Building G34 - Rooms 1.05/1.06

Presentation by Professor Wendy Moyle, Program Director, Menzies Health Institute Queensland, Griffith University:

Using companion robots to improve quality of life of people living with dimentia

Up to 90% of people living with dementia will at some time be affected by adverse neuropsychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, agitation and emotional distress. These symptoms are distressing for the person and their carer. One means to help manage these symptoms is through the introduction of companion robots. In this presentation I will describe the introduction of a companion robot and the impact of these robots on the lives of people living with dementia.

Professor Wendy Moyle's Bio:

Professor Wendy Moyle is Wendy is Program Director Menzies Health Institute Queensland at Griffith University. Wendy’s research focus is in the areas of ageing and mental health, specifically neurocognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Her research aims to achieve the best evidence possible for care of people with dementia and to reduce the distresses of the disease for the individual and their carers. She is internationally recognised for her research investigating the use of social robots and assistive technologies.

What’s happening:

► Keyboard Intermediate: Imelda Gordon will not be tutoring in 2019. She will talk to her students at class on 10 October about the class continuing?

► Yoga A: Because this class has grown, we have secured the Multi-Purpose Room on the ground floor to provide more room.

Class Coordination Notes

By Alice Fairley

We know you are out there, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with any of the Committee Members of our Management team listed on the front of this Newsletter. You will be playing a very important part in the operation of our Association in ensuring that we go forward and not backwards.

► English Literature: A request was made to use the Conference Room for the class to screen a movie. The Community Centre generously agreed to hire it out to us including the use of the equipment at a considerably reduced cost.

► Room Bookings for 2019: Room bookings have been confirmed for 2019 except for the last class dates 6-13 December.

► Expressions of Interest: Don’t forget to register your interest in the proposed five new classes Harrie Bahlin is offering to tutor in 2019, on the Noticeboard in the Australia Fair office.

We desperately need volunteers to help run the Association who are skilled working with programs in Excel, Word and Access.

Community Expo and Seniors Forum

U3A were invited to have a table to display and promote our U3A group at the Seniors Forum and Community Expo at The Star on Wednesday 3 October put on by Steven Ciobbo, MP.

It is designed to keep Gold Coast seniors informed about the services and support available to them, as well as to be briefed on relevant issues and challenges.

‘EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST’ for proposed new classes in 2019

Alice Fairley and Pamela Hamilton manned our table in a very professional way. There was a lot of interest and enquiries made and all our literature was well received by the public.

We have since then registered new members as a result of the forum. It was a very successful day.

Register your interest in the following classes - add your name to the list(s) which are on our Notice Board in the hallway of our Australia Fair office. These classes are proposed by Tutor Harrie Bahlin and the Venues anticipated will be at Margaret Street - days and times to be decided.

► On Writers and Writing : the philosophy and process ► Pendulums : How to use them ► Feng Shui Numerology : The study of numbers and their interpretation ► Numerology : The study of numbers and their interpretation ► Dreams and their interpretation

For a class to go ahead, there has to be at least ten (10) members’ names added to each list, so don’t forget to add your name if you are interested in any of these topics.

U3A Walk - Saturday 15 September

By Diane Newbould

Palm Beach to Currumbin Beach Blue skies and a gentle north easterly breeze, just perfect for our sprint time walk. We were the only souls walking along Palm Beach except for several life guards in front of the Palm Beach Surf Club testing some equipment.

When we reached Groyne sand Spit there was plenty of people enjoying themselves at the waters edge.

We then took the path through the sandy scrub to the lagoon at the Currumbin Estuary, which is a very popular place. Lots of families and people walking their dogs, until we reached a grassy areas, which was once a bowling club. The area is fenced off and no dogs allowed in – it has facilities and a Beach Café.

After a coffee we continued on heading south along the Gold Coast Highway and over the Currumbin Bridge and then down Duringan Streeet to Currumbin Beach and the Sculptures on the Sand.

By now, it was time for an ice cream – there were 5 Ice Cream vans there.

The Sculptures were very interesting – the Teddy Bear was lovely, the Shopping Carts creation was very large, and so was the orange Traffic Cones creation. There was also a very colourful Parrot and lots more that I can’t describe.

We reassembled at the Surf Club, and then it was only a short walk to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary where we had lunch before we too the bus service and light rail back to Southport.

What a difference to have the

blue skies spilling down on us

after the cold winter weather.

We look forward to our next walk in October.
