PRESIDENT’S RAMBLE Weekday Run to Junee - 11

th October

Our latest weekday outing to Junee (via the back

roads) was well attended. Organiser Paul Ballad

and Janet led in the Peugeot 504, with Peter and

Sue McCarthy (Ford Telstar), Ted and Joan

Strachan (Galant), Ken and Daina Trethewey

(Jaguar XJ6), Tim O’Keeffe (Triumph Dolomite),

me (Cressida) and Ray Douglas (modern) made up

the rest of the convoy.

We departed Cootamundra on time and had a quick

morning tea stop at Bethungra.

From there we were led along some interesting

roads that I had only travelled once before, through

Eurongilly and Wantabadgery, stopping at a natural

‘lookout’ on McGlede’s Hill Road.

Paul advised that we were near the spot where the

bushranger ‘Captain Moonlite’ (Andrew George

Scott) was captured during a shootout at

McGlede’s Hut in November 1879, the battle

believed to have been bigger than Ned Kelly’s last

stand. It must have been significant as police had

been sent from both Wagga and Gundagai.

Pictures of the great view were taken and, keen to

get out of the wind, the convoy departed for Junee,

arriving at the Station Café right on time. As most

would know, there were many and varied choices

for lunch, and it was a good thing that Paul had

booked us a table.

Several of the group had commitments for late

afternoon (in Cootamundra or Harden), so it was

decided to skip the visit to Broadway Museum, as

most of us had been there previously. We departed

around 3 p.m. for a pleasant drive home.

November Meeting

Don’t forget that the next meeting (5th

November)

is in Harden and advise Sue McCarthy if you

would like to dine at the Bowling Club prior to the

Meeting.

For now, safe and happy motoring to all.

Hugh

ANNUAL VEHICLE INSPECTION

All vehicles on Conditional Registration must be inspected

and passed for roadworthiness prior to registration renewal

each year.

This year the CAMC Inspection Day will be held on

Sunday 2nd December 2018 commencing at 8.30AM

at the Automotive Workshop of the Cootamundra TAFE

College, Mackay Street Cootamundra.

When you present your vehicle for inspection, please bring

with you:

(a) Registration renewal papers (if you have received them),

and

(b) Annual Club Membership renewal fee ($30), or your

receipt showing that you have already paid.

When your vehicle has been inspected and passed and

your membership paid, the “Conditional Registration

Historic Vehicle Declaration” form (included with

your registration renewal – but I have some in case

you have not yet received your papers) can be

completed and signed declaring that:

(a) ) The vehicle is in a safe operating condition, and

(b) ) The registered operator is a financial member of

the club.

If your registration renewal is due during December or

January bring the vehicle to the inspection day, even though

you may not have received your renewal papers.

Any member who may not be able to attend the Inspection

Day on the 2nd December, or has more than one vehicle to be

inspected, could bring their vehicle to the TAFE on a

Wednesday night between 6 and 9 PM when club members

(and inspectors) are at the weekly workshop session.

If you intend to do this, please ring Alan Thompson to

confirm appointment.

For new members who may wish to put a vehicle on

Conditional Registration for the first time, RMS application

forms will be available.

There will be tea and coffee on hand for morning tea.

Club Inspectors: Please make a note of the Inspection Day

date and try to be available. Your help is needed and

appreciated.

“COOLEST CARS” ?

6,000 readers of U.K. motor magazine AutoExpress in a

readers’ poll of the “coolest” car voted the LANDROVER

DEFENDER into 4th

place.

Why? Well, its supporters chose it because their opinion is

that off-roader vehicles are cool. They voted for the latest

LandRover because it is the class-leading off-road vehicle.

They like its technology and capability even if they don’t

venture off the tarmac.

Even if they don’t go off-road, customers feel it’s good to

know its capabilities are there. In their opinion - It’s a cool

car !

Talking about LandRovers . . . (information found by Doug

Wright):

Leaving the Solihull factory in April, 1948, LandRover

No. 7 launched the LandRover name at Amsterdam Motor

Show.

1948 till 1955 – LandRover R7 remained in the Solihull

factory as a development experimental model.

1955 sold for farm and roadwork. Then sold on to Sutton

Coldfield, and sold on to Stratford-upon-Avon, and sold on

to Wales in 1968.

And parked in a field for 20 years.

Twenty years of sitting out in rain and frost, overgrown by

weeds and inhabited by wildlife, the car sunk up to its axles

in mud.

1988 – Recognised by a collector -- the significant No. 7

chassis number. He acquired it. . . And stored it . . . in his

garden, for another 28 years!

By 2016, through the network of tip-offs, news of the car,

reached Land Rover Classic, a restoration group, who

bought it for an undisclosed sum. Now, . . worth more than

$100,000, Restore or preserve as is?

PAST EVENTS 22 September: Some members spectated the 140 strong Tractor Trek at Young.

Some members – a 1958 VW and a 1950 RILEY supported the Opening Day of a Museum dedicated to the

history of Stockinbingal.

Some members’ club cars were to be found parked amongst the attendees at the commemorative Open Day to

hear the 100 year old Pipe Organ being demonstrated in the Uniting Church at Murrumburrah.

October Long-Weekend Narrandera : Some members participated in the Street Parade of 50 old cars for Narrandera’s - Rock n Roll Festival.

Coolamon : Some members participated in a huge showing of old cars at Coolamon’s - Historic Fire-Engine Muster.

Boorowa : Some members spectated Boorowa’s Running of The Sheep - where there were lots of old cars.

All the above are worthwhile to attend again next year. But here’s a report of another October Long-Weekend event

that some members have attended in old cars in past years:

Barellan Heavy Working Horses - October Long- Weekend On Saturday 29

th September John and I travelled to Barellan for the Heavy Working Horses weekend in glorious

weather.

Over 300 campsites were on the grounds with Clydesdales and other Heavy Breeds numbering upwards of 170. They

demonstrated all manner of work in equipment and implements of the great Heritage days.

Wool bales were loaded onto a wagon, using what is known as a “Kicker and Gin Pole” – where a harnessed Clydie

walks out at right angles to the wagon, and the heavy bale of wool is flicked onto the wagon.

Another interesting full working display was a Chaff Cutter, Grister and Water Pump set up in such a way that 1 Clydie

on a pole, walking in a circle – turned the huge wheel and wide leather belts – to work the lot. Horses were changed at

regular intervals, of course.

A truly awesome sight was a team of 26 Clydesdales hitched to a huge wool wagon.

Watching the harnessing up of this team was amazing in itself! Three drivers were on the reins from atop the wagon -

a driver for the leaders, one for the body of the team, and one for the shafters.

The team was hitched up in 8 sections of 3 across - making 24, plus the 2 shafters.

Another awesome sight was the 32 strong Bullock Team hitched to a huge wool wagon.

This team was yoked as pairs. 16 pairs.

The bullocks are “driven” by 2 men walking along each side with huge bull whips and voice command.

The expertise and dedication of these men to keep our heritage alive is wonderful.

And this Team was trucked all the way from Central Queensland!!

So much was happening out there, one cannot possibly see it in one day. Crowds were huge. It was like walking up

Pitt Street Sydney in peak hour!!! People were standing 4-5 deep around the arena and it is a huge showground arena.

Numbers of spectators certainly in the thousands.

The camel races and rides were very popular, also rides on a donkey wagon, and horse coach. Rope makers and whip

makers were crowded around, and the farrier making horseshoes on the coals with bellows – and then demonstrating

“hot shoeing” of the lovely big placid Clydesdales and stock horses.

A Model A Ford was set up as a rabbit trapper’s ute and full campsite. Furphy water tanks were on display and a demo

of hot-tyreing was shown.

There were many stalls and sites selling all manner of old wares, clothing, antiques etc.

Entertainment for the younger kids, too.

A group of friendly, helpful country people making up an extremely hard working committee. Thank You for a

wonderful day and the opportunity for some amazing photos.

Next year will be the 10th

Anniversary of this event and the 100 year anniversary of the Barellan Showground.

Put it in your diaries, even if petrol runs in your veins, I am sure you will enjoy seeing original forms of Horse-

Power.

Wagga Vintage Motorcycle Club Annual Rally On Saturday 7 October -- from Cootamundra : Craig Golden, his wife Sonya, and myself travelled to JUNEE to join members of

the Wagga Vintage Motorcycle Club on their ride to Coolamon.

50 bikes were soon parked in the Coolamon main street.

Very nice pies and coffee were enjoyed at the Coolamon Bakehouse, followed by a visit to the Fire Station Museum.

A bike which caught my attention was an original early model ARIEL with a Dusting Sidecar fitted.

We then returned to Junee for a very pleasant ride back in excellent weather. JOHN SIMPFENDORFER 11.10.18

The Heavy Horse Show at Barellan is recommended for next

Squeeze in a joke: One evening, after the honeymoon, Tom was working on his Harley motorbike in the garage. His new wife was

standing there by the bench watching him.

After a long period of silence she finally said: “Honey, I’ve just been thinking, now that we’re married, maybe it’s time you quit

spending so much of your time out here in the garage. You probably should consider selling your Harley and all that welding

equipment; they take up so much of your time. And that gun collection and fishing gear, they just take up so much space.

And you know the boat is such an ongoing expense; and you hardly use it.

I also think you should lose all those stupid model airplanes and your home brewing equipment. And what’s the use of that vintage

hot rod sports car?”

Tom got a horrified look on his face.

She noticed and said, “Darling, what’s wrong?” He replied “Just for a minute there, you were starting to sound like my ex-wife.”

“Ex-wife!?” She shouted, “YOU NEVER TOLD ME YOU WERE MARRIED BEFORE!” Tom replied, “I wasn’t.”
