• ORGANISATIONA calendar for each term should be created and displayed near your student’s desk and inprominentthoroughfaresinthehome, suchasthekitchen.Thecalendarortermplannershouldinclude: all co-curricular and social activities, aswell as assignment, assessmentor test dates. This helps the student see the big picture of commitments and not simply a weekly or dailyvisionasschooldiariesordigitaldevicesusuallyallow.Thestudent,andparent,canclearlyseewhenheavyworkloadperiodsoccur,andsocialactivitiescanbetailoredtoensureworkhasapriority. It’s a good idea to sit down with your student every couple of days to discuss theschedule ahead, when thework can be slotted in, and how a parent could help by reducingfamilycommitments,orbysettingboundarieswithsocialengagements.Regularlysittingdowntodiscussworkloadsandtasksdue,reviewingactivitiesandschedulescanhelpstudentslearntobemoreproductiveandorganized.

• FILINGSYSTEMSMasterfoldersshouldbesetupforeachsubjectathome, soaftereachtopiciscompletedthenotes can be placed in appropriate categories. • ASSIGNMENTSA helpful strategy is to keep abreast ofwhen assignments are given. Talking to your studentaboutassignmentexpectations, drawingouttheirunderstandingofthetopic, criteriaandpartsof theassignmentcan instiladeeperappreciation. It’sgoodtoprobeandaskmoreabout theassignment topicwithquestions, as this couldgiveyour studentotherperspectives, andoncemore, help the student feel the parent has a real interest in learning. When planning theworkload for an assignment, parents can help break the work into chunks or parts. This canreduce the sense of the overwhelming enormity of the task and the task can be broken intomanageableparts, whicharescheduledtobedoneintothecalendarordiary.• TESTSSimilarly, parentscanhelpstudentspreparefortestsbyquizzingthem, askingforconceptstobeexplained or helping write practice tests. Explain to your student that memory andunderstandingcan increase if thebrain isusingmultipleprocessestouse information, suchaswriting, reading, speaking, drawing or singing! When tests are returned, focus on what wasachievedandnote concepts to revise. If students knowparents arenot solely focusedon thegrade, but also on the process, and that tests (and assignments) are tools to learn, intrinsicmotivationcandevelop.

• COMMUNICATIONWITHTHESCHOOLIt’s now fully acknowledged that together, parents and teachers play a dual role in educatingstudents, soit’svitaltomaintainopencommunicationwiththeschool. It’simportantforparentstokeepabreastofschool informationconveyedto throughnewsletters, schoolportals,emailsandsoon,asit’snotuncommonforastudenttomissinformationatschool.Thisallowsparentstoflagordiscusswiththeirstudentwhattheschoolisoffering,advisingorsharing.Forexample:a newsletter may alert parents to additional “maths tutorials” offered before school, or“homework help sessions” after school. This reinforces again that the parent is interested intheir student’s learning. It is equally important forparents to advise the schoolof extraneousissueshappeningathome, asthiswouldgiveteachersanunderstandingofatypicalbehaviour, workethic, concentrationetc. An illnessordeath in the family (includinga familypet),parentabsence formore than a fortnight, or challenging issues on the home front, are examples ofwhenparentsshouldcontacttheschool.Moderatedassignments,extensionsonhomework,orrelaxeddetentionscouldresult,andallowthestudenttoresumetheirlearningjourneywithoutadditionalstress. Howeversecondaryschoolstudentsalsoneedtogainskillsandstrategiestodealwith life’s variables, and to become independent, confident problem solvers. So it’s alsoimportant for parents to give students opportunities tomanage issues at school themselves.Parentsshouldnotapproachtheschoolto“fix”everyminorproblem, suchasastudentmissingapage inanexamwhich loweredhisgrade, orastudentfeelingtheyhadbeenmalignedbyapeer.Boththeseinstancesare life-lessonsto learnfromorsolve, soparentsshouldencouragestudentstoaskforapproachteachersthemselveswhenneeded.

The strategies above should be developed with the child, and hopefully will be independentlyadoptedbythestudentwhentheyreachtheirfinalyearsatschool. It’sworthwhilenotingthateachpoint is related to the child’s learning, as this sends a very positive message that the parent isengagedandinterestedinthelearningprocess.
