FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear members of the College community, At this time of the year the College is in exam mode with our senior students doing their post-exam Headstart program - the initial phase of their 2013 VCE studies. November has been a busy time in the College for everyone. Our Term 4 ACC program has been completed and the enthusiasm for participation remains very strong in our boys. I am sure that all of them will notice the retirement of Rick Ponting this week and well before they may learn of the UN vote on Palestine on the same day. Our Year 12 students have completed their VCE exams and reflected a

very positive and serious attitude to them all which was very gratifying. Results will be released in mid December. Centenary Year concluding: As our Centenary year comes to a close (almost), we look back in gratitude at all those people across the College family who made the year such a wonderful success. In particular we are grateful to the Centenary Committee: Robyn Brasher, Patsy Blight, Genie Scott, Barry Lyons, Bernie Dunn, Kerry Martin and Tim Ford who had both the ideas and the organising capacity to make everything work so well. What a year to remember! Every student has their name recorded in our Pictorial History so if you want a book for your son for Christmas, please contact the College office. Examinations: Year 7 – 11 are in exam mode. Exams are important learning experiences for all students as they provide a fitting focus for them to reflect on what they have learned over during the semester. Sitting for exams is not always easy for some students and the process must therefore be seen as a nurturing experience for each boy and towards their VCE academic program. For that purpose the length and depth of Year 7 & 8 exams are rather different to what we ask of Year 9 & 10 students. That is deliberate. For Year 7 boys it will be the first time that they have sat for a common test/exam. In Year 9 we formalise and extend the length of exams for obvious reasons. The students are wonderful with their attitude and approach to their common testing and it is good grounding for their senior years. Exams are only one component of a student’s learning experience. Education is not actually about textbooks, classrooms or canteens. It’s about creating experiences and making connections for our boys as they grow and learn how to explore their potential. Hence even our programs reflect our desire to help boys grow from one year to the next; to help boys learn to identify their strengths and weaknesses; to help boys come to accept each other for who they are and not determine their friends by money, holiday opportunities or the house they live in. Building respect for each other in a learning environment and helping all boys to learn, to live and to lead is an approach that we hope De La Salle has reflected this year in all that we have provided for our boys. Respect is the central notion of our behavior management. Respect for each other is the desire of all who are involved in Lasallian education. At present the College is preparing to demolish our flats at the rear of the senior campus – they can be seen at the rear of Malvern CG also. The deed of agreement with the Council at the time of purchase prevents us from building on the site until 2016. In the meantime the land will be leveled and an artificial surface laid to accommodate a range of appropriate sports for the interim.

We thank all families for their support during 2012. It has been an important and busy year and we trust that the school is a stronger unit for all that has taken place. I wish all families a happy and holy Christmas and may the spirit of the Christ-child who came to bring peace to our world bring that peace to you and your families.

Congratulations Each year the University of Melbourne awards students across the State who have performed strongly at Year 10. The Award covers their two years of senior schooling. We congratulate Thomas Brasher who has been announced as the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholar for De La Salle for 2013/4. Thomas is an outstanding student and richly deserves this accolade. Rest In Peace – Marie Swalwell

There are some people who live to a ripe old age and then tend to be forgotten because their good deeds were so many years before. Marie Swalwell was one of these. Marie passed away, aged 92 years, in early November and buried from St Benedicts, Burwood, where she had been a daily Mass attendee for much of her life. For many years in 1940s and 1950s, Marie was President of the former Mothers Auxiliary

and worked alongside some very special women ( Iris Loft, Pat Liston, Pat Clarke, Pat May, Kath Donegan…to name a few) who were the big money raisers for the College in a period of great need. Her three sons attended De La Salle across those years. The Auxiliary organsied the annual fete and worked alongside the Old Collegians Association in organising the Annual Blue & Gold Ball in ST Kilda Town Hall – a high point of social life in the annual calendar. The Governor of Victoria was frequently the Guest of honour. Marie retired as a member of the Mothers of Former Students (MOFS) in the early 1970s but only after she and a group of her contemporaries made the curtains for the new Brothers house on High Street in 1974. Across 35 years Marie also made many of the Brothers black robes. The MOFS still meet each year for lunch. What Marie Swalwell contributed to the development of De La Salle is immeasurable. We mourn her passing but reflect, with great gratitude, on the life of a remarkable woman, parent and supporter of DLS. May she rest in peace and may her good deeds go with her to her rich reward.

On Track Survey Report - 2012 The On Track Survey Report is produced annually by the Department of Education to provide schools with information about the destinations of their Year 12 cohort from the previous academic year. The survey was introduced in 2008 and has provided De La Salle with important information in order to assist us in preparing our students for the world beyond De La Salle and to determine pathways programs to provide our students with the best post-schooling options. Our On Track Survey results for the graduating class of 2011 are very pleasing indeed. As a comprehensive school we do not discriminate at enrolment and try to respond to all the needs of every student from enrolment to completion. We expect to see a significant group in courses other than University. We are also pleased to see that in recent years, the number going on to University had increased by 10%. It affirms the programs and pedagogy that we are building for our students in De La Salle.

Wellbeing News Parent Cybersafety Evening … and Info Thanks to all those who attended the recent cybersafety evening conducted by Susan McLean. From the feedback I have received, parents took much of value from the evening and feel that they have a greater understanding of the many aspects of online safety and feel more empowered to engage with their sons around the broader issue of the use/abuse of technology. Susan’s website is: www.cybersafetysolutions.com.au. She recommends other sites to parents. These are listed below: • www.netalert.gov.au (Australian Government site) • www.NetSmartz.org (most popular in USA. Regularly updated. Excellent content) • www.netsafe.org.nz (good info fro schools and parents. Also good for younger children) • www.ceop.gov.uk (sign up for regular monthly parent newsletters) • www.CyberTipline.org (links to key stakeholders re online safety and sexual exploitation) • www.niira.org.au (Internet Addiction help – Australia) Books relating to online safety: • “Chat Room” – the dangers of chatrooms • “Destroying Avalon” – reality of cyberbullying exposed • “Real Wired Child” – self help book for parents with practical advice • “One Child At A Time” – online grooming of children These resources are also listed on the College’s MOODLE site under the STUDENT WELLBEING link. Then go to “for parents” then “online safety.” You can access this via your son’s account. Parents will soon receive their own passwords to Moodle. All the best,

Chaplain’s Notes Congratulations: Congratulations to Owen Davies, Alain Juelg, Andrew McGaw and William Bitmead who received Eucharist for the first time at St Anthony’s Glenhuntly on Sunday, 14th October. Also a big congratulations to Sam Andrews and Jon Arnold (Year 5) who were Baptized at St Michael’s Ashburton last Sunday 28th October. Year 7 and Primary Masses: This term we celebrated Mass in Homeroom groups with the primary and Year 7 students. Father Hien invited the boys to share in the homily by exchanging their own understanding of what it means to be tolerant of others; also what friendship and love mean to them in their daily lives. The depth of understanding these young men brought to the discussion was impressive. Diary Note: Confirmation will be celebrated on Sunday, 28th July 2013. If you are planning for your son to prepare for any of the Sacraments in classes at De La Salle please send me an email: [email protected] Our Liturgical Year Has Come To An End and We Begin A New Year of Faith The season of Advent is a special time when we can take stock of what we have achieved during the year gone and what we might need to improve. It is a time of contemplation as we prepare to welcome our Saviour into our hearts at Christmas. This Sunday we begin a new liturgical year, “a year of faith” during which we listen to the Gospel of Luke. Luke makes us aware that Jesus message was not just for the Jewish community but for all people. Luke recalls the words of Isaiah who exhorts us to “prepare the way of the Lord, to make his paths straight” We are challenged in the Gospel this Sunday to examine our lives honestly and change what we need to change if we are to be ready for the new life of Christmas. As you prepare for Christmas may you and your family be blessed abundantly with the rewards of your efforts throughout 2012 and approach the New Year with joy and enthusiasm. St John Baptist de La Salle pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts forever.

Joan Ferguson, College Chaplain.

Primary News Primary Showcase On Thursday, 15 November the Primary parents were presented with a creative night of entertainment from the boys in Grade 4, 5 and 6. Every boy was involved in the production that showcased the talent that is in our primary classes. I would like to thank Mary Finn, Andrew Murrell and Nicole Muling for their support with the night.

Primary Music Concert The Primary boys had their Semester 2 Instrumental Music concert on Tuesday, 20 November. It was a highly creative production, with all boys playing a part. The combined bands were a hit on the day, along with the piano and other instrumental solos and to finish, the Grade 4 Rock Band showed that they will be a hit in the future. We thank Cindy Frost and Kelly Williams for their great support with this activity.

ACC Sport 2012 With 2012 being the College Centenary Year, we were hoping that we would celebrate this great milestone with as much DLS sporting success as possible. After fielding close to 50 ACC Sports Teams from Years 7 – 12, we managed to win 4 ACC Premierships. Our Champion Teams were: Year 8 Football (“Back to Back” Premierships) Year 7A Basketball, Year 9B Basketball and Junior Golf. Outside of ACC Competition, we won the Weightlifting Sport and Recreation Cup for the second consecutive year and it was particularly “uplifting” as the event was staged in the DLS Gym. Whilst we maintained our place in Division 1 of ACC Swimming in Term 1, we only managed to “tread water” at the 2012 Carnival finishing in 5th place for the second year in a row. Whilst we do have some talented swimmers, we really need to improve our overall swimming “depth”. This will only happen if more of our capable swimmers attend training between now and the 2013 ACC Carnival. We participated in Division 2 ACC Athletics for the first time in the history of the College in our Centenary Year which wasn’t really a fairytale script. Whilst we weren’t able to make an immediate exit from Division 2 in finishing a clear second to St Joseph’s Geelong, our team effort, enthusiasm and performance was much better than last year. We had 14 team members win individual events and DLS won 3 out of 6 x 4 x 100m Relays. We will be joined by our Brothers “by the beach” in Division 2 next year so at least the 2013 ACC Athletics Division 2 Carnival should be a classic “Lasallian Showdown”! Towards the end of Term 3, our ACC Cross Country Team had hopes of improving upon their 3rd placing from last year. Despite another honest and determined team effort, we are still “jogging on the spot” after this year’s ACC Carnival behind St Bede’s and St Bernard’s. Although we were clearly ahead of the other 3 schools in Division 1 and had many top ten event place getters, the challenge for our 60 runners next year is to “run past” at least one of the Top Two schools in 2013. Our strong involvement in ACC Sport and other sporting activities would not be possible without the willingness of the staff who coach and manage our many sporting teams. I sincerely think all of the teachers for their time, effort and enthusiasm for the ACC Sport program at De La which is of great benefit to the boys. Special thanks to Simon Brown and Tom Curry, the Sports Assistants, who have not only coached ACC Teams but been integral to the organisation and coordination of all things sport at De La this year. As we are all aware, Peter Riordan is leaving De La after 12 years of loyal, committed and passionate service at the College. Peter has not just been a fine leader for both students and staff in this time but a great supporter of the ACC Sport program. His constant encouragement and support for the DLS Sports Department is greatly appreciated and will be missed. Participation rates in ACC Sport this year have been very encouraging in Years 7 – 9 and a little spasmodic at Year 10 and Senior levels. In order to improve upon our 4 ACC Premierships this year, we need all of our ACC Teams to include not only our best sportsmen but committed, determined and enthusiastic De La boys who are passionate about the College being as successful in sport as possible.

2012 Sport & Recreation Victorian Weightlifting Cup

It was well worth the “weight” for the long awaited return of an official Weightlifting Competition to De La Salle. With De La being a powerhouse in Weightlifting for many years, the 2012 Team and Coaches approached this competition with great optimism for consecutive titles. College Team: Mr. David Hale (Weightlifting Coordinator), Frank McCormack, James Delaney, Simon Francazio (Weightlifting Coach), Levi Otto, Liam Farrell and Mr. Damian Brown (Old Collegian and Olympian). Liam finished 3rd in his weight division, Antonio 2nd and our four other DLS lifters won their respective competitions. James Delaney was also judged as the best male weightlifter at the competition. These high individual rankings ensured that DLS retained the Sport and Recreation Cup by 4 points from Mt Lilydale Mercy College. As well as the talent and strength from our DLS Representatives on the day, there is no doubt that they were inspired by the great support and encouragement that they received from the DLS students and staff. This was particularly evident during lunchtime when a large crowd gathered to watch and cheer for the DLS lifters. To highlight our very proud history in Weightlifting at De La, we were very fortunate to have Damian Brown make time to attend the competition to support not just De La Salle but the sport of weightlifting. Damian began his long and distinguished weightlifting career at DLS as a student which he continued well beyond Year 12. He represented Australia at 3 Olympic Games, 4 Commonwealth Games with a medal return of 4 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze. Damian also represented Australia at 12 consecutive World Weightlifting Championships, a World Record. As an ex DLS Staff Member as well, Damian’s presence at the Sport and Recreation Cup was greatly appreciated by everyone. The event itself would not have been possible without the organisation, effort and energy of two very passionate and committed Weightlifting enthusiasts. Dave Hale (DLS Weightlifting Coordinator) and Simon Francazio (DLS Specialist Coach) were both instrumental in the event being staged at De La as well as our success in the competition. Sincere thanks to both Dave and Simon who continue to “lift” our DLS Team to “great weights”!

De La Salle Old Collegians Amateur Football Club

For those of you graduating from junior football in 2012 can I ask that you consider the De La Salle Old Collegians Amateur Football Club and its under 19 program. De La Salle is one of the few clubs that has two under 19 teams. In addition the De La Salle seniors compete in Premier ‘A’ Section of the VAFA so you will be joining a club that provides a pathway to the highest level.

The club has a proud history and a proven record of success. Both the Blues (Premier Division) and Golds (South Division) have won flags in recent years. Since 2004 the Blues have contested 8 grand finals for 6 flags in what is recognised as the best underage competition in the state outside of the TAC. The Blues where Premiers in 2012 and our South division side have also tasted success with a recent premiership and a Grand Final appearance in 2012. Certainly a fairly high degree of ability and commitment would be required to play at the Premier level with South division also of a very good standard. Naturally the college is our strongest and best recruiting ground however we welcome players from all schools and backgrounds. If you have any friends or current team-mates looking for a club to play with in 2013 they would be most welcome. If you would like some more information about the De La Salle under 19s then contact:
