Chantal will work on a series for a period, and then change. Initially Chantal painted people in movement –stunning pictures of ballet, tango and flamenco dancers. She would video people dancing, for example at a rehearsal, and then pause the video and make drawings, then little pen and ink paintings, and subsequently oil paintings. Following a visit by her cousin from Paris who was a performing clown, named Mme Bettina, she created a series titled Mme Bettina. This in turn led to an interest in makeup and masks and she produced a series of African faces made up for tribal ceremonies. This was followed by an exploration of European use of mask - the Venetian masquerade using paint and collage. Earlier series were all oil paintings. Then, reflecting a period of sadness in her life, she used black and white pastel and white acrylic with black ink. Slowly the colours came back. After being given a piano accordion she and her partner, who played the banjo, created a little band called Sacrebleu. This led to her next series which explored stained glass windows, the cutting of spaces, and collage and music. Like Kandinsky and Klee before her, Chantal is very interested in the link between painting and music. She, with others, have performed at Manly Art Gallery and other venues demonstrating synaesthesia – where one sense evokes another. For example when hearing a certain sound induces the visualization of a certain colour. So you can see the music and hear the colour”. Chantal demonstrated this for us. Painting to music she applied colour to a large disc in response to the musical notes being played. It was a very beautiful performance. Guest Speaker June Chantal Mahoney Figurative Artist

Our guest artist, Chantal Mahoney, delighted us at the last general meeting with short video presentations of her wonderful work together with a demonstration of synaesthesia.

Born in Toulouse, France, Chantal originally studied music. After coming to Australia she completed a degree at the National Art School. For over 11 years she has worked at her studio at Headland Park, Mosman. The studio, although a working studio, welcomes the public to look and learn.

“So you can see the music and hear the colour”.

Chantal demonstrated this for us. Painting to music she applied colour to a large disc in response to the musical notes being played. It was a very beautiful performance.

Chantal’s advice: “Free yourself, experiment, paint what you want, have something to say, learn what you want to say.”

As your life changes, so too will you art. Thank you Chantal for such a stimulating evening.

Artists Pickup

5pm 31 July

Joe is an Australian watercolour artist,

though he also work with other mediums

such as Pen and Ink and Pastel.

He has been painting with watercolour for

over fourteen years and is more

passionate about it now than ever.

Watercolours when done well are hard to

beat. They have a fluid, spontaneous

quality speaking of confidence, skill and a

clear message of what the artist wanted to

say.

While primarily self taught, over the years

he has had the pleasure of studying under

some wonderful tutors at workshops he

has attended, three of these artists include

Joseph Zbukvic, Greg Allen and Alvaro

Castagnet.

Joe’s paintings cover a wide range of

subjects including portraits ,seascapes,

landscape, flowers, wildlife and

townscapes. He does not feel inclined to

specialise in any one category as any

subject can make an interesting work of

art.

Joe has been exhibiting at regional and

National art shows over this period at

which he has sold many paintings and

received many of awards. In 2009 He won

the prestigious John Copes Watercolour

Prize.

Joe has also also exhibited and sold

paintings at other major exhibitions such

as the Sydney Royal Agricultural Easter

Show and the Blacktown Art Show.

The Australian Artist Magazine has

published his articles on two occasions.

Joe is a member of the Macquarie Towns

Art Society as well as the Nepean Art

Society at which he teaches watercolour

and runs regular workshops.

Demonstration

The Society has arranged with Paul Lovegrove from Canson a 'Paint Paper Play' demonstration of Canson products at the Gordon Guide Hall on Wednesday, 15 June, 1-3 pm. • Expect to try a large variety of brands featuring Canson papers, Princeton brushes and Schmincke paints. • Expect to learn a great deal of useful and potentially game changing information. • Expect to discover products you never even knew existed. • Expect to go home with special purchases at unbelievable prices which are exclusive to members on the day. Members wishing to attend should contact Jan Harrington-Johnson at: [email protected]

We will have a new Eftpos terminal for the July Awards exhibition from Tyro Payments, which should be more reliable and easy to use. We also have a new Sales Desk phone which is a great improvement on the old one.

Prizes at the Awards Exhibition will be paid by direct deposit to the Artist’s bank account rather than by cheque. This will mean that the funds should be in your bank account on the Monday following the Awards Night, all the quicker to spend on those planned purchases of new paints and paper! Of course, cheques will still be available for those who don’t use direct deposit.

The May Profit and Loss and the 2016 Budget were presented at the General Meeting on June 7 and copies can be emailed to members on request.

Payments can be made to the Society at any time by post, direct deposit or online at website to:

Three Day Outdoor Oil Painting

Warwick Fuller is giving a 3 day oil painting workshop in the Kanimbla Valley to be held on the 14th 15th 16th October at Warrigal Homestead, Little Hartley, NSW. See the website:

www.warrigalhomestead.com

The group will be limited to about ten energetic painters with experience in oils. He will be giving demonstrations and helping you individually while you paint.

For all details and contact go to Warwick’s website: http://warwickfuller.com/tuition/

Drawing/Mixed Media

We had a great workshop with 14 people. Michael took us through some basic sketching techniques, finding shapes by adding tone and adding line and other detail. We worked with charcoal, graphite, pastel, and ink - using broken sticks as our pen nibs. Everyone was engaged and received lots of tutoring advice and assistance from Michael, and we all thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Drawing and Watercolour

Susan will demonstrate her unique method of using watercolour and drawing media to create fresh and lively images. Traditionally trained in all aspects of drawing and painting, Susan has taught at TAFE and community colleges and was a gallery guide at the Art Gallery of NSW. She tutors on regular painting trips to Norfolk Island and next semester begins tutoring a Monday evening class at Ku-ring-gai Art Centre, Roseville, where she taught for many years. You will enjoy this workshop and Susan's gentle encouragement.

Michael Herron Workshop Report Saturday 14 May 2016

Along the MacDonnell Ranges - a workshop in Oils or Acrylics

The subject of the workshop is The MacDonnell Ranges, which roll like a caterpillar east and west out of Alice Springs, seemingly with no end, they just go on and on. As I work 'en plein air' most of the time, I work very quickly, in an impressionistic manner, and by doing the demo in my usual way, I think you will learn how to SIMPLIFY when working from a photograph. I will work step by step so that it is easy to follow. I will bring a selection of photographs for everyone to use.
