On October 17, 2013, Lonza hosted the Mapleton Community Emergency Response Exercise. A chemical release was simulated which resulted in a vapor cloud moving into residential areas.

Our neighboring businesses, In-gredion, Evonik Goldschmidt, Chemtura, Caterpillar Mapleton, and Air Liquide responded as necessary by providing aid or sheltering in place. The Timber Hollis Fire Department also provid-ed their services and had a chance to practice their response to a chemical release.

A reverse 911 was conducted by Peoria 911 during this time. Resi-

dents who use land lines and were within 1 mile of Lonza should have received a recorded message asking them to shelter in place.

The exercise was successful and produced recommendations that

helped shorten our re-sponse time, strengthen our communications between neighboring plants and outside emer-gency services, and prompt neighboring companies to find ways to train together to im-prove mutual aid.

We would like to give special thanks to Evonik,

Chemtura, and Timber Hollis Fire Department for providing people to help simulate a response for the exercise.

The event needed observers to pro-vide feedback on how we can im-prove our response operations. We thank those agencies who provided that assistance: Pekin Fire Depart-ment, Village of Mapleton resi-dents, The Red Cross, Caterpillar Mapleton, Peoria Fire Department, and a University of Illinois Hazard-ous Materials Training Program representative.

Peoria County EMA and Illinois Dept. of Transportation, who were also instrumental in the completion of this event, have our gratitude as well.

During the month of Febru-ary, Evonik’s Emergency Re-sponse Team practiced a con-fined space rescue. A manne-quin was placed inside an empty tank and was rescued to prepare in the case of an actual emergency. Confined spaces are areas that people occasionally enter that have limited exits and other haz-ards.

Three new state-of-the-art tank wagons were added to the Chemtura Fleet this year. This will allow us to meet our growing customer demands. Chemtura has customers as far away as California, Texas, New Jersey and Canada. These new trailers were built using the best technology in the transportation field and all meet or exceed DOT re-quirements. Two are insulat-ed to prevent the product from freezing.

This investment shows the commitment that Chemtura has to the organometallics business and the Mapleton Plant.
