President’s Message
Welcome back everyone. One month already gone into
Semester 2, and we have a lot to catch up on with what has been
happening during the month of August.
Firstly, I have to congratulate Tutors/Convenors and Students for
easing into the new system of pre-filled Semester 2 Attendance
Sheets. It has proven to be a very successful transition and we are
well on the way of synchronising class attendances with the
class/students’ information recorded in our Data Base.
Please read the Class Coordination Notes that highlights the
importance of this transition and why it is being done.
For the Management Committee, we still convened the monthly
Committee Meeting on the 26 July as required under the Rules of
our Association, as well as cleaning and tidying up the Study Room
ready for Semester 2. Thank you guys, giving your time on all this
during July Break.

Presentation by Professor Brad Jackson:
Social Innovation as a means to promote sustainable inclusive growth in Australia
This lecture will describe the growth of social innovation
in the private and not-for-profit sectors which uses market
mechanisms to effect social change. Three interrelated forms
of social innovation ‒ social enterprise, social finance, and
social procurement ‒ will be examined to highlight the role
they have played in promoting inclusive growth in regions
and communities. The limitations of and challenges faced
by social innovation will be discussed with a view
to suggesting ways that socially innovative techniques might
be more widely utilized throughout Australia.

We have just taken what we hope will be the first step towards the computerisation of our members inscriptions, class selections and attendance records.
At the beginning of the Semester, all Tutors
received computer generated class lists based on
information recorded in our Data Base.
As expected, this highlighted many discrepancies
between our official records and actual
class membership.
Consequent updating of records has provided us
with more accurate information, necessary to
Class Coordination Notes
By Alice Fairley / Andrew Carter, Class Coordinators
the management of our classes and provide more
accurate advice to current and newly
enrolling members.
We thank Tutors and Convenors for their support and
feedback, so necessary if these changes are to be
fully effective and our ever-increasing enrolments
managed correctly.
We have five possible new classes proposed for
2019 which are on the Notice Board for
Expression of Interest. Details of these are also
listed out in this Newsletter on pages 7 and 8 for
your information.
We need RELIEF RECEPTIONISTS to fill in on
Reception at our Australia Fair Office when our
regular receptionists are away on holiday or
cannot come in for personal reasons. The hours
are either 9.00am to 12.30pm for the morning shift,
or 12.30pm to 3.30pm for the afternoon shift.
Our receptionists are U3A's front line contact with
the community which is a most important role. Full
training is given because you have to be aware of
the overall aspects of how U3A functions.

U3A Network President’s Council
On the 20th July we were invited to attend the first President’s Council meeting, hosted by U3A
Twin Towns, since the election of the new Network Committee.
It was an informative meeting, each U3A group (North Coast/Twin Towns/Redland/Broadbeach)
sharing ‘Vital Statistics’, ‘Most Notable Success in 2017-18’ and ‘Greatest Challenges’, and
summarising common themes between each group.
A copy of the Minutes can be made available upon request.

Have fun with Fluid Acrylic Paints
WARNING – FLUID ACRYLIC PAINTING
CAN BE ADDICTIVE.
A new class is being run by Lou Stevens
on Tuesdays at Margaret Street from
1.00 pm to 3.00 pm.
This class is for those with little talent for drawing
or painting in the traditional artistic sense, but
wish to unleash their creative side.
It is certainly not a serious art class, it is simply
having fun with fluid acrylic paint and letting the
paint itself make the art.
Why not go along and see what is involved – Lou
will even supply the paint for a trial run, but it can
be messy, so wear old clothes.
Here are some examples of Lou’s
work to illustrate what can be created.

Possible New Classes for 2019 - EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
We are calling for Members to register an interest in the following newly proposed
classes by adding your name to the list(s) which are posted on our Notice Board in
the hallway of our Australia Fair office.
All these classes are proposed by Tutor Harrie Bahlin and the Venues anticipated will be at Margaret Street -
days and times to be decided.
On Writers and Writing : the philosophy and process The topic covers "writers and the art of writing" - famous writers and their styles;
examine the philosophy of authors when writing; the opportunity to comment on
novels, short stories, poetry and other forms of writing; and the chance to go
beyond the book and into the mind of the writer. Look at various techniques and
styles of writing and why you like certain genres and not others.
Pendulums : How to use them Pendulums have been used for thousands of years, for all sorts of reasons. They
give the user a "yes" or "no", a positive or negative, by way of a simple swinging
motion. There are many theories about how a pendulum works (called "dowsing").
The truth is that this form of divination will always remain somewhat of a mystery.
Explore the history and use of the pendulum with Harrie Bahlin who has used the
pendulum for many years. He has kept a record of questions and situations that
have risen in his life. You can use the pendulum at any time, day or night, in any
place or situation. Join Harrie to explore what the pendulum can do for you.
Feng Shui Numerology : The study of numbers and their interpretation Feng Shui (pronounced Fung Schway) is the ancient study of the use of space. Also
known as 'geomancy', it is a pseudoscience originating in China, which claims to
use energy forces to harmonise individuals with their surrounding environment. It is
closely linked to Taoism. The term 'Feng Shui' literally translates as "wind-water"
in English.
Today, we use Feng Shui to design, build and place furniture in the house or unit
where we live. It connects with astrology and numerology. Feng Shui helps you learn
about the use of energy and can indicate why you feel comfortable or uncomfortable
where you are at the moment. The goal of Feng Shui is to place the human-built
environment on spots with good qi (pronounced chi), an imagined form of "energy".
Harrie has been studying Feng Shui since 2006, so join him for a fascinating and
fun time.

Possible New Classes for 2019 - EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
Numerology : The study of numbers and their interpretation People have been studying and interpreting numbers since ancient times.
Pythagoras, the Greek philosopher, mathematician and teacher is recorded to have
said "Numbers are the language of the universe." The recording and studying of
numbers came from ancient Babylon. As urban areas turned into cities, the need to
keep records became necessary. This system evolved into our modern Arabic
numbers. Today, we use numbers automatically, but what do they mean in our lives?
Learn what numbers 1, 2, 3 etc. mean and how they can help and guide you. If you
are a 1, 2 or 3, what street number should you live at? Does your car's licence plate
reflect you as a person ? How does your phone number reflect you? Numbers can
indicate aptitudes you have and reflect your character. Do you have a nickname, a
name you are called by your family, your workmates etc.
Your birth date is a reflection of who you are. How do you get on with others who
have different dates of birth? These numbers all mean something in your life. Many
questions will be explored and studies with Harrie who has been using numerology
for many years.
Dreams and their interpretation There are many theories as to why we dream. Scientists have been able to show that
sleep is something we all need. We dream while we sleep. Interpreting and
understanding dreams has become a large field tank to the Internet. Dreams can contain everyday scenes or people we know, but they can also contain some very
unusual people, scenes or animals.
Sigmund Frued, the analyst, wrote a book "Interpretation of dreams". Carl Jung,
another analyst, had his own interpretation of dreams, which he called "the
collective unconscious". Many psychologists today use their work to help clients.
They often look at the client's unconscious actions and explore how the unconscious mind, through the dream state, is meant to help and assist the client.
There are many books and internet sites to help - or confuse - you.
You can learn about dreams with some common knowledge and activities such as
keeping a dream diary. Join Harrie who has kept a dream diary for years - he is
willing to share his experiences.

U3A Walk - Saturday 11 August
By Diane Newbould
Burleigh Heads and the Tallebudgera Estuary
Overcast sky when we first assembled at
9.00 am, and welcomed two new walkers.
The Light Rail and Bus Service connected
well, and we were soon at Burleigh Beach.
Unfortunately, the lower walking path around
Burleigh Heads was closed due to rock falls, so
we had to take the higher path.
At the commencement of the higher path, there
are steep bush steps which took about five
minutes to ascend, and thank goodness there
was a handrail. The rest of the ascent is on a
zigzag path, with a glorious tree canopy above.
At one of the turning points of the zigzag path
there is a short diversion with a look out, which
has a wonderful northwards view, and then, it
was up and onwards until we reached the
highest section of the path.
By this time the clouds had cleared and when we
came out of the canopy, we were greeted by blue
skies, sunlight, and the views both southward
and westward and below, were the beautiful blue
and green colours of the Tallebudgera Estuary.
It was a shorter distance down the descent.
Along the way we could hear some whirring
sounds from the ground beside the path, but
could not see any creatures - perhaps they were
tiny brown frogs!
Our path soon merged with the lower path and
we walked beside the Tallebudgera Creek and
admired the golden sand beaches until we
reached the gate and walked out of the Burleigh
Head National Park.
We then walked across the bridge over the
Tallebudgera Creek and into the Recreation
Camp for a rest, although five walkers walked out
to the breakwater rocks.
Getting hungry by now, so we took the short walk
back to Burleigh along the bush track that runs
on the eastern side f the Gold Coast Highway,
and then into James Street to our favourite cafe
for lunch.
Very pleasant interlude with good company, although it was the most strenuous walk we have done.
We look forward to our next walk in
September.

Walk on Saturday 14 July
By Diane Newbould
During the Semester break, we still did our walk on the 14 July to make up for the one we missed during the Commonwealth Games.
This time we assembled a little later at
10.15 am at the Runaway Bay Junior
Yacht Club and commenced our walk
under the Ephram Bridge to walk around
Paradise Point.
There had been a very high tide earlier, so the
path was slightly strewn with debris, plenty of
people about, large groups with party
decorations enjoying this sunny day.

Social Activities
Our lovely ladies experiencing 'High Tea' at Cherry Beans, Pacific Fair, for their Monthly Lunch Get-together, this time held
on Sunday 1 July.
When we reached the Salacia Village Complex,
it was good to see a restaurant had opened since
the last time we were there. It seemed to be quite
busy and there were more boats in the marina
as well.
After a short rest, we walked onto the Boat
Harbour, and then along Paradise Parade, then
turned left down Bruce Avenue until we reached
the Healthy Cafe. We all enjoyed an array of
delicious food mostly Sourdough bread with
various toppings.
Late start and an early return to Southport.
We all had an enjoyable time, with our entire troupe of eleven walking together.
