ThroughthecourseofmylifeIhavetypicallyexperiencedsummera;metobeoutandaboutalongwith,aswellasaround,manyotherpeople.Summerweathermakesiteasytogetoutdoorstoenjoyawalkorhike,;meonthewateror;mewithfriendsandfamilyhavingabarbecueorsiOngbyacampfire.ButthissummerisunlikeanysummerIhaveexperiencedbefore.Myforaysawayfromhomearemorecalculatedandmorethoughtout.WhileIamgeOngoutintonatureasmuchasIcantheexperienceissignificantlydifferentthanyearspast.DuringpastsummersIwouldno;cethepeoplearoundmebuttheirpresencewouldn’tbesomethingIwoulddwellon.ThisyearIfindmyselfpayingclosea6en;ontothepeopleIamsharinganareawith.AndIamobservingwhetherthepeoplewhoarenearbyarea6endingtothesocialdistancingandmaskwearingrecommenda;onsthathavebeenins;tutedinana6empttoreducethelikelihoodofspreadingCOVID-19.Evenatriptothegrocerystoreinvolves;metoconsiderwhetherthetripisimportantenoughtowarranttherisk.
IknowIamnotaloneinthe;meItaketoconsiderwhereIamgoing,whoandhowmanypeopleImightencounter,andwhetherthetripiswarrantedandappropriate.IhaveheardfromUUFBmembersandfriendsIconnectwithduringZoommee;ngsthattheyaremorecau;ousaboutwheretheygoandwhotheyhavecontactwith.Concernsaboutcontrac;ngand/orspreadingtheCOVID-19virusissomethingthatisattheforefrontofawarenessformanypeoplethesedays,andrightlyso.
Avermorethanfourmonthsoftakingthekindsofprecau;onsmen;onedaboveaswellasothers,however,Iamfeelingadefiniteandsignificantsenseofloss.Thelossisn’taboutsummerinspecificbutitseemsthatsummer,andmymemoriesofwhatsummerwaslikeinthepast,hasincreasedmyawarenessofthelossIhavebeenfeelingformonthsnow.ThesenseoflossthatismostpronouncedinvolvesthedistancefromothersIamexperiencing—distancethatisn’tlimitedtojustthephysicallevel.Many,ifnotallofusarefeelingsuchalossaswekeepourdistancefromotherstoprotectthemandtoprotectourselves.IamcertainthatallofuswouldliketheCOVID-19pandemictobeathingofthepast.Wewouldliketobeabletogoaboutourdailylivesagainwithouthavingtofocussomuch;meanda6en;onontakingprecau;ons.Thatiswhatwewouldalllike.Noneofushowever,hasthepowertomakethathappen.Itappearsthatwewillneedtostayvigilantandtakeprecau;onsforatleastseveralmoremonths.
AsIfeelmyownsenseoflossandthinkaboutallofyouandthelossyouareexperiencingandfeeling,IwanttosaythatIammissingseeingallofyouandhavingtheabilitytotalkwithyouinperson.Imisshearingyourvoicesinthecha6erbeforeandaverSundayservicesandaswesinghymnstogether.ImisshearingaboutwhatishappeninginyourlifeduringJoysandConcernsorduringachatatsocialhour.AndImissseeingyourfacecloseupinsteadofonacomputerscreenornotatall.
IknowthatIamnotaloneinanyofwhatIhavemen;onedabove.Manyofyouarehavingsimilarexperiencesandfeelings.Knowingthatwesharesuchthingsalike,eventhoughwearenotabletobetogether,helpsmecon;nuetofeelconnectedtoyou.Ihopethatyouarefindingwaystostayconnectedwithoneanotheraswell.Thiswillbeasummerthatwillberememberedformanyyears.Mayyoustaywellandstayconnectedduringthischallenging;me.

Eventhoughwearenotusingourbuilding,muchishappeningthere.Avermanymonthsofplanning(andyearsofintending)wenowhaveassisSvehearingdevicesinthesanctuary!Therearetwoop;ons:onethatworksthroughasmartphoneandanotherthatusesaseparatereceiver.Ourgreeterswillhaveinstruc;onsforuseoncewearebackinthesanctuary.
Nowisanexcellent;meforcleaningthecarpetthroughoutthebuilding.Highuseareaswerecleanedin2018,buttherestofithasnotbeencleanedsinceitwasinstalledin2017.CarolynBoydandJohnBergwilldothefurnituremoving,andthecostwillbecoveredwiththemoneysavedbynotusingourregularweeklycleaningservice.
Speakingof“notsince2017,”somethingthathasnotchangedsincewefirstoccupiedthebuildingistheaccesscodeforthebackdoor.Sowearechangingiteffec;veTuesday,August4.TheSafetyCommi6eeandtheBoardaredevelopingapolicyforallaspectsofbuildingaccess—whoshouldhavethecode,howovenitshouldbechanged,howtorecordwhoknowsthecode,etc.Forthepresent,thesepeoplewillhavethenewcode:staff(includingRev.Duffy),Boardofficers(president,VP,treasurer,secretary),andessen;albuildingvolunteers(MikeClark,TonyaStevens,RandyBabbi6,CarolynBoyd,andSuzySterling).Asthepolicyisdevelopedandadopted,addi;onalbuildingusers,suchaschairsofkeycommi6ees,willhavetheaccesscode.Thisisjustoneoftheresponsibili;esofbuildingownershipwearegrowinginto.

Aswasreportedviathelistserv/googlegroup,ErinHenke(some;mesjoinedbyherhusbandLogan)ismakingrecordingswhilesinginghymnsforourvirtualSundayservices.SeveralofyouhavecommentedonhowmuchthisaddstoourSundaymorningexperience.
TheBoardhelditsannualplanningretreatonJuly18.Wewerefortunatetobeabletomeetoutdoorsonacoveredpa;o—thefirst;methisyear’sBoardhasbeenabletomeetinperson—atacarefulsocialdistance.WhilewedidnotcompletedevelopmentoftheBoard’sgoalsforthecomingyear,wemadeaverygoodstart.Oncetheyarecompleteandhavebeenadopted,wewillpublishthemtotheFellowship.WearestayingwithourplanofnotusingthebuildingthroughSeptember30butwillbeginthinkingaboutandplanningforthenextphaseinjustacoupleofweeks.Ofcourse,theCOVIDvirushasitsownwaysandwanderings,soanyplanwemakewillbesubjecttochange.
