Pastor’s Column
Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Amen!
So, just a little reminder – it’s still the Easter sea-son. Pentecost Sunday will be June 9, and then we’ll hit the long “green season” after Trinity Sunday on June 16. So, continue to rejoice in Christ’s victory and bask in His gifts!
As it came time for me to write this article, two things were on my mind, and I want to share them with you.
A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1
As you’ve likely noticed, there is a lot of arguing going on in public square these days – and much of it recently concerns abortion. The “triggers” for all the anger and bitterness are two-fold. First, there were laws passed, and celebrated, in New York and Virginia allowing a mother the legal right to terminate the life of her child up to the moment of delivery. While many complicat-ing cases can be cited concerning a mother’s health and the health of the child in which there may be room for people of good-will to disagree about the best course of action, the fundamental issue is clear for the Church. To terminate the life of a child at birth, much less at any other time during its development, is murder. Period. To claim that someone has a right to do that, no matter how tragic or emotionally compelling the circumstances, is to cast aside fundamental mo-
rality. People were and are understandably out-raged by these laws.
Now, somewhat in reaction to the extreme laws allowing abortion up to birth, you see some states enacting severe restrictions on abortion (notably Georgia and Alabama, with other states considering similar measures), and imposing on-erous penalties for violations of those laws. While this is certainly moral, and something we can embrace as people who affirm the value and sanctity of all human life, we need to recognize that strategically, these laws may stir up even fiercer opposition in the “pro-choice” communi-ty. And we need to understand that in our effort to convince our fellow-citizens, both Christian and non-Christian, of the need to stand for life, not all, or even a majority, are ready to outlaw abortion in all circumstances. Hence, we need patience.
Which brings me to the quote from Proverbs. You know how bitter the arguments have be-come. And often, those who claim to be “progressive” or “pro-choice” will say things about the pro-life position that are slanderous, false, hateful, and designed to stir up ill-will against their opponents. When we hear such things, or even have such things said to us in conversation, it is easy to feel the heart race, the blood boil, and become angry. The temptation is to “give as good as we got,” and to shout down and “destroy” the pro-choice argument. But no-tice what happens here – when we give in to the temptation to use the same type of rhetoric and tactics as those we disagree with – our focus gets locked on “winning” the argument, and
(Pastor’s Column continued on page 2)
2
“silencing” the opponent. And even if we were to succeed in our effort – notice what hasn’t hap-pened: we have not persuaded anyone to see the value of life. For in the world we live in, winning an argument seldom persuades – usually it mere-ly hardens and embitters. So, what does Solomon advise? The “soft answer.” The soft answer is not one that beats around the bush, it doesn’t concede the moral issue, it isn’t capitulation. Rather, it is tender – in the sense that it expresses concern for the feelings and passions of the opponent. It doesn’t seek to be unnecessarily offensive. It seeks understanding. It tries to find common ground. It doesn’t try to beat an opponent into submission. In other words, the soft answer is about building bridges to sustain relationships (when possible), rather than trying to destroy.
So, in this time of social tension, let us use soft an-swers – making wise use of our words – that we might gain a hearing and consideration for all life. May God, in Christ, grant us wisdom through His Spirit. Amen.
The second thing on my mind right now came from my devotional reading the other morning, Luke 12:13-34 (from the Treasury of Daily Prayer). This is the passage in which Jesus teaches the dis-ciples not to worry about clothes or food, since the Father knows they need these things. But, what it set me to thinking about was “being anxious for Church.”
Here’s what I mean…. We know what it means to be anxious about food, right? It means you are concerned about whether you have enough, have what you like, and have what’s good for you. Likewise, we know what it means to be anxious about clothes. Do you have the right kind for the weather? Do you have enough changes? Is the style of your clothes something you don’t mind being seen in? Jesus says not to be anxious about this stuff. Rather – be anxious for Church! Seek first the kingdom….
Ask yourself – am I getting enough Church? Is it what’s good for me? Will it get me through the challenges and temptations I’m struggling with? Better yet – do I look forward to going to wor-ship?
(Pastor’s Column continued from page 1) Here are some things to remember about Church and worship.
“For where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I among them.” Matthew 18:20
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all… Hebrews 12:21-23
When you gather for worship, in Church, with the body of fellow believers, you are also in Christ’s presence. And not merely in some “general” way. Jesus is there because His name is called upon, and we are doing what He told us to do, saying what He has told us to say, and doing this with confidence in His promise. And because He is there, according to His word and promise, He is actively giving you what He says He will give you – forgiveness, life, salvation, hope, strength. He is your Rock, your refuge. Come to Him! Be anxious to be where He is promised to be found.
And, when you come to worship, you are not just gathered with your fellow believers in this life – you are joined by the angels and saints – or, more to the point, you join with the angels and saints in light, to worship the living God, sing His praises, rejoice in His gifts, and share His life. This too is something to be anxious about – not in a fearful way, but in a “I can’t wait to get there” way.
I know there are many distractions out there. I know that there are many other things that call for your time and attention – especially on weekends. But hang tough, friends. What is offered in the worship of the Church is worth more than any-thing the world has to offer. So, be anxious to re-ceive it!
Blessings to you all.
In His grace,

YOUTHFUL MINDS Deaconess Gillian is planning to be here on Sunday, June 2nd. She would like to have lunch with you and suggests that you all meet at the Flat Top Grill at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie, at 12:30 pm for an hour or two of good food and good conversation. Remember,
you have to eat and we foot the bill, so grab a friend or two and join the group.
THE GOSPEL FOR YOUNGER FOLK As the Sunday School depart-ment takes a well-deserved Summer off, we don’t want to leave younger members of Mt. Calvary feeling abandoned. So this Summer we will again take time during worship to break down the Gospel reading into a form that can be grasped more easily. So, plan to bring the young ones to worship so they can enjoy the gifts. We’ll start on May 26th and go through August 11th (Sunday School should start up again August 18th)
MISSION SCRUBBED! When the Board of Education met to look at how many volunteers we had for our tentative VBS program, they discovered a couple of key are-as were understaffed. Hence, we’ve
decided to call things off for this year and start looking toward 2020. Watch for information ear-ly next year. Thanks to all who volunteered.
CONFIRMATION SUNDAY This year we will celebrate with two of our young people, who have completed two years of in-struction with Pastor Long in the doctrines of our faith, on June 2nd. Those two young people are Ella
Beth Barr and Payton Palmer Ruskusky. Please plan to attend the 10:45 am service on Sunday,
June 2nd to hear them make their confessions of the faith and receive their first communion.
CONTINUING EDUCATION FROM THE FORT WAYNE SEMINARY On June 4th -- 6th, Mt. Calvary will again host a continuing ed-ucation class from Fort. Wayne. This year the subject is “Early Church Preaching and Catechesis in a Pluralist Society.” As our culture in North America be-comes more secular and less Christian, we can begin to see some similarities to the world of the first Christians. So the question is – do any of their ways of approaching their world help us in our efforts to pass on the faith today? The class will be taught by the Rev. Dr. Chad Kendall (who has family in Pekin), a pastor in Lowell, IN and an adjunct professor at Ft. Wayne and Concordia University, Chicago. Registration forms are in the Narthex, or can be gotten from the church of-fice. SALVAGE ON THE HIGH SEAS Women of Mt. Calvary worked at cleaning the kitchen on Clean-Up day. They have decided that we no longer use or need over 100 glass des-sert trays and cups. So – if you think you would like to have some and can use them, talk to Ar-deane Ruckle (691-8007) and she will help you get them.

Sunday:
YOUTH:
Sunday School: Age 3 through Grade 8 meet downstairs. Sunday School Is on hiatus for the summer. We will begin on August 18th. Have a great Summer! ADULTS: Adult Class: Other Religions – The United States has prided itself on having “Freedom of religion” as a cor-nerstone of our democracy. But just what is reli-gion? What religions do we encounter in our neighbors? How does that influence our wit-ness? These are just some of the questions we will encounter as Pastor Long shares a version of the class he teaches 8th graders at Concordia. Over the next few weeks we’ll cover religion in general, and an overview of Christianity and Ju-daism. Meets in the Parish Hall at 9:30 am.
Wednesday
Men’s Bible Study Thank, Praise, Serve, and Obey: Having finished 1st & 2nd Samuel, the men have decide to take a look at how God’s grace in Christ shapes our lives on a daily basis. We’ll be using the Rev. William Weedon’s book Thank, Praise, Serve, and Obey to spark discussion and reflection. Texts will be provided. Join us Wednesday mornings
at the Bob Evans on Allen Rd. We meet for an hour or so starting at 6:30 am.
Wednesday Evening Study Group: C.S. Lewis’ Screwtape Letters: Join us as we look at C.S. Lewis’ classic The Screwtape Letters. This imaginative work looks at the temptations Christians face in the midst of ordinary life by presenting a series of “letters” supposedly writ-ten by a senior “tempter” to his young nephew. If you don’t have a copy, we’ll get you one. Meets Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm. The class is discussion format rather than lecture. Thursday:
Afternoon Bible Study: Joshua: -- After 40 years of wandering, it is final-ly time for the Israelites to enter the Promised Land. What are the challenges they face, and how did God sustain and encourage them? Find out as we read through the history of Israel mov-ing into Canaan. We meet Thursdays at 1:00 pm
in the Parish Hall.
