Professor Mike Bennett, St Gemma’s Professor in Palliative Medicine was a member ofthe expert group that helped develop new guidance published by the National Institute forHealth and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in May and was interviewed by the BBC for their TenO’Clock news on May 22nd and on BBC Breakfast the following morning.

The new clinical guideline is on the safe use of opioids, medications that relieve pain, recognised by the World Health Organisation as essential in the treatment of severe pain. Thenew NICE guideline should help to ensure that when patients receiving palliative care for chronicor incurable illnesses start treatment with strong opiods, the drugs are prescribed safely andconsistently.

Professor Bennett also authored a summary of the guidelines published in the BritishMedical Journal on May 25th. Commenting on the document Professor Bennett said, “Untilnow, there has been little guidance regarding the safe prescribing of opioids, especially whenthe treatment is started by non-specialists such as GPs or hospital doctors not familiar withthese types of medicines. Despite the increased availability of these medicines, pain fromadvanced conditions remains under-treated. This can be due to a variety of reasons such asfears over side-effects or confusion over which opioid treatment would work best. Thisguideline gives clear recommendations and should instigate a real clinical change in the wayopioids are prescribed.”

Professor Bennett, who works between St. Gemma’s Hospice and the University of LeedsSchool of Medicine, has been awarded a National Institute for Health Research ProgrammeGrant to research the management of cancer pain. It will look at simple, practical steps thatcould help patients better control their pain. The work, to be carried out in collaboration withthe University of Leeds, will involve patients who are receiving palliative care and their carers.

Professor Bennett adds, “The biggest barrier to good pain control for patients withadvanced cancer is not the lack of good drugs, but inadequate support and advice, poorcommunication, lack of pain monitoring, and a lack of access to painkillers. By working withpatients and their carers to tackle each of these issues, we hope to minimise patients’ distressfrom pain and reduce the number of avoidable hospital admissions.”

Sheila and Les enjoying delicious treats from Betty’s

At St. Gemma’s, we pride ourselves on providing personalised care for patients and theirfamilies. As well as tailoring each person’s medical and nursing care to their needs andwishes we sometimes help families to fulfil other special requests during their time with us.We've helped to arrange special birthday parties and christenings at the Hospice, sometimes at very short notice. The team are great at pulling out all the stops.

When a recent patient Les found out that he had only a few days to live, he told us how hewished he could take his wife Sheila for a lavish afternoon tea at Betty’s tea room. With thehelp of the daughter of one of our nurses, who works as a waitress at the famous tea room inHarrogate, we put on an afternoon tea to remember. Betty’s kindly provided a selection ofdelicious cakes and pastries, and made freshly brewed tea and served it up to Les and Sheilaat Les’s bedside. It was a very emotional occasion for everyone involved and we were proudto help Les fulfil one of his last wishes. Sadly Les died a few days after this photo was taken.

Thank you to Sheila and her family for allowing us to print this story and photograph. Wewere privileged to help you and your husband share this special time together.

Purrfect ending for feline friends

One of our patients recently asked us if we could helpfind safe homes for a number of her cats. It was veryimportant for her to know that they would be welllooked after when she was no longer able to care forthem. We were particularly concerned about findinga caring home for one of the kittens who had adisabled back leg and wasn’t feeding properly.

Our Social Work team made a number of phonecalls to animal rescue centres across Yorkshire andregrettably they were all full due to the large numberof cats already waiting to be re-homed.

An email was sent around to the Hospice staff tosee if anyone could help. We had a great responsewith lots of suggestions and help offered. Wemanaged to find new homes for all our feline friends. One cat has gone to a lady who works in our charity shop in Otley ; one cat has gone to asecretary from the Hospice and another cat has gone to a lady in Sheffield via one of ourresearchers.

We were really pleased we could help this lady and she is so grateful to the Hospiceteam for our help and support.

A very special afternoon tea

October is Make a Will Month for St. Gemma’s and weare again being supported by local solicitors to giveyou the opportunity to have your Will or Codicil writtenfor free, in exchange for making a donation to theHospice.

Take the opportunity to organise your wishes and as-sets, whilst also knowing that your donation will providea way for St. Gemma’s to continue to give the highestlevel of care to local people living with incurable illnesses.

Currently, only 3 in 10 people make a Will. The ab-sence of formal arrangements can cause a lot of distressto family members at a time when they are already veryupset, so Make a Will Month allows you the chance toput your affairs in order now.

There is no obligation to leave a gift in your Will to St.Gemma’s, but if you choose to do so, the gift would betax free, meaning your vital contribution would go evenfurther towards patient care.

If you already have a Will in place but wish St.Gemma’s Hospice to benefit in some way, your initialarrangements can easily be added to through a Codicil. To benefit from this offer :1. Cut out and complete the Entitlement Voucher.2. Arrange an appointment to be seen in October by

one of the participating solicitors.3. At the appointment, the solicitor will hand you an

envelope.4. Place the entitlement voucher and donation in to

the envelope and seal it. Donations can be made via cash, cheque or creditcard. The offer applies to standard Wills, Mirror Wills (e.g.

two identical Wills written for husband and wife) andCodicils (changes made to your current Will). If you findthat your Will is not standard and involves specialisedlegal advice, your solicitor will discuss this with you andagree a fee with you before proceeding. For further in-formation about Make a Will Month, contact Tracie.

A Wimbledon WindfallA gift left in a Will can be a percentage ofyour estate, fixed sum of money or a per-sonal possession, even a betting slip !

In 2003 Nick Newlife, from Oxfordshire, madea wager of £1,520 with odds of 66/1, that RogerFederer would win seven Wimbledon titles by2019. Mr Newlife died in 2009 but had left thebetting slip to a charity in his Will.

Federer’s victory in the 2012 WimbledonMen’s Final was the seventh time he had wonWimbledon, giving the charity a windfall of£101,840.
