FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Everything Counts Dear Members of the De La Salle Community, Welcome to Term 4.

This is a most significant time for our Year 12 students in particular who have just one week of class time left prior to the commencement of their final examinations on Wednesday, 30 October. As a school community, we wish them well and hope that they will perform to the best of their ability. Most importantly, their time as students of De La Salle is rapidly coming an end and we will have the opportunity at a Graduation Mass and Valedictory Dinner to be held on Thursday, 17 October to thank them for what they have contributed individually and collectively to the College during their time with us. Of course, some students will be acknowledged for their outstanding achievement in the academic domain this year, while others will be lauded for their exceptional contribution to the rich and varied co-curricular life of the school. However, let us remember that “everything counts”, not only in the many curricular and co curricular facets of the school. All of our students from Year 4-12 should be acknowledged as contributing, supportive, encouraging human beings giving their best to our school and to the wider community. One eminent educator wrote recently: “The majority of us lead quiet, unheralded lives as we pass through this world. There will be most likely be no ticker tape parades for us, no monuments created in our honour. But that does not lessen our possible impact, for there are scores of people waiting for someone just like us to come along, people who will appreciate our compassion, our encouragement, who will need our unique talents. Someone who will live a happier life because we took the time to share what we had to give. Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” If this advice resonates with our Year 12 cohort as they prepare to leave De La Salle, they will be far more likely not only to live more productive and satisfying lives themselves, but also they have the potential to add meaning and enjoyment to the lives of those who are ignored and who live on the margins of our society. This is truly what we would hope for our Lasallian graduates as they prepare to move on to the next stage of their lives.

ICT INFORMATION FOR 2014 Please see below information regarding transferring ownership of Netbooks and requirements for student technology in 2014. Netbook Ownership Netbooks purchased through Digital Education Revolution funding in 2010 were given to students in Years 9, 10 and 11 to establish a 1:1 computer to student ratio. At the commencement of the program the ICT Committee resolved to transfer ownership of the Netbook from the school to the student at the end of 2013. By accepting ownership, students are agreeing to remove the installed software once they exit the College. If students require assistance to do this they may request a DVD containing the Windows 7 Starter Operating System from the College’s IT Services personnel. An external USB DVD drive is required. Note: one week's notice must be given before requests will be fulfilled. Students may return their Netbooks to the College if they do not wish to accept ownership. Students who damaged their Netbooks and have not paid for repairs are excluded from the transfer of ownership. Student Technology in 2014 The College is currently investigating the next phase of the 1:1 program to commence in 2015. Parents of students in Years 9 to 12 in 2014 are advised that the Netbook is the preferred device to bring to school. In the event that this is not possible another device may be brought in its place provided notification is given to respective Year Level Coordinators (mobile phones are excluded). It is important that parents understand that this is an interim arrangement only for the next 12 months in the light of new arrangements being made for the recommencement of the 1:1 program in 2015 and are advised not to purchase new devices if at all possible. Apple iPads for Year 7 and 8 students in 2014 In 2013, the ICT Committee initiated a trial of parent purchased iPads for Year 7 students. The trial has been successful from the perspective that students readily bring their iPads to school and the iPads have been robust and reliable. From 2014, parent purchased iPads are the required mobile technology for all students in Years 7 & 8. Primary Student Technology in 2014 An interim arrangement for the provision of technology for Grades 4-6 is being made by providing a class set of Netbooks for the sole use of Primary students. The Netbooks will be housed in a powered trolley located in the Tiverton Library and may be booked as a normal resource for Primary classes only.

RESPONSIBLE TRANSPORT USE As many of our students travel to and from school daily by public transport they are regularly reminded to be mindful of their behavior and language when using public transport and especially when they are wearing the De La Salle colors. It is pleasing to be able to report that most students do show courtesy towards members of the public and exhibit pride in their school when travelling. Students are also reminded to be aware of their obligation to be “honest citizens” and “pay their way” when using public transport. Fare evasion is a growing community problem and some issues around this can be linked to the transition from Metcard to Myki ticketing systems. Students must always use their Myki tickets to “touch on” and touch off” the fare payment device, otherwise they will be travelling without a valid ticket. A Myki with a negative balance is not a valid ticket. If infringements do occur students will generally be given an initial warning for failing to carry a valid ticket. Further breaches are likely to result in an Infringement Notice being issued by Public Transport Victoria and a fine. From May this year Myki cards can be purchased and “topped up” on all metropolitan buses. On buses students must top up Myki cards with cash (the minimum top up is $1 and the maximum $20). Students with defective cards or Myki issues should call 1800 800 007 for assistance. All students are urged to take care with their use of Myki’s so that their obligations as responsible public transport users will be met.

In addition to their increasing study loads they have committed their time to planning and running various events, whilst also finding the time to visit Tiverton homerooms. It is also with immense gratitude that we thank the semester one captains for their efforts and wish that they endeavour to seek leadership positions in their future years at the College. Challenge Day On Monday 9 September the College celebrated a day that ‘(brought) colour’ to the daily lives of the De La Salle students. This event was orgainised to raise money for ‘Challenge’ in the name of Magnus Urban; a Year 6 student who was diagnosed with Leukemia earlier in the year. We are thrilled to announce that due to the generosity and involvement of all the staff and students of the College an impressive $3000.00 was raised for ‘Challenge’. This money was raised through various events such as Casual Dress, Egg-and-Spoon Races and Three-Legged Races. In addition to this there was a sausage sizzle and the sale of Krispy Kreme donuts. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (Collins St, Melbourne) for their generous donation of 20 dozen donuts, Ashton Agar for donating a signed ‘Perth Scorchers’ jersey and Jason Smith for signing a basketball that was kindly donated by the DLS Basketball Club. Food Collection for Social Justice Mass The generosity of the College Community never fails to impress. The last few weeks of Term Three centred around the collection of food items to be donated to the Malvern Emergency Food Program. Their primary function is to provide parcels of non-perishable, dietary-balanced food for distribution by agencies serving the Malvern and Malvern Eat communities. Two of the main organisations they work with include Waiora Community Mental Health Service and Moira Homeless Youth Accommodation Service. As a Community we donated in excess of 2000 items; a fantastic effort. The staff at the Malvern Emergency Food Program were amazed with the volume and quality of the items donated. Well done De La!

WELLBEING NEWS The Black Dog Institute is a not-for-profit, educational, research, clinical and community-oriented facility offering specialist expertise in depression and bipolar disorder. The institute’s youth website, BITE BACK (www.biteback.org.au) is specifically designed for 12-18 year olds and aims to improve their wellbeing and mental fitness by sharing real life personal stories and providing interactive activities built upon mindfulness, gratitude and other positive psychology principles. This resource has been added to the list of resources that are able to be accessed via Moodle. Click on the “student wellbeing” link and scroll down to “assistance agencies” and then “websites”.

PARENTS’ NETWORK AGM Our AGM will be held on Monday, 21 October at 7.30pm in the Tiverton Campus Boardroom. We are always looking for general committee members. This entails a commitment of attending meetings once a month during the school calendar and contributing time to the preparation and running of the social/fundraising events as decided by the committee. This year we have a number of executive committee positions that are vacant, President, Vice President and Treasurer. LASALLIAN SPEAKING CHALLENGE 2013

On a particularly damp night at St. Bede's College on Monday, 16 September, the annual Brother Quentin O'Halloran Lasallian Speaking Challenge was run, pitting boys from St. James, St. Bede's and De La Salle against eachother in competition to be named the best public speaker in their age group. The chosen De La Salle students had won the right to represent the College after beating other competitors in their year level and, after weeks of rehearsal with Ms. McIlroy, were ready for a strong display. At Year 7H, Trent Puddy kicked the campaign off with his speech, 'Let use work!' Trent was confident and set the tone for strong De La performances all evening. In Year 8J, Adam Crestani demonstrated how much he had grown since representing the College in the same competition last year with his speech, 'Mobile Musts', while William Wright (Year 9M) gave an impassioned plea on the topic of refugees. A recent St. Bede's convert, Matthew Mottola, showed why he as such a valuable acquisition for the school with his speech on ‘The Political Circus'. Matthew also worked with the younger students helping them prepare their speeches in the lead up, which was pleasing to see.

Trent Puddy (Year 7H)

At the senior level, Michael Hoareau (Year 11H) and Jerome Lugo (Year 12V) faced stiff competition; one of the St. Bede's students had recently won the Plain Speaking award for the whole of Victoria. Both, however, delivered extremely confident speeches and more than held their own in the competition. At the half way point in the evening, the prepared speeches were complete and the boys had given a good account of themselves. In the second half of the evening, the boys were given the impromptu topic, 'Breaking the Rules', a challenging topic for any De La Salle student. The boys were once again impressive, presenting structured and thoughtful responses that showed a good sense of humour and a capacity to think on their feet. In the end, however, the judges favoured St. Bede's on the night and it was only De La's youngest representative, Trent, who claimed victory, taking home the Year 7 award. It was a positive story overall, with plenty of optimism amongst the staff and students about future events. The leadership shown by some of the older students bodes well for coming years and the younger students' enthusiasm and confidence was excellent. Congratulations to all of the boys and we can now look forward to our chance to claim home victory when De La Salle plays host to the event next year.

VCE MEDIA AWARDS NIGHT A touch of Hollywood came to De La Salle College as staff and students gathered in the St Miguel Theatre for the 2013 Media Awards Night, co-hosted by George Banks (Year 12M) looking dashing in his tuxedo. Year 12 students have been planning and producing their films since the start of the year so it was a fantastic opportunity for them to have the fruits of their labour premiered on the big screen. Many of this year’s films explored a range of facets of teenage life, focusing on themes such as imagination and strength through adversity.

ACC CROSS COUNTRY After finishing 3rd in Division 1 since 2009, our 60 strong 2013 ACC team was hoping to break into the Top 2 schools. Despite the best efforts of all of our De La Salle competitors, we recorded our fifth consecutive overall 3rd placing behind St Bede’s and the winning school, St Bernard’s. Once again, there were some very brave and impressive individual performances at the Carnival and the De La Salle runners listed below finished in the Top 10 (at least 100 competitors per event) place getters in their respective events: Cooper Joyce (7S) – 6th in Under 14 Zak Hawker (9M) – 7th in Under 15 Brodie Muller (10S) – 7th in Under 16 Liam O’Callaghan (11H) – 6th in Under 17 Jack Thornton (12J) – 4th in Senior Chris Carberry (12J) – 6th in Senior Zane Hutter (12H) – 10th in Senior As well as our 3 Top 10 finishers in the Senior event, our next 5 Senior runners finished in the Top 20. This stellar team effort means that our Year 12 boys are the Senior ACC Champions for 2013. This is a most fitting way for these 10 boys to finish their ACC Cross country careers! On behalf of all students who were part of our ACC Cross Country Squad, I would sincerely like to thank the staff listed below for their time, effort, commitment and enthusiasm for Cross Country this term to ensure that our runners were well trained and prepared for the “Big Dance”: Tim Curran, Peter Crellin, Peter Larsen, Simon Brown, Chris Church, Tom Curry, Ray Leetham. With our best performed age group leaving us this year, the remainder of our current squad now face the challenge to ensure that we remain in the top half of schools in Division 1 ACC Cross Country in 2014. This will only be achieved through maximum commitment and dedication to train for as long and as hard as possible.

Sport and Recreation Cup The above lifters will be competing in the Sport and Recreation Cup at De La Salle on 25 October – spectators welcome. The competition runs all day in the College Gymnasium. Youth Weightlifting Team We have been advised that James Delaney 11D has been selected to compete for Australia in the Youth Weightlifting Team to compete in Malaysia from 23 November to 1 December. A fantastic achievement and well deserved after all his hard work.

TERM 3 AND 4 ACC SPORT Our Year 9B Basketball Team were narrowly defeated by 2 points by Whitefriars in the Grand Final last Tuesday. After trailing by 10 points early in the match, our boys recovered very well to claw their way back into the match and actually lead with 2 minutes remaining. Whitefriars were just a bit more composed down the stretch and clinched the premiership. Thank you to Jo Dickson for coaching and managing the Year 9 Basketball Teams throughout Term 3. Jo was fortunate and very grateful to gain assistance with coaching from 2 members of our Senior Basketball Team - Jerome Lugo and Ben Ayre. Our Senior ACC Term 3 Teams have just completed the most successful season in a long time for De La Salle College. The Senior Hockey Team were only narrowly defeated in the Semi Final match and this was their only loss for the season. This meant that the Team finished in 3rd place behind St Bede's and the Premiers, St Bernard's. Well done to all the Year 11 and 12 boys who represented the College so proudly throughout the season and let's hope that the Year 11 boys can continue the momentum gained in Senior Hockey this year into 2014. Thank you to Ms Phibbs who coached and managed the Senior Hockey Squad superbly and their high finish was due in no small part to her enthusiasm, passion and expertise. The Senior Basketball A Team competed in the Grand Final on Wednesday, 4 September Vs Whitefriars. It was a very high standard match with both teams having opportunities to win the match. Unfortunately, Whitefriars just proved to be too good in the final 5 minutes to defeat us by 10 points. Our Team certainly proved to be worthy Grand Finalists and their effort and determination in the ultimate match and throughout the season was a credit to our school.

The Senior B Basketball Team won the ACC Premiership on Wednesday, 4 September defeating St Bernard's comfortably by 19 points. Despite losing one match for the season, our B Team proved very emphatically that they were the best team in the competition with an almost flawless team display in the Grand Final. Congratulations to the following members of the ACC Senior B Basketball Premiership Team: Dylan Cowan (Captain) scored 28 points in the Grand Final, Nathan Evans, Brody Ledder, Jack Hanley, Tom Fisher, Kruger Thomson, Michael Hoareau, Will Rennie, Brad Wildoer, Joel Stewart (missed GF due to injury).

My sincere thanks goes to Mr Larsen who was the "driving force" behind Senior Basketball all season and was great support for me in my role as Coach. ACC Sport continues in Term 4 with Year 7 - 10 Cricket, Tennis and Volleyball. OLD COLLEGIANS

De La Salle Old Collegians Amateur Football Club For those of you graduating from junior football in 2013 can I ask that you consider the De La Salle Old Collegians Amateur Football Club and its under 19 program. De La Salle is one of very few clubs that has two under 19 teams. In addition the De La Salle seniors compete in Premier ‘A’ Section of the VAFA so you will be joining a club that provides a pathway to the highest level. The club has a proud history and a proven record of success. Both the Blues (Premier Division) and Golds (South Division) have won flags in recent years. Since 2004, the Blues have contested 8 grand finals for 6 flags in what is recognised as the best underage competition in the state outside of the TAC. The Blues were Premiers in 2012 and our South division side have also tasted success with a recent premiership and a Grand Final appearance in 2012. Certainly a fairly high degree of ability and commitment would be required to play at the Premier level with South division also of a very good standard. Naturally the College is our strongest and best recruiting ground, however we welcome players from all schools and backgrounds. If you have any friends or current team-mates looking for a club to play with in 2014, they would be most welcome.
