LAFAYETTE CHAMBER Promote a Vibrant Local Economy | Foster Collaboration & Leadership | Influence Public Policy | Support Local Education NEWS LETTER November/December 2017 Holiday Season kicks off with “It’s a Wonderful Life” Friday, Dec. 1st Bedford Falls may have little in common with Lafayette, until it’s Holiday Season. This event is in it’s fifth year. Presented by the Chamber and sponsored by Branagh Development and The Dana Green Real Estate Team. They have been underwriting the white twinkle lights we all enjoy each holiday season up and down Mt. Diablo Blvd. Festivities begin at 4:00pm and runs till 6:30pm. The fun includes a visit from Santa, one-of-a-kind photo ops, live musical entertainment from our local students, a tree lighting ceremony and a holiday sing-along. Hot Chocolate and other goodies will be available and there will be crafts for the kids to participate in. For the full entertainment schedule, visit www.lafayettechamber.org. A New Chapter for your Chamber of Commerce I am not sure we could compare our journey with Jack Kerouac or the Grateful Dead. But for us, the staff of your Chamber, it truly has been a “long strange trip” since the fire took our office, our home and our comfort zone. As Ken Kesey once said, “Since we don’t know where we’re going, we have to stick together in case someone gets there.” Alas, we are on approach, wheels down and ready to land in our new digs. Happy to have our new office just around the corner from our old home and we are right back in the heart of town. By the time this newsletter drops, we should be moved in. The new address is 251 Lafayette Circle, Suite 150. Phone numbers and emails remain the same. We have had wonderful support from so many members helping us get the space ready. Of course, at some point we’ll have an open house and celebrate the move. But don’t wait to stop in and say hello. A very special thank you goes out to the staff at the Lafayette Unified School District. For the past 12 weeks we have had the privilege of sharing space and getting to know the team. They have been gracious, generous and if I didn’t know any better, happy to have us as guests. We have felt so welcome and there are no words to express our gratitude for the kindness. Rachel, Dawn Lynn, Mar- ilyn, Danny and gang, you made what could have been a very difficult time for us, fun and easy. So it’s on to the next chapter for the Chamber. Soon it will be time to write my book. I am working on Titles. What do you think of “Everything I need to know I learned from Ann Denny.” Or we could use “The Chamber runs on Chocolate – stories about Karen Rose, The Lost Years.” Business Person of the Year – Save the Date Please mark your calendar for Friday, February 2, 2018 for the annual Chamber dinner. Hear from Mayor Don Tatzin as he delivers the “State of the City” address. Welcome the New Chamber Board and President elect Kathy Merchant. Then celebrate with our 2018 Business Person of the Year. The Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa is the place. You can find a nomination form in this newsletter. Please nominate someone you feel is worthy of this honor.

Parking Committee Completes its Assignment Like the USS Mino, what started out as a 6 month tour for the committee that looked at all aspects of parking in Lafayette, took over three years to complete. The Committee is now presenting their findings and recommendations to Council and the city’s commissions. Is it possible Lafayette has over 10,000 parking spaces in the downtown? Maybe, yet 70% of them are on private property and inaccessible to shoppers and employees. Does BART have any responsibility to help ease the parking shortage? Why are our employers not encouraging their employees to use alternative transportation? And is there on-street parking that is not being used because there are meters installed? All these questions along with parking ratios, in-leu fees and garages were examined. Keep posted for their final recommendations. They have already met with the Chamber members along with a presenta- tion to our board. The good news is that new technology is helping make parking less of a challenge. You can review the presentation by visiting www.lovelafayette.org.
