Castle Hill RSL Photography Club Newsletter Page 1 December 2011 Welcome to the last Viewpoint for 2011. As I write this, we are in the final stages of planning our Annual presentation on December 10 which should be an exciting evening and our chance to recognise all the winners for their work during the year and to have a good time. The program for 2012 is almost complete and should be ready for publication shortly. We are looking at another year of challenging set subjects for our competitions. There has been a lot of work done by the Competition Committee, Program Coordinator, Social Coordinator, Training Coordinator and others to bring this program together including booking lecturers and judges. Please remember that all positions on the different committees are voluntary and recognition needs to be given to all for the amount of personal time they devote to the club. Thanks also go to the many members who have helped to set up and put away print stands etc. Your efforts also have not gone without notice. Thanks must go to all the lecturers and judges that have contributed their knowledge and views. We all owe thanks to the Directors and Staff of the RSL Club for their support and assistance during the year. In closing, may I wish each and every one of you a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. See you on 7 February 2012 when we meet to do it all again. Well that‟s it for this year, Remember you don‟t take a photograph, you make it, Robert Shelberg President, CHRSLPC . Linnwood House Guildford, October Outing Our weekday outing in October was in a different style to the „normal‟ outings. With only a limited number included in this photo shoot, a small group of pre-registered members came together to photograph at the historic Linnwood House. With models dressed in period costume and the backdrop of the historic residence we were able to achieve some authentic looking images. Sorry to those members who expressed an interest in this shoot and missed out, we will try to organize a similar outing next year. Many thanks to Bob Cook for his assistance in setting up this outing and also for bringing along his studio lights and accessories to allow us to take some of the interior photos. Also many thanks to our models who spent the day with us, their patience and stamina were greatly appreciated.

The November outing will be our final weekday outing for 2011. We will start back in February next year, please check the club reminder notice for details, or e-mail Deanna on [email protected] If any members have photographs from our weekday outings that could be included in the outing reports, please forward to me by email. Thank you, Deanna.

Photography Dictionary: C and D Contact sheet: A print of all the frames from a roll of film, arranged in strips. A contact print allows you to select what pictures you wish to enlarge. You make one by putting photopaper under your negative sheet, then you expose it. A contact printer, made up of a sheet of clean glass and a base, will flatten the negative sheet out and allow you a clean contact print. Contrast: The range of difference in the light to dark areas of a negative, print, or slide (also called density); the brightness range of a subject or the scene lighting. Cropping: the removal of unwanted sections of an image when enlarging. D: Depth of field: The distance in front of and behind the absolute-focus of a picture that is in acceptable focus. Depth of field is increased by increasing the f stop (making the aperture smaller. f/1.8 has a very small DOF, where f/22 has a large DOF) Development: the chemical process by which an invisible latent image is converted into a visible one. Diaphragm: See aperture Differential (or Selective) Focus: A technique used to isolate a subject by using a large aperture to produce a small depth of field so that areas not in the subject plane are un-sharp. A focus is created specifically around the desired object. Diffraction: The scattering of light as it passes close to an opaque surface such as a lens diaphragm. At very small apertures, loss of image quality can occur. Diffuser: Translucent material capable of scattering transmitted light, producing softer illumination.
