COLUMBUS STAINLESS (PTY) LTD

Columbus Stainless (Pty) Ltd established in 1966, manufactures stainless

steel flat products in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, South Africa. Acerinox,

S.A. (Spain), holds a 76% shareholding in Columbus. As the only producer

of stainless steel in Africa and the largest in the Southern Hemisphere,

Columbus Stainless produces 85% of all stainless steel flat products

consumed in South Africa and also exports 70% of its production capacity.

Columbus also offers a unique trade-marked stainless steel, namely 3CR12,

which is used world-wide in the manufacturing of rail cars, mining

equipment, bus frames and other industrial applications where corrosion

and abrasion resistance is critical for the economic life span of operations.

Columbus contributes approximately 9% of the GDP of Mpumalanga and

0.65% (First semester 2011) of the GDP of South Africa and facilitates the

employment of around 2000 people including permanent staff,

apprentices, contractors, service providers and trainees.

Downstream industries consuming stainless steel manufactured by

Columbus contributes at least a further 8% to the South African GDP, while

providing employment to approximately 29 000 people and supporting a

further estimated 175 000 people. The automotive component sector is a

key customer for Columbus’s range of products.

OUR INTERVIEW

CHIEF Executive Officer, Dave Martin highlights the importance of stainless

steel in Mpumalanga and South Africa as a whole.

“We have a long history of exporting, with about 60-70% of our products

sold to 70 countries worldwide. We thus have significant capacity available

for local beneficiation, which is the key focus for our business. I believe, we

as a country need to beneficiate more of our abundant raw materials

locally and over time ensure we are the conduit into the fast-expanding

African economy. I am convinced Africa will be a major market hopefully

within the next decade.”

Please highlight some of the company’s recent corporate social

investment initiatives.

“Our focus in Middelburg has three key points. One is school education;

we are a technically driven company and focus on mathematics and

science, and we give support in those areas by means of career expos and

career development, and also building assets like classrooms, libraries and

science labs in previously disadvantaged areas to try and encourage the

students to pursue that line of study. The second thrust is small business

development; we provide support to the business-linkage centre in

Middelburg, where they in turn provide support to emerging

entrepreneurs and black-owned companies trying to make inroads into the

big corporates. The third focus is what we call the Middelburg Stainless

Incubator, which is a number of workshops that can be used to make

stainless-steel items, and a central workshop where they can rent time on

the machines.”

What are the key focus points that will ensure the future of stainless

steel in the country?

“The government infrastructure programme is very important to South

Africa, and the stainless-steel industry. I think it would be a tragedy if

stainless steel is imported from other countries and local stainless steel is

not used to supply Transnet Engineering for their wagons, PRASA for their

coaches, and solar energy panels etc. The message we want to get across is

that stainless steel is an extremely useful material, and invaluable in our

daily lives.”

Following the sale share agreement between Marqott and Siemens in

2006, Marques headed Siemens PTD Southern Africa division under a

management contract which expired in 2007, and then moved to pursue

personal projects. With that completed It was then just a question of

timing to get back into the PTD market, and together with colleagues from

the past era and in early 2009 it was decided to form Roshqott and re-

enter the energy sector. This came about at a time when the credit crunch

and the global economic recession started to breathe fire on the world’s

economies. Notwithstanding, the reality is that , in the Southern African

region and South Africa in particular ,much still has to be done in respect

of further expansion and rehabilitation of the Country’s power grid

infrastructure , as well as construction of new capacity of about 9-

10gwatt,if we hope to meet the Country’s short term economic growth

plan ,that will ensure social and economic transformation through job and

wealth creation .

When is it ever the right time?

An ailing economy has its pains and challenges but it also presents new

and exciting opportunities. The growth forward will be driven by green

technologies where the company is hard at work forging new relationships

with both local and International companies to develop locally and

introduce new technologies.

The recession of the past years has obviously dampen the market’s spirits

but we are very confident that the African Continent and its unexplored

resources present its self with huge business and investment

opportunities ,that once the continued good news of economic recovery

set in and market sentiment shifts, the Continent will experience a boon

market for many years to come .

The company‘s project’s pipeline is in excess of R150’0 million. The pipe

line project mix extends across a challenging mix of engineering disciplines’

turn key projects, where HV/MV system’s maintenance and renewable

energy projects feature predominately.

The new company is focusing on consolidating its position in the market by

operating on a small scale but have big plans for the future, as they have

an in house project management and manufacturing experience base of

about 200 person years in the industry. The growth forward will be driven

by green technologies where the company is hard at work forging new

relationships with both local and International companies to develop

locally and introduce new technologies.

Marques says although in its infancy stage insofar Southern Africa,

renewable energy is the sector that has the capacity and scale to create

new jobs that can make a difference in the job market.

Our Government leaders’ biggest and current challenge is ,without further

delays, to meet the socio economic transformation that ensures political

and economic stability for now and future generations .We note that this

mammoth task is not of the Government’s sole responsibility and both

public and private enterprises’ have a social responsibility and duty to

create structures and systems that can deliver the much needed results

.The company for its ramping up phase period, is already planning for and

unpacking its broad based black empowerment strategy .

KNX Awards 2014

Project in Cape Town nominated to best home automation project in international awards

A home automation project in Cape Town has been nominated to the KNX Awards, which are the most relevant international awards in the building industry, regarding smart installations based on the KNX standard technology. Jesus Arias one of the members is involved in the project and he explained the following:

“This project counts on advanced solutions that makes this house the smartest in South Africa, besides the normal solutions:

- For example, the energy system (photovoltaic panels) is monitored permanently and, in case of a power outage, the home automation will disconnect secondary loads in order to achieve the best efficiency regarding the battery array.

- Another good example is the dew sensors, which prevent mold to happen in the ceilings due to the cooling ceiling system.

- Thermostats are based on PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), which is the most efficient way of controlling the heating/cooling system.

- Also one interesting feature is the ability to control the house remotely from anywhere in the world. - On top of this, all the installations are meticulously detailed and documented, and all the programming is based on

an open standard (KNX). The client will receive at the completion of the project all the files and documents related to the house.

Home and building automation is not about fancy systems, but about smart networks that control the installations in the most efficient way, avoiding energy wastage.

The project is being executed by AMC German Technology, local company specialized in home and building automation, together with the Engineering Consultant Jesús Arias García.

The ceremony of the KNX Awards will be held in Frankfurt, Germany, the first week of April, and this project is competing within the category “America, Africa and Australia”.
