GREAT NEWS FOR
FRESHWATER AQUARISTS -Introducing the AquaNano 40
A nano tank is simply a smallaquarium, usually cube shaped, withintegrated filtration and lighting andhas become very popular withmarine aquarists to keep tiny piecesof slow growing corals and fish andinverts which may well beoverlooked in a larger aquarium.
Now we have such a
tank especially forthe freshwaterenthusiast and thesewould make abeautiful setup forsmaller fish such astetras or a
spectacular male guppy tank.The AquaNano 40, not surprisingly,measures 40 x 40 x 40cm and holdsapproximately 51 litres. At the rear
of the aquariumis an inbuiltbiological andmechanicalfilter which alsohouses the 55Wheater and the500lt/hrcirculationpump. Lighting is provided with abright and efficient 18W PL lamp toenhance the colours of youraquarium inhabitants.Whilst this tank is designedprimarily as a freshwater setup, withthe addition of a protein skimmer itcould be used to house a fewseahorses and/or small shrimp etc.The AquaNano40 is well priced at$199 inclusive of tank, filtration, heating and lighting.

FRESHWATERFISH OF THE MONTH
RATHBUNS BLOODFIN TETRAWhilst there are a few varieties oftetras know as bloodfins, these are
the less commonlyseen Rathbuns
Bloodfin Tetra.They grow a littlelarger than some,reaching 4.5 to 5
cm in length. When settled in aplanted aquarium they show abeautiful red in the posterior area.Rathbuns bloodfins are quite apeaceful fish and will happily schoolwith other tetras, particularly glassbloodfins. Whilst generally hardy
once settled, care should be takento acclimatise these fish slowly whenintroducing them to the tank asthey do not like sudden changes inwater parameters. Feeding is easywith flake, granules, small pelletsand frozen foods all being readilyaccepted. These are a fish whichmay respond well to colour foods toenhance the red colouration. Malescan be distinguished by the white
tips on their fins.Normally $4.35 each.JANUARY SPECIAL 5 FOR $16.50
FRESHWATER PLANT OFTHE MONTH -BLUE STRICTA
Blue Stricts is a hardybunch plant whichmakes a greatbackdrop for lower
growing plants. It willgrow to the top of the
water (and above) in mostaquariums and can be pinched outto encourage growth low down. Thegreen colouration will vary fromdark to lime according to lightingconditions. Regularly $4.99 bunch.THIS MONTH $3.99 BUNCH.
MARINE FISH OF THE MONTH BICOLOR BLENNY
These perky little guys have acomical face and are most endearingto keep in the marine aquarium. The
colour on the rear portion of the fishvaries from yellow to deep orangeand they have a blue outline on theeye. Males have an extended firstray on the first dorsal fin. BicolorBlennies are great scavengers and
will scrapealgae fromthe glasswith theirsharp teeth.
They preferto sit on the
bottom of the aquarium or on arocky ledge from which they willdash out at feed time as they arequite greedy feeders. Feeding iseasy as they will accept almost anytype of marine aquarium food, butbe sure to offer them plenty ofgreen in the form of algae sheetsetc. if there is not much algae
present in your tank.Although usually peaceful, BicolorBlennies can be a little aggressivetowards others of their own speciesif kept in smaller tanks where theycan not form their own territories. They have also been known toexhibit this trait towards othersimilarly patterned fish such as royalgrammas and royal dottybacks, perhaps they need glasses?? As
Bicolor Blennies are a small growingfish, reaching only 11cm maximum, they are ideal for nano tanks andalso do well with seahorses. Ofcourse they can also be kept inlarger aquariums, and areconsidered reef safe.Normally $32.00THIS MONTHS SPECIAL $27.00

CORALS FOR THE BEGINNERKeeping (and growing) live coralrequires extremely good waterquality and correct and extensivelighting. Corals are generally muchmore sensitive to changes in waterconditions than fish and to keep a
reef tank you will need a goodbiological filter combined with a highquality protein skimmer and possiblymechanical filtration as well. Thereare a number of options for lighting. In the past metal halide lighting wasseen as the optimum for corals butsome new LED lighting nowavailable is fast becoming thestandard. If you wish to set up areef tank then please discuss the
correct filtration and lighting withour staff before proceding it willsave you money in the long run. There are some corals which will dowell in lower lighting (but still needhigh water quality) and we willdiscuss them here.
In generalterms coralscan bedivided into
two groups soft coralsand hardcorals. These
are distinguished by soft corals nothaving a hard coral skeleton toretract in to (although there are acouple of exceptions to that rule). Some soft corals are found indeeper water than hard corals andthus have a lower light requirement.
They sometimes require less flow ofwater. Examplesof these are thezoanthids, anencrusting coral, and corallimorphswhich are flat disclike corals whichcome in a range
of bright colours and oftenreproduce rapidly. Both of thesespecies are popular in sea horsetanks. Moving up the lightingrequirements, next is the beautifulDaisy Star coral (Clavularia spp). This is also an
encrusting typecoral which willspread over therocks, forming adense mat. It willtolerate a higherwater flow than the previous twoand is considered easy to maintain. Also popular is the Leather Coralfamily. This covers several types Lobophytum, Sarcophyton and
Sinularia amongst others. These arefleshy soft corals which can grow to
a large size overtime. Some likethe Sarcophytonhave long, finepolyps opening totiny flowers onthe ends and
resemble an anemone, so much sothat often clownfish will make their
home in them.Usually hard corals are consideredharder to keep, small polyp stonycorals (SPS) especially so. Acroporais an example of an SPS and isexceptionally hard to keep. Twohard coral species which do well andare suited topositioningnear, or on thebottom of, the
aquarium areCushion Coral(Cynarina spp) and Bubble Coral(Plerogyra spp). As with all corals,if a specimen is not opening anddoing well after at least a week ortwo, consider shifting it to a positionhigher or lower in the tank, withmore or less flow.

WANT TO BE AN EXPERTON CORAL?
Aquarium Corals Selection,Husbandry, and Natural History byEric H. Borneman has become thebible for coral enthusiasts. Whilstthere are some beautiful coral booksavailable, this is perhaps one of thefew which details
the captive careof corals and thecollection impactas well asidentification, classification andnatural location. It even providesthe correct pronunciation of eachgenus. Further to all of this, thebook then covers water chemistry
and coral husbandry and a goodsection on coral health recognizing, preventing and treatingdiseases. This hardcover book runs to 464pages and is filled with beautiful fullcolour photos and is a must have inthe library of every reef tankenthusiast. $99.00.
HETO LIGHT REFLECTORSWITH LED LIGHTING
Heto LED lights come in a smartsilver reflector and have two rows ofwhite lights one on either side of arow of blue lights. They have adouble switch which allows the lightsto be run in three ways:
o with all rows on,o white lights only,o or blue lights only.
They are supplied with a 12V lowvoltage transformer for safety andhave Australian approval ratings. In intensity they are comparable tomultiple fluorescents or T5 lightingand can be used on a freshwater ormarine tank. All but basic coralswould need two units the length ofthe tank. These LED lights are anentry level light and do not compare
with high output LEDs which rivalmetal halide lighting. As with all LEDlights, electricity running costs areless than most other lighting, thelights run very cool and the bulbshave an extremely long life.Three models are available:
60cm (2) 18Watt $93.5090cm (3) 28Watt $154.99120cm (4) 37Watt $193.50
