Newsletter Week 2 Term 2 2020 Principal’s message Term 2 brings further changes to our schools’ organisation for a continuity of learning, and as you know Phase 1 of the NSW Governments’ staged return to school for students begins on Monday 11 May – with Kindergarten. We are looking forward to seeing our students at school on their allocated day. Please make sure your child comes to school with any resources they have at home to assist them completing their learning packs. Students are also required to wear full school uniform, and don’t forget to pack crunch and sip, lunch and recess. From Week 3, 11 May our canteen and uniform shop will also be available at times – a canteen update is included in this newsletter. A uniform update will be provided soon. So what’s been happening around the school while you have been learning remotely in self isolation…a lot! Assistant Principal, and Relieving and Acting Principal Rebecca Salter was the successful candidate in the merit selection process for Principal St Peters Public School. Mrs Salter started in her new role this term. We wish Mrs Salter well and know that she has already made a positive impact at St Peters Public School, just as she did during her time in her many roles at Summer Hill Public School. Our school is also undergoing extensive upgrades and our multicourt is almost finished, the pictures below are just some of the new things you will see and some work still underway. Can you guess what these things are and where they are in our school? Our staff were treated with a big surprise yesterday. A large number of Summer Hill parents and carers chipped in to shout all teachers and staff a free coffee or hot beverage this week to show appreciation for the wonderful work that we have been doing supporting our students in these uncertain and difficult times. We would all like to thank you, our community, for your appreciation. Of course a big thank you to The Drugstore for your contribution. Our executive team felt spoilt drinking our coffees during our meeting today. Thank you for taking the time to read about what’s happening at Summer Hill Public School, we are very excited to report what our students have been doing. P&C News

Dear Parents P&C meetings will be cancelled until further notice. Please follow the schools advice on upcoming school attendances. Wishing you and your family safety through these challenging times. Lachelle Uzcateguigaymon P&C President and P&C Committee

The Music Program will continue this term via Google Classroom. Please encourage your child to log in regularly so that he/she can receive music, links, information and practice goals from our conductors. The code for each ensemble was emailed to parents/carers last term. Google classrooms will be updated each week. All students will get brief practice suggestions, things to research and music games to play. Students can also communicate with conductors and other ensemble members – the same as regular classes. Please remember to organise some remote tutorials with your tutors (on Facetime, Zoom or Skype) and encourage your child to keep doing regular practice.

Take care and let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Across the stages

The Kindy teachers have been very impressed with the work being submitted over the past three weeks. Kindy students have made beautiful art mandalas, collected leaves and ordered them according to size and been very creative with ways of practising sight words. There have been some fantastic drawings from designing a new playground to responding to a story. The Kindy teachers have noticed that the students are trying hard when sounding out words when they are writing. We are looking forward to seeing our classes together on Monday. Well done to our Kindy students and their parents! Regards Dianne Thompson

Stage 1

Term 2 continues to bring about change and uncertainty. However, the way in which the

stage 1 students have conducted themselves during this change has been remarkable and

impressive. The Stage 1 teachers have been busy organising work tasks to keep children

engaged with their learning and we have never been more pleased and proud with the way

in which the Stage 1 students have been completing their learning tasks. Students have now

become independent in their learning and also more aware of how technology is shaping our

lives and our learning. Have a look at some of the work being produced by the Stage 1

students. Keep up the good work, Stage 1.

Your teachers are so proud of you!

Term 2 has started and Stage 3 have been working hard. Whether continuing with their learning at home or at school, they have been engaged in many

exciting projects: Immersed in a variety of literacy; persuasive in their writing; and creative with their many diverse math projects. Stage 3 students have

also been demonstrating their knowledge of electrical circuits by designing their own electrical games, complete with buzzers and lights. The Stage 3

teachers are very excited to try all of the games when the students return to the classroom.

Across the stages

Amongst all the uncertainty there comes some rays of sunshine. Stage

2 students are writing whilst they are learning remotely. Here are some

wonderful examples to brighten our day:

Boom bang crash!!!! The sleepy wombat woke up to a loud noise. He

was looking around his tree but then he saw three wild children were

wobbling the tree he was sleeping in. This was getting bad for the

wombat. The tree was going to get damaged. The wombat was furious

so he decided to fight with the kids.

by Namwook, Year 4

“Look out” yelled the young boy. His two friends ran back to where he

was standing just before a huge branch for the old tree crashed to the

ground. CRASH! BANG!

By Jade Year 3

Stage 2

Stage 3

“Whoosh” the wind blew. The land was dry almost at famine; it was as

hot as a fire place. How would we survive? All you could see was an old

grey broken tree, a small brown wombat and three wild kids. At this

moment of starvation anything would be food. Even a small dry leaf

would do. At this time, they couldn’t even recall what day or year it is.

Kiki the youngest, who is not helping the starvation by being hungry,

McDull the oldest is all ways getting bullied by Kiki for his name and

Sapphire, is the one in charge. Together they are family.

By Summer Year 4

‘Let’s climb Gumnut!’ Ben exclaimed. ‘Ok,’ said Joe, ‘but don’t go too high.’ ‘Oh, come on Joe,’ Jack said ‘don’t be a scaredy cat!’ (sigh) ‘Fine,’ Joe said. ‘Last one to the top is an uncooked fish!’ By Cameron Year 4
