, red meat, alcohol or sugar-sweetened drinks," explained PhD student Tanya Flynn andlead researchers.Researchers noticed that a large number of gout sufferers be-lieve tomatoes to be one of these gout trigger foods. The re-searchers surveyed 2,051 New Zealanders with clinically-veri-fied gout. Of these people 71 per cent reported having one or morefood triggers. Tomatoes were listed as a trigger in 20 percent of thesecases. Tomatoes were found to be the fourth most commonly men-tioned trigger, after seafood, alcohol and red meat.

Working overtime increases stroke risk

SECRETS TO MAKE YOUR FRAGRANCE LAST LONGNEW DELHI, (IANS) Layer your smell and moisturize your skin to make your fragrance last all day, says an exper t. Rajiv Sheth, CEO and director ofperfume house All Good Scents, shares how:* Star t with a warm shower. Use a shower gel, body wash or a scented soap all over your body and then spray the fragrance once your bodybecomes dry. When you take warm shower, it causes your pores to open which when you apply the fragrance will soak up the scent better andthe fragrance will stay longer as it gets layered on top of a line extension toiletry wash.* After you have a shower, moisturize your skin with a generous amount of fragrance-free lotion or a body lotion with the same fragrance youuse. Moisturized skin blends well with the perfume ensuring long lasting fragrance. On dry skin, the fragrance will dissipate faster.* Perfumes tend to react with fluctuating body temperature throughout the day and emit scent accordingly. To maximize the smell of yourperfume, apply it on your pulse points as they tend to react with warmth of your blood and emit the fragrance accordingly. Wear the perfumeon wrist, inside of your elbows, the nape of your neck and on your cleavage. Also, never rub the area where perfume is applied as it breaksdown and diminishes the fragrance.* Depending on the fragrance and the season, it is advisable to spray a little on your clothes too, par ticularly in winters on your sweaters orpullovers for a longer lasting smell. Thumb rule for spraying - always spray the perfume approximately 15 to 20 cms away from your body.Spraying an even amount of fragrance over a large area will have longer effect than concentrating it over smaller spot on skin.Another way is to spray the fragrance in air and slowly walk into the mist. This willevenly distribute the fragrance across your body and will last longer too.

HOW TO LOOK RADIANT ON YOUR D-DAYNEW DELHI, (IANS) With a wedding date set and trousseau shopping on full swing, you need all the time you can get to make a lasting impression on the big day. The first place to star t? Your skin, says anexper t. Madhu Arora, franchise owner of Blush Clinic, New Delhi, has shared bridal tips for a glowing skin.* Eat well: Fitting into that abs-flashing lehenga is a must. But crash dieting is harmful for the body and especially the skin. Think of a well-balanced, healthy diet rich with fresh fruits, vegetables and juices.Drink two to three litres of water daily and avoid oily, fried and sugary food. Eat small meals at regular intervals. Drink green tea to flush out your system. Go for regular workouts two to three times a week. It's all about building up to the big day.Keep in mind that you have to consume three main meals and two snacks like roasted nuts, fruits and steamed or fermented food in an entire day. A heavy breakfast is necessary to star t your day.Eat carrot, apricot, spinach or green vegetables and tomato, as they contain lycopene which is good for skin.Consume walnuts as they contain fatty acids, which make hair and skin healthier.A lot vitamins and antioxidant rich foods can help to fight skin problems. Know about them and add these to your daily diet.Vitamin A: It is essential for the repair system of the cells. It helps prevent acne and gives glowing skin. Eat foods like dark green vegetables, carrot, sweet potato, pumpkin, apricot and mango.Vitamin C: Your body not only needs vitamin C to create collagen that produces skin tissue, but also requires it for healing wounds and scars. Since it a water soluble vitamin, you need to eat vitamin C richfoods everyday which include citrus fruits, berries, papaya, watermelon, pineapple, mango and vegetables such as dark and leafy greens, green pepper, tomato, lemon and bell pepper.Vitamin E: It is an excellent antioxidant which fights against the free radicals, thus preventing damage to the skin. It helps to revive the skin cells. You can get vitamin E from almond, walnut, olive oil, sunflowerseed and whole grain. Eating these vitamin E-rich foods will help you cleanse your skin naturally.* A monthly facial is a must: The skin benefits immensely from consistency. One facial close to the wedding is not ideal. Let the benefits build up with a regular treatment.* Say bye-bye to unwanted hair: If you wish to go for laser hair removal, make sure you plan your sittings well in advance.
