Newsletter, Wednesday 3rd June, Term 2 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Thank you to our school community for supporting our teachers with

professional development. Last Friday 29 May, teachers were involved in a

whole school professional development day and focussed on focus areas

of improvement in the school’s Annual School Improvement Plan 2020 as

well as 21st century learning. This is important professional development for

continuous school improvement. It was a highly successful day for our

teaching staff.

Larrakeyah Primary has high expectations, high standards and high

achievement. Over the years, our school has been identified in NAPLAN

testing as a school performing better than the national average. This is in all

areas of literacy and numeracy. Our school improvement agenda this year

focusses on Writing, Mathematics and using data to inform teaching. We

have teaching expectations specific to our school which include explicit

teaching, high expectations, engaged learning, an intentionally inviting

environment and implementing Visible Learning.

Myself and the Assistant Principals, Mr Collister and Mrs Guse, spend regular

time in classrooms observing lessons. This not only allows us to observe

teaching and learning across the school, but enables us to give feedback

to teachers. Teacher feedback is important so that we can continually

improve the quality of teaching to improve student learning outcomes.

Teachers also observe and give feedback to their colleagues. We believe

that if we want improvement in learning outcomes then we need to

regularly analyse and improve upon our teaching practices as well.

This year we continue to focus on 21st century learning and the essential

skills that students need for the future – creativity, collaboration,

communication and critical thinking. We refer to these skills as the 4 C’s and

teachers also focus on these skills in their teaching. We are conscious of

preparing our students well for the future workforce.

Regards,

Fathma Mauger

House Shirts

The new Sports House shirts are proving to be extremely popular and

are a real hit with the students and school community. It is great to see

so much support for the school houses and everyone showing school

pride. The students look great in the new Sports House shirts and all the

feedback we have received is very positive. As they are so popular we

are running low on some sizes and some have become unavailable.

We are putting another order of shirts into our supplier and we will let

you all know as soon as they arrive. If you are interested in buying a

House shirt they are available for purchase at the front office for $35.

We have designed the shirts from the students ideas and design’s from

2019. They can be worn for the entire day your child has PE and for any

of the Sports Carnival Days. The new House Sports shirts are not an

official part of the school uniform so they cannot be worn on any other

days or on school excursions. If your child is wearing their House Shirt on

a non PE day, they will be required to ‘borrow’ a standard school shirt

from the front office for the day.

Please see below for your child’s class PE day.

Defence School Mentor

Dry season is here and how delightful it is. With the easing of COVID19 restrictions

the social calendars are starting to fill up, and with sports returning in the next few

weeks so will peoples busy schedules. Sports are a great way to teach children a

variety of skills, both physical and emotional, including making friends, teamwork,

confidence and resilience. Involvement incorporates the whole family into the

community. Easiest way to find a sport for your child is to Google it as there are so

many sports and hobbies in our local Darwin/Palmerston areas. From Scouts,

swimming and basketball to circus there is something for everyone.

Remember the NT Govt. also have the $100 sports vouchers to help with fees.

Talking social events, DCO are running various webinars and virtual events from

cake decorating to coffee catch ups, relationships and travelling bears.

See www.defence.gov.au/DCO or checkout https://www.eventbrite.com.au/o/

defence-community-organisation-darwin-15240233051 to register for upcoming

DCO events.

Volunteering is a positive tool for wellbeing and give us a sense of value within our

village. The TopEnder Tri-Service Magazine are always looking for new members

to help with ideas, magazine layout and being part of a fantastic Defence

Community. The magazine is created by Defence families for Defence families.

are eligible for the Education Assistance Tutoring Scheme.

Walking Bus - Beep! Beep! We have up to 8 excited kids for classroom pick up on

Monday, Tuesdays & Wednesdays for the walk to the Defence Gate at home

improve our social distancing efforts by helping reduce parents at classrooms and

improved student independence while having a bit of fun. So meet us at the

gate.

Let me know if you have a partner away on service, training or deployment so I

can support your child with Absent from Home support at school.

You can also register for family absent support by registering with Defence Family
