More importantly, it is time to eat wonderful food and enjoy the company of friends and family at this special time of year. This half term has seemed a very long one, with events providing lasting memories for all of our children. Even from behind my cardboard partition on Tuesday evening, the Christmas performance of ‘Lights, Camel, Action!’ was sensational, with every child enjoying being on stage and giving it their all. Emerging from my sauna-of-a-sound-booth at the end, it was clearly evident that the audience found it equally as enjoyable! It certainly made me exceptionally proud to be part of Buildwas Academy. Calendars have been made, cards have been written, chocolates eaten and presents given - this is a hectic time of year for everybody so please remember to savour those special moments with your family and friends over the next fortnight. Children and staff are all eager to take time to relax and rest and I hope you find the time to do so too. So without further ado and on behalf of all staff, governors and directors, please do have a wonderful Christmas and we will see you in the New Year. 3-2-1 get wrapping! Closing the Autumn Term

Dear Parents and Carers,

So the season of goodwill has finally arrived!

Festive regards,

Tom Plim

Lights Camel Action! What an unforgettable evening! A huge thank you to all of the parents who were able to come up to Priorslee Academy to see our show, there were over 110 people in the audience, and considering the children had not performed to an audience prior to real thing, they did a marvellous job.

We have thoroughly enjoyed rehearsing for our nativity production this year, and a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped.

I don’t think any of us will watch the Strictly Come Dancing final tomorrow in quite the same way as we would have this time last week!

Christmas dinner We had a fantastic turnout for Christmas Dinner this year, with over 50% of parents attending to enjoy Christmas dinner with the children.

A traditional Christmas dinner of roast turkey was complimented with some delicious puddings of cheesecake and Mrs Philpott’s Christmas concoction of a shortbread mince pie, decorated with sprigs of holly made out of icing!

Children and parents wereentertained by a Christmas soundtrack and pictures from the previous night’s performance that took place at Priorslee

Christmas Fair 2016

Our 2016 Christmas Fair took place on Friday 9th December in the school hall, raising almost £200. Whether it was the chocolate tombola, hamper raffle or the ‘barrow of booze’, the hall was crowded with people vying for position!

The Fair was also at the end of ‘enterprise week’, where children from Holly and Willow created items to sell at the fair. Willow baked gingerbread shapes, decorating them with icing and wrapping in cellophane raising £27, whilst Holly made Christmas tree decorations using card and thread raising £19. Many thanks to staff for manning the stalls and also to Mrs Nock who was a great help, running the hamper raffle!

pantomime seasonOur children ‘weren’t late for the ball’ and enjoyed trips to see Cinderella at Theatre Severn with their peers from Priorslee. This year’s panto was full of magic, mayhem, comedy, singing, dancing and special effects including a flying horse and carriage! The children and staff really did have a ball!

Children enjoyed an ice-cream during the interval and all had a thoroughly good time - here is a photo of the cast during the finale! We will be back next year, that’s for sure!

Holly were also very fortunate to be invited to a sneaky peek of this year’s Sixth Form Pantomime performance at William Brookes on 13th December. This year’s production was based on the story of Aladdin and was adapted for the stage by Antonia Shaw, daughter of Mrs Shaw in the school office!

Circus Skills

ks2 cross country

Whilst Willow were watching the pantomime at Theatre Severn, Mr Plim and Miss Simcock accompanied our Reception children to Priorslee to take part in a circus skills workshop. They tried plate spinning, scarf throwing, puppetry, stilts and many more fun circus activities!

“ Buildwas Academy went to cross country on 9th November and 9th December. In the Year 5/6 race, Isabelle came 7th and in the Year 3/4 race, Lucas finished in 6th!

All of our runners were breathless after finishing and so were Joel and Adam who competed as our only representatives in the Year 5/6 races - we were so proud of all of the children! Hopefully the event that was cancelled will be rearranged for next year!” By Joel Kirk

“Cross country was great and very difficult at the same time! Everyone did great, cross country is a competitive sport. Everyone did equally well and also tried their hardest AND did their best.”By Mia and Izzy

Poetry competition winners!

Fresh Air Fitness! Our new fitness equipment is now in position!

Following the holidays, the area will be re-landscaped and enclosed, ready for the children’s use once the field is usable again!

We are also in the process of applying for a grant to increase the number of equipment pieces. Watch this space!

We have some exciting news following the poetry competition through Young Writers.

Holly class used an animated presentation of ‘The Big Friendly Poet’ to start us off, based on the BFG as the class were reading the book at the time.

The good news is that 16 of the children from Holly who entered had their poems chosen! We also know that 13 children in Willow have also been chosen, but we don’t know their names just yet!

Please remember to send the permission slips back to Young Writers otherwise their poem will not be included in the publication!

Here is Ben’s entry who was one of our chosen poets!

Evil Castle

In Dreamland, I saw in the distance, An evil castle guarded with magic

crossbows, BFG and I quick as a flash shoot

our lasers, Back to our castle, the evil guy spies

on us, Banging and crashing destroying the evil

castle, We’ve won, I’m as excited as a leaf

blowing in the wind, No longer stands an evil castle, Just a pile of crumbling rocks.

Wishing you all a restful Christmas break!

Willow UpdateThis half term we looked at the Ice part of our Fire and Ice topic. Our WOW starter included coming into class to find it had snowed overnight and was absolutely freezing. So cold that we had to keep our coats on all morning. There was a Polar region role play, snow and ice everywhere and ‘Jack Frost’ had even left his ski clothes behind. We have looked for the letters of our name in the frozen pond. We have challenged ourselves to build igloos, measure our heights with ice bricks and explored finding one more and one less. We have also read and written non-chronological reports on penguins, lemmings and other Arctic animals.

Pictured below are our bears for Children in Need!

Remember, the dance festival at William Brookes is in the third week back!

Next half term, all children will be receiving lessons relating to the NSPCC’s Underwear Rule campaign.

The NSPCC’s Underwear Rule campaign helps keep children safe from abuse. It takes a potentially tricky subject and gives adults the tools to talk about it in an engaging and age-appropriate way.

The central message of PANTS (which acts like a green cross code for staying safe from abuse) is:

There will be a letter and a leaflet sent home after half term with more information but in the meantime, have a look at the NSPCC’s website https://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping-children-safe/underwear-rule/ which has more information about the Underwear Rule campaign.

PANTS!

Stars of the Week

4th November Charlotte Nock - Charlotte has done some super work, completing mastery number

tasks independently. Jack Pooler - Jack has made a great start to his time at Buildwas. He has fitted into

Holly class really well and is working hard!

11th November Daniel Kitson - Daniel is making super progress with his phonics. He worked really

hard to segment words when working in a small group, finding the phonemes he needed on the phoneme strip.

Joel Kirk - Fantastic effort at cross country, Joel was the only boy from Buildwas in his race and had to run 2 laps. He really persevered and kept going. Well done!

18th November Charlie Smith - Charlie is showing a mature attitude to his work. He has made some

very sensible choices about where to sit and tried hard to produce his best work! Oliver Plimmer - For his kindness to others, making another child feel special through

complimenting her on her reading.

25th November Naomi Smith - Trying her very best in all aspects of school.

Coby Gray - Coby has worked consistently hard in dance at William Brookes. He knows all the moves and is always in time!

2nd December Morgan Harvey - Morgan has had a great first week at Buildwas. He has shown a really

mature attitude towards his work, and tried his best all week! Oliver Jones - Oliver showed a very mature attitude during the pantomime, engaging

positively with the performance. A real step forward Oliver!

9th December Taylor Downing - Taylor has made super progress in his phonics this week and is

beginning to sound out his words. He can find the sound on the phoneme strip too. Lacey Cannon-Boynton - Lacey has stepped up into a different part in the school play at

short notice. She has given up some of her own time to learn a dance!

Pupils of the Term Oliver Plimmer - Willow

forest school

It was such a lovely afternoon as a whole-school being outside enjoying a Welly Wednesday together, using the outdoors to learn. Children worked together to make bird-feeders using polystyrene cups, lard, mealworms and bird seed. You can see them hanging on branches around the school site. I’m sure the children will agree that the best part was a cup of hot chocolate to warm the cockles whilst sitting together before home-time! Many thanks to Mrs White for organising!

Anders Celsius Celsius was born November 27th 1701. He lived in a small town called Uppsala in Sweden. Then he went to University. When he graduated from university he

became a professor. After that he travelled around the world. Then he

visited Lapland. Later he went to the observatory. Then he did an experiment because he wanted to do a science project.

Celsius put mercury in the glass tube then he put it in the hot water then cold water then he made a thermometer. He was so happy with his life time work

inventing the thermometer.

By Lucas (Holly)

Holly class have been hard at work looking at biographical writing and in-turn, learning about the life of Anders Celsius who invented the thermometer and from whom we get the name of one of the units we use to measure temperature.

The children’s writing can be found on the Holly class page on the website:

http://www.buildwasacademy.com/curriculum-and-class-pages/holly-ks2/

In the meantime, have a look at Lucas’ finished biography, explaining the life of Anders Celsius.

Could we politely remind parents to be considerate towards other drivers and residents when parking for drop-off and pick-up at the rear of school. Please keep the disabled bay and bus-stop space clear and we would advise using the designated safe parking zones laid out in the Parking Charter, introduced in Spring 2015.

Duolingo is a simply FANTASTIC free app for learning any language. In fact, it's so good, it has won Apple's app of the year. It works with your microphone on your phone or tablet, working through various language units in a quiz style - picking up on your areas of strength and weakness.

Have a very Merry Christmas…

Writing of the Term - Liam Kirkpatrick

I open my eyes and I find myself in the North Pole. The beans are ready and the smell of chocolate powder swirls in the night air like the Northern lights above. I can see a humongous number of stars in the sky. I can hear the snowflakes echoing and drumming off

the mountains. The elves are singing a nice quiet song. I feel slippy ice underneath my feet…
