Technical Material Production Notes from the Field — New Ideas on

How to Continue to Improve

THE APPROACH

The thing that gets you in doors is still names! Make sure that you‟re using lots of

names. Also, describe the people to whom you are referring by their first & last

names. In other words, don‟t just say Joe, Susie, and Willie. Instead, say things

such as “Joe Smith, the fireman across the street who has the three kids – his son

Joey plays with your son Charlie.” That statement within itself will help you get in

more doors.

It is critical after your second objection or your second: “WE‟RE NOT

INTERESTED TODAY” that you show math. Remember: „show, don‟t tell.‟ Just

say, “Gosh, Mrs. Jones, I don‟t even need to come in to show it to you.” Pull it out

right there at the door, show them the appropriate math section for the age of

their kids and ask to get in again. Remember the phrase “I will show a book at

every house.” This will help you a lot because at least that way you have an

opportunity to briefly show

Mrs. Jones something

valuable at the door, and

then ask to get in again.

Lastly, make sure Mrs Jones

knows that she‟ll know if

she‟s interested in about 5

minutes, and that you‟re the

easiest person in the world

to get rid of. Keep saying:

“it just takes a quick

minute. Do you have a

kitchen table … why don‟t

we just sit there.”



THE INTRODUCTION

It is vital to sell the value of education. If most of your Inside Sit-Downs aren‟t

becoming customers, then perhaps you are only asking one question about the

school system, and then saying: “well, what we‟re doing is showing these study

guides.” One thing that is sure is every parent is interested in their child‟s

education, so spend a little more time on this and you will get more customers.

Here‟s a couple of points for your Intro:

Make sure that you get everybody, including Dad, in on the presentation!

This is so important that he doesn‟t feel isolated.

After you establish the value of education, say something like this: “Mrs

Jones, the next thing that we‟ve been talking about is the importance of the

parent roles in the children‟s education. How important do you really feel

your role is in your child‟s education?” Then make sure you listen to how

she answers this question, because every parent today is struggling with

how school has changed. It is amazing the things that kids have in school.

The way Mrs J answers this question will tell you how to respond. You

either say: “Well let me go ahead and show you something that everyone

has been getting,” or you might need to add one more part before you go

into your Demo. If she doesn‟t give you a firm response that her role is

tremendously valuable, then all you need to say is: “Mrs Jones, I guess the

reason that I‟ve done really well is that most of

the moms I‟ve talked to have said they went as

far as Algebra when they were in school. The

kids now get that no later than 8th or 9th

grade, so moms say they need something

around that is going to help their kids when

they get to Trig and Calculus. These are

subjects most moms said that they couldn‟t

help the kids with much! So let me go ahead

and show you what all the moms have been

getting. If you like it - that‟s great! - you can

order your set today. And if not, that‟s okay

too. I‟m just supposed so show it to everybody

in the school district…”



THE DEMO

Your demo should be short & sweet. After you‟ve done a great Introduction, you

really only need to show two sections and Close. One thing that is very important

is to make your Demo a DIALOGUE and not a MONOLOGUE!!! Add a couple of

trial closing questions to your Demo. This way you can gauge your customer‟s

interest level all the way through. These are great Trial Closing questions:

Mrs Jones, what do you think about what I‟ve shown you so far? <LISTEN>

Mrs Jones, have you seen anything yet that would have helped the kids last

year with their homework? (You can also ask the kids this question.)

<LISTEN>

Mrs Jones, what do you like most about what I‟ve shown you so far?

<LISTEN>

Mrs Jones, can you see how this will help you stay more involved in the kids‟

schoolwork? <LISTEN>

By asking temperature questions, it will keep the parents involved in the

presentation. It will also tell you exactly what points you need to emphasize in

order to make the sale. This will make Closing much easier because most families

that answer in the affirmative to these questions will buy your books.



THE CLOSE

The purpose of the close is to OPEN A RELATIONSHIP with Mrs Jones. Mrs J is

someone whom you are helping to purchase something for her kids; not someone

that you‟re tricking into buying something so you can make more money. To be

really effective in this area join sides with her. Here‟s an excellent phrase you can

use to join sides with Mrs J:

“Mrs Jones, the important thing is if you like the books, and if you think that

they will help your children with their homework, I‟ve been working out ways all

day to help families get their set! “

By saying this 2-3 times during your presentation, what you‟re actually doing is

becoming an assistant buyer with Mrs Jones. That way when you come down to the

Close, it is simply a series of those seven “yes” questions and Mrs Jones already

understands that you‟re not going to try to sell her something that doesn‟t really

help the kids.



One other very valuable part to the Close is immediately after you tell Mrs Jones

the price, you must justify to her why she should spend $500 today on a set of

books for her kids. This is called the emotional close, and here is a phrase that you

automatically should use right after Mrs Jones hears the price. That phrase is:

“Mrs Jones even in today’s economy, that’s not a bad price, is it? I think the

reason I‟ve been doing so well is that parents tell me that they buy the kids toys and

the toys are destroyed in about 2 months. They say they buy the kids clothes and

the kids are certainly going to grow out of them. One thing about a great education,

once the kids get it, how long do you think that‟s going to last?” <LISTEN>

Most of the families will answer that question in the same way, and they all say: “A

LIFETIME.” Then you should say: “I think that‟s exactly the reason why most of the

families I‟ve been talking to have been going ahead and investing in these. Here is

what Suzie Jackson, Beth Wilson, and all the moms like about the way I‟m doing

business. You see I‟m taking orders today…”

Have fun using & sharing these ideas. Another quick point is to make sure that you

also have fun throughout the whole day:

Laugh out loud all day long … My Fun With Work … (MFWW)!



I just found myself being nostalgic

about the toughest job in the world

that I used to do, and I thought

that I'd write you a few of my

thoughts. It's probably crunch time

for some of your First Years at the

moment. I imagine that some of

them are starting to really get the

hang of how to sell, and some are

wondering why it's taking so long

(!) but are hanging in there. If

that's right, then it sounds pretty familiar to me!

You probably remember I did three summers, my first in 2001 (room-mate was a 19

year old spotty Estonian called Andres Martin - Tsauka, Andres!). I think I sold 50

units in my first two weeks. It was, er, character building. The real world of work, in

its purest form, with no illusions or short cuts was a real shock. Selling 75 units (that

was a lot of money to me right then!) on my 4th Saturday cheered me up a lot and

surprised me even more! The summer was tough, and in my case I didn't earn as

much as I should have (that was one reason my second summer was so much fun

(kerching!!), but not a day now goes by that I don't use something I learnt in those

first two summers and smile with relief that I was brave enough to a) go in the first

place, b) stick it out and stay positive, and c) well I can't think of a c, but it was a

good thing I stayed. Hey - I remembered a third! Go despite my mum nagging me a

bit before my second summer because she didn't really want me going (although she

let me in the end).

The reasons I'm glad kind of go like this:

I opened up a department in my mum's law firm 18 months ago specialising in mo-

toring law defence (you know, speeding allegations and stuff).

I did £700 (wholesale, not profit, about 50% is profit) in new business in one day af-

ter about two weeks of marketing for clients.

This made me feel quite excited.

I put a system together in which my clients pay a deposit now, and pay for the bal-

ance of their defence just before the trial date in about 2-3 months. I even pop them

a little note in the mail with their outstanding account on it.

I tailor-made an approach, introduction, demonstration (obviously a lot shorter for

my product than yours), summary and price build up, close and cash collection (with

a little solidification thrown in at the end (!) for every type of sale I make. So for

speeding allegations I have one, for careless driving, you name it! The only thing I do

differently each time really is ask decent questions, listen to the answers, and at the

beginning make sure they know that I won't be offended if they don't go with us (you

know everyone at work must think I'm a genius for having invented this stuff all on

my own!).

All these little things I learnt to do pretty well over three summers, and I have

trained other people to do the same at my present work.

I even got my mum to install a credit card machine at the office!

My little motoring law department now employs 4 staff (we have a Selling 101 in

the office) and is headed for a gross profit of about £700,000 in its second year. But

the best thing is that my mum doesn't nag me quite so much anymore... She's even

let me set up a whole new arm of the firm called Polski Adwokat - it will be the UK's

only full service Polish language law firm (we have about 2 million Poles living in the

UK since the accession to the EU).

I don't want to oversimplify what we've done here. These new things have required a

lot of learning, but you know what? I was probably below average at selling books my

first year, although the last few weeks became a lot more lucrative. The training that

I got, and the training I gave myself through all that knocking pays me every day of

my professional life. And that is no exaggeration. I think it's probably fair to say that

selling books at least equals my law degree as the most significant formal relevant

training I have had for my career - and in terms of its impact on my career it prob-

ably surpasses the legal training.

I want anyone who reads this to know that Andres or Kertu or Kaido or anyone else

from my first summer didn't ask me to do this letter. I did it because it's mid sum-

mer, and maybe I can pretend and have a cold shower and read a chapter of Og

Mandino in the morning, but what I can't do is what you are all experiencing now -

the most fun/hard/exhilarating/frustrating/rewarding/sweaty(!)/exciting job that

exists.... with a bunch of crazy Europeans!
