JANUARY 2016

N E W S L E T T E R

Happy New Year everyone,

It is officially 2016 and we have been launched into a brand new year. Flipping the calendar is always an exciting time for me because it reminds me to stop, reflect and review how it all went down in the previous year. There is a popular idea that is often quoted: what gets monitored and measured will often improve. This idea is as straight forward as it sounds and applies to any part of your life. That is why I am such a big believer in journalling. Journalling is a great way to reflect upon and monitor your personal journey, allowing you to improve upon things that are important to you.

Now, let’s talk about what’s included in this edition of the newsletter to help you achieve peak performance and pursue your personal greatness. To start off the year we hear from our naturopath, Dr. Jo-Anne Mina, as she gives us insight on how to treat pain from within. We follow this up with some information on our Supplement of the Month, Orthoadapt by AOR, and how it can benefit you during periods of time which are particularly stressful. This is followed by a short and sweet article on scar tissue, written by physiotherapist, integrated peak performance consultant, and clinical director, Shannon Wightman. Our final article is written by peak performance coach, Sarah J Palumbo. Sarah J gives some great tips on how to stick to the new goals you have set for yourself in 2016. As always, we invite you to check out our Highlights section to see what we are up to and what we offer to help you achieve your own kind of beautiful and your own brand of personal greatness.

Whew, was I wrong when I said that we are starting the year with a BANG? I think not! We look forward to helping you in any way we can, so please keep the feedback going because this is what allows us to constantly work towards giving you a greater level of service.

Until next time, be relentless in your pursuit of optimal health and personal greatness.

4 tips to start easing your pain:

1) Sleep – if you are not getting quality sleep, then your body can not produce the hormones necessary to heal the body.

2) Increase nutrient dense foods – the less processed foods we eat, then the less toxicity we are feeding our cells.

3) Incorporate anti-inflammatory herbs to your foods - turmeric, ginger, rosemary, cinnamon.

4) Increase fish consumption – deep sea, cold water fish will have a higher content of anti-inflammatory properties (EPA). Consume S.M.A.S.H (salmon, mackerel, anchovy, sardine, herring).

Supplement of the Month - Orthoadapt by AOR The adrenal glands are small glands located on top of the kidneys that are responsible for regulating specific hormones. These are the glands that kick into overdrive during periods of prolonged stress, eventually putting your body into a prolonged state of fight or flight. This type of stress can take an extreme toll on your health. Orthoadapt works to help your body cope with these periods of prolonged stress and bring you back to a state of greater hormonal balance.

Always remember to consult with your healthcare practitioner before beginning any new supplement regimen.

Time and time again you find yourself dealing with the same, annoying pain that just won’t seem to go away. Aching joints, sore muscles, chronic headaches, burning pain, the list goes on. You’ve developed a wonderful relationship with your massage therapist, chiropractor and physiotherapist – after all, they’ve been there to ease the pain and improve your quality of life. But, do you find yourself running into the same cycle of pain out of nowhere and can’t seem to nip things in the bud? When dealing with pain it’s always best to not only treat on the surface, but also to address internal processes by treating from within. Let’s take a peek at pain on an internal level.

What is pain?

Pain is that uncomfortable feeling in your body that tells you something may be wrong. It’s your body's way of sending signals to your brain. Your spinal cord and nerves provide the pathway for messages to travel to and from your brain and the other parts of your body.

What health conditions cause pain?

Gout, diabetes, hypothyroidism, depression, insomnia, sleep apnea, stress, hemochromatosis, cancer, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, shingles, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, lupus, autoimmune disorders, nutrient deficiencies, leaky gut. The main common denominator with these health conditions is that they all need to be treated from a deeper, biochemical and nutritional level.

What is the first step to addressing pain?

The first step I take when treating a patient’s pain concerns is looking at what they are putting into their mouth. The food you fuel each of your organs, tissues and cells with is going to the building blocks to how your body will function and heal. Ask yourself these questions: 1. How do I feel when I consume a lot of fast food meals?

2. How do I feel when I’ve had lots of processed sugars and caffeine?

If you are dealing with chronic pain issues or are wondering if supplementation is right for you, then take advantage of the free 20 minute consults I offer to start healing from within and living a pain-free life!

3. How do I feel when I eat a whole loaf of bread? (Ok, the majority of people will most likely not be eating a whole loaf of bread to themselves in one sitting, but it’s very common for me to hear patients tell me that they can’t live without their bread and pasta)

At the end of the day if you’re dealing with pain, you need to ask yourself how much longer can you handle suffering from the pain and if you ready to dig deeper into getting rid of it once and for all.

Food is Medicine…Food is Healing…Food is Powerful!

When an individual sustains any type of soft tissue injury, whether it be an ankle sprain, a hamstring tear or a repetitive overuse injury, there is a cascade of events that occur in the body to begin tissue healing. During the repair phase of healing, the body lays down collagen, the main structural protein found in various connective tissue throughout the body. Collagen helps bind damaged tissue together and increases its tensile strength. This is a good thing, and a normal part of the healing process, but this is what leads to what we commonly know as scar tissue. You might be surprised to know that scar tissue and adhesions are formed even when an injury is seemingly minor. Depending on the individual and the injury sustained, scar tissue can become problematic and eventually lead to pain and dysfunction.

Scar tissue is different than the tissue it replaces in that it is never as functional. It is typically dense, has limited flexibility, and has the tendency to contract and deform the surrounding tissues. Keep in mind that the body is three dimensional and is interconnected. If there is any restriction in the connective tissue, there can be major repercussions not only in the original site of injury, but in other areas of the body as well. This can affect the mobility and function of joints, muscles, and even organs. Scar tissue is also different in that it lacks the blood flow and lymphatic drainage of normal tissue. Blood flow is essential for bringing nutrients into the area, while lymphatic drainage is responsible for removing excess fluid and waste build-up. Limitations in the mobility of connective tissue and poor circulation put an individual at an increased risk of injury/re-injury.

So what should you do if you suspect you might be dealing with scar tissue? The best thing you can do is consult with your healthcare practitioner to determine what the best plan of treatment is for you. Manual therapists can use specific techniques such as myofascial release and cross-fibre friction to help break down and realign the scar tissue to improve pain, range of motion and overall function.

Scar tissue can lead to:

• pain • decreased range of motion/decreased

flexibility/stiffness • decreased muscle strength • decreased physiological function • nerve impingement/entrapment • numbness/tingling • postural deviations • increased potential for future injury

4 TIPS FOR STICKING TO YOUR GOALS THIS NEW YEAR

reiki practitioner Sarah J Palumbo| integrated peak performance consultant energy & brain repatterning practitioner

1) Find out what you want. Make a list of all the things you want. People tend to think about all of the things they don’t want, but rarely think about what it is that they do want. If you are having difficulty thinking about what you do want, think about what you don’t want and reframe it to put a positive spin on it. For example, start with “I don’t want to work crazy hours and on the weekends.” Turn this in to “I want to work Monday through Friday from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm”.

2) Know your why. Think about why your goal has value and why it is important to you. Once you truly understand why you want to accomplish your goal, you are more likely to stay motivated and stick with it.

3) Develop a new mode of operation. Develop new strategies and habits that are in line with your goal to get you there. Once you start doing things a new way, you will start getting different results.

4) Apply the 4Cs from the Journey To Personal Greatness program. Clarity - Get clear on what it is that you want. Courage - Take the jump, and have the guts to go after what you want! Commitment - Make the decision and ensure you are 100% in. Consistency - Develop rituals and daily practices to keep you on track.
