Dear Parents, My time at Rose Park PS has drawn to a close. It has been a special experience to be a part of such an amazing school. It has continued to be a vibrant place with so much happening. I have enjoyed being a part of the School Governing Council and to be at the school during Book Week. Thank you to everyone who has made me feel welcome. NAPLAN You may have seen in the media that the NAPLAN results are due to be released imminently. The school will share these with parents as soon as they are available. Currently the information we have received as part of the NAPLAN online process is incomplete and is not ready to be shared. WAKAKIRRI Another special experience for me whilst at Rose Park was being able to attend the Wakakirri performance at the Entertainment Centre. We have received several written pieces of feedback from

families who have described their enjoyment of the performance and acknowledging the hard work of Kim Copeland and the dedicated group of supporters, including Reception teachers Clare Rodger and Vicky Jones. The joy on the performers’ faces, and the way that the older students cared for the younger ones was very evident. The school has won two prizes for the performance. ‘Best Original Idea’ for the category we were in, which was schools who had been in Wakakirri for less than three years and also ‘Best Hair and Make-up’. Parking It is has come to our attention that parking remains an issue around the school. There are limited parks around the immediate perimeter of the school and so we encourage you to park and walk your child into the school. There have been some instances of double parking which have stopped parents being able to leave once they have dropped their children to school. Burnside Council is aware of the parking problems and may be patrolling before and after school.

Scarecrows The year 6/7 teachers and students have sent their scarecrows to the Royal Adelaide Show for judging. These art pieces, which are breathtaking to look at with their attention to detail and bright colours, have enabled the students to utilise essential 21st century skills such as problem solving, using creativity, being collaborative and displaying resilience when the answer is not immediately at hand. I hope that you get the chance to see them at the Show and hopefully notice the many awards they will win!

Play areas after school To ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and their families, the play areas within the school have been reviewed and updated. Notification has been sent to families on Skoolbag. Teachers have shared the new Yard Play rules with students, with many walking around the school to ensure a clear understanding. One of the challenges for the school, is our duty of care at the end of the day. A yard duty teacher will supervise outside from 3:20pm to 3:40pm. Please note that this time is not a play time, like recess or lunch, but a time for students to gather their belongings and leave the school grounds. At 3:40pm, our duty of case ceases and students should either be in the care of their families, or within the OHSC facility. Students who do not have a parent on-site at 3:40pm will be directed to the Front Office where their family will be contacted. Student safety is our priority.

Finally, the school looks forward to the return of Di Burrell next week. She has travelled extensively and I know she is happy to be returning to Rose Park PS as Principal.

Best wishes for the rest of the year,

Julie James Acting Principal

Student Led Conferences From Monday 10 September, teachers will be offering Student Led Conferences. These conferences involve your child as an active and essential member in the sharing of their learning. We ask that every effort be made for siblings not to be present during these Conference to ensure that each child is able to fully celebrate their achievements.

Please note that teachers will allocate only one time slot per student. Further, Year 5 students will display and/or demonstrate their learning, to share with families, as part of the Exhibition rather than individual conferences.

We will again be using School Interviews Online for bookings and Ed Smart. If you have not already received an email from Ed Smart, please go to: www.schoolinterviews.com.au and enter the code mrpdf. Playground The construction of our new Junior Primary Playground is now complete! Students celebrated it’s opening on Thursday just before recess. We thank our community for their patience and understanding during construction. Renee Lynn - Deputy Principal

2018 PYP Exhibition

Wednesday 19th September

at 5:30pm in Centenary Hall.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) exhibition represents a significant event in the life of a PYP school with students synthesizing the essential elements of the programme to share with the whole school community. This year’s exhibition takes place under the transdisciplinary theme ‘Sharing the Planet’. Students will explore the rights and responsibilities in-volved in the struggle to share finite resources with oth-er people and with other living things. Students engage in a collaborative, transdisciplinary inquiry process that involves them in identifying, investigating and offering solutions to real-life issues or problems. The exhibition has a number of key purposes:

For students to engage in an in-depth inquiry

To provide students with an opportunity to

demonstrate independence and responsibility for

their own learning

To provide students with an opportunity to explore

multiple perspectives

For students to synthesize and apply their learning of

previous years and to reflect upon their journey

throughout the PYP

To provide an authentic process for assessing student

understanding

To demonstrate how students can take action as a

result of their learning

To unite the students, teachers, parents and other

members of the school community in a collaborative

experience that incorporates the essential elements

of the PYP

Transdisciplinary Theme

Sharing the planet.

Central Idea

The choices we make have an impact on our

environment.

Lines of inquiry

The earth's finite resources are there for all living organisms (Responsibility). • The short term and long term impact of actions on

the environment (Causation). • Human choices affect animal choices (Responsibility

and Causation). • Personal choices have an effect on the environment

(Responsibility).

Concepts

Causation, Responsibility.

All students will be given the opportunity to visit the

Exhibition on Wednesday.

During Book Week, we were fortunate enough to have local author and illustrator, Sally Heinrich, visit Rose Park. During her class lessons, Sally spoke about her childhood and enlightened the students on why she chose to become an author. She described the process of taking a story from an idea to a finished book and also taught the students some drawing skills; which she uses when illustrating her own picture books.

Book Week Parade Thank you to everyone for making the Book Week Parade another huge success. The students’ costumes were vibrant and creative, which made judging really hard for the SRC Executive. We commend those families who went to the extra effort of creating an original costume at home with their children. It was magnificent to see children exuding such passion for their favourite book.

The 2018 theme ‘Find Your Treasure’ meant we had some incredible pirate costumes, which included Mr Michell’s, who had a live parrot to accompany his costume and as a result was the winner of the Teacher’s Prize. Congratulations to Marcus, Kai, Ella, Ryder, Ava and Sophie who were the costume winners this year – they’ve received a Book Fair prize for their efforts.

Happy reading everyone.

Wakakirri 2018 After two very busy terms of rehearsals, 55 excited students finally made their way to Adelaide Entertainment Centre for Rose Park Primary School’s first ever involvement in the Story Dance Competition Wakakirri. All the students involved did an amazing job and proudly represented our Rose Park community. We were also fortunate enough to win two awards, best hair and make-up and best original story. This was a huge honour for a first year school and is credit to all the hard work of everyone involved. Big thankyou to the wonderful Mums who assisted with costumes and the dedicated teachers who supported the program, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Music News

Festival of Music The South Australian Public Primary School Music Festival is just weeks away. This is the premier opportunity for us to participate in music activities in this State. Schools from across the State come to perform in the 13 concerts during September. On 21 August the choir travelled to Magic Millions at Morphetville Racecourse to participate in the first rehearsal for our Festival Theatre performance. Singing with 350 other students created a fabulous sound. Students from Rose Park are involved with choir, as soloists, as members of the auditioned orchestra, foyer concert performers, choreography leaders, as assisting artists during the performances and as comperes for the whole concert!

Our choir is performing with different choirs, many from country centres, Concert 1 is on Tuesday 18 September at 7.30 at the Adelaide Festival Theatre.

Tickets are available from www.bass.net.au, by phone 131 246.

Rose Park Concert band will be playing at the Foyer concert on Stage 1 on Saturday 22 September.

No tickets required. Darwin Rocks! Rehearsals are well underway and students are working hard to learn all their parts. The tickets for this event to be staged on Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 October are available from September 1 from Trybookings. We have an excellent starter team to help with aspects of props and costumes, but would certainly welcome more supporters. Please contact me or Sue Cayzer mob 0438418465 to join this prestigious support team. Our next meeting is Friday 31 August at 2.30 in the staff room. If you have any comments, feedback or enquiries please contact me [email protected]

Debating

Term 3 Rose Park Debating News Welcome to Round 3 of Rose Park Primary School Debating. Our students are now seasoned-debaters and are continuing to show improved confidence and argument formation within their speeches.

The valuable feedback from the adjudicator in all debates is allowing our students to continually improve and refine their techniques.

In Round 3, students engaged with the topic ‘That all school students should learn an Asian language’. Students explored the economic and geo-political reasons for this proposition and engaged strongly with a demanding topic. It was pleasing to see some students experimenting with thematic rebuttal, which involves the grouping of rebuttal points under broad themes.

Results (Round 3)

All speakers achieved excellent points for their method, manner and matter, with Sreehitha achieving the highest result for an individual speaker with 78 points. After Round 3, all teams have won 2 debates and lost 1. Round 4 commences 11 August, which gives us just under 3 weeks to prepare well-researched and rehearsed debates. This is the last round before the finals and all teams have the opportunity to reach to the final rounds.

The topic for our next debate is: ‘That we should have a complete right to free speech’.

Reminder: coaching is every Wednesday after school and Round 4 debates are September 11-13.

Regards, The Year 6/7 Team - Michael Michell, Zara Lygo, Karsan Hutchinson and Jane Hopper
