This month’s meeting will include the election of offic-

ers and a potluck (bring a dish to share.) We will be

looking for a new place to meet for 2012, since the

LDJ Center has again changed their hours. They are

now going to open at 2:00 pm, which will be entirely

too late for our meetings. We will be brainstorming

for a new meeting place for 2012. I’m really sorry

they have continued to change their opening hours to

a time which is inconvenient for our group. We modi-

fied our meeting time with their first change, but the

second change is unacceptable. We will use the pro-

gram time to finish up projects from this year and

past years, we will also conduct a brainstorming ses-

sion for meeting places and possible program ideas for

next year.. Remember to bring a potluck dish and

something to drink, and your unfinished baskets.

Twill Painted Paper Basket October 15, 2011

Sky Peaks Community Room

9:30 am—3:00 pm

Instructor: Karen Olson

We are going to weave a twill patterned painted paper basket to hold cocktail size nap-

kins. The paper will be pre-painted and cut, so we can spend our time weaving and deco-

rating the rim with waxed linen, and buttons and/or beads. I will have pre-cut strips of

painted paper to use for your baskets, if you have special color preferences, please let

me know so I can paint some up for you. You will need to bring scissors, large tapestry

needle, and small copper clips for holding the rim on. The class fee is $15 for members

and $20 for non-members, with a $10 materials fee. If you have any questions please

contact Karen Olson at 852-5401 or email [email protected]. Don’t forget your lunch.

During the Artist Co-op Reception for our September Show, we presented

Wally Cuchine with the 2004 Collaborative Raffle display. It will be added to

his collection of over 1500 art pieces made by Nevada artists. Wally’s collec-

tion is housed in two buildings in Eureka, Nevada. Pictured above is the dis-

play case along with some of the artists whose works appear in the collection:

(left to right) Carol Thomas, Mary Lee Fulkerson, Wally Cuchine, Cherlyn

Bennett, Linda Havens, Billie Walker and Betty Hulse (kneeling in front.)

The display includes small baskets made by 24

artists and a hand carved doll.

Originally this was raffled off during the 2004

regional conference held in Reno. The winner

was a school teacher from Santa Rosa. She used

the display as a teaching aid for her fourth grade

class. Her husband and daughter re-gifted the

display back to the guild after she passed away.

We are so happy to have found a home for the

collaborative in Wally’s art collection. The guild

is planning a trip to Eureka in the spring to see

the collection.

COLORS OF NATURE

GBB Show at the Artist’s Co-Op

- Submitted by Margaret Marshall

The opening reception for GBB's COLORS OF NATURE was outstand-

ing. A great turn-out and, at times, standing room only. One had to wait in

line to make a purchase!!!

Karen Olsen presented Wally Cuchine with GBB's Doll/Baskets display,

along with pictures and a catalogue regarding the display, for his muse-

um. Wally is a very congenial man, who loves Nevada made art. Even his

kitchen is a gallery! (There are plans in the works for GBB to visit his muse-

um sometime in 2012.)

A very good participation by GBB members filled the back gallery with

outstanding art work. If you didn't get that one great piece finished for the

opening, you can still put it in the Co-Op show. All art work must have a

HANG TAG and YOU MUST ADD THE INFORMATION TO THE INVEN-

TORY ON FILE AT THE CO-OP. Without these, if it sells, you won't get

paid. Reminder that pick up is scheduled for September 30th between 11 and

4 p.m. Please try to be early as there will be another show going up that day

and the next. If you are not available for pick up or have a question, please

contact Cheryln or Margaret.

GBB Elections We need you!

Elections for 2012 GBB Board and Guild Officers will be held at the October 6th meeting. GBB is an

all volunteer organization and can only function with member involvement. We still need volunteers for

the positions below. Please email ([email protected]) or call me as soon as possible to discuss and

volunteer. Meg Price - home 849-2316; cell 722-6685.

TREASURER: Time commitment is only a few hours a month. Collect monies, pay board ap-

proved bills, maintain records, and compile reports.

In addition, the following committee chairs need to be filled: VICE PRESIDENT/

PROGRAM CHAIR: Time commitment varies, more in preparation for program calendar and

during nominations. The position fills in for the President when absent, chairs the nominating committee and the Program Committee for the monthly meetings.

PUBLICITY: Submit information to newspaper on GBB meetings and activities, exhibits,

shows, etc. Time is minimal.

SPECIAL WORKSHOPS: Special workshops are those in which GBB has contracted with

an outside teacher to come to Reno to teach a specific class or classes. These are often pro-fessional teachers and involve transportation fees as well as teacher and materials fees and are scheduled up to 1-2 years in advance. Need to confirm interest, confirm dates with teach-er, obtain location, work with teacher on costs/feeds, conduct sign ups, collect and track mon-ey submitted.

Attention all you creative artists and teachers: Another basket making year is on the horizon 2012. Wow ! Where does the time go?

The Third Thursday and Third Saturday Classes for 2012 are wide open. Not to men-

tion our special Two-Day Workshops.

Do you have a project you would like to teach?

Do you have a technique you would like to learn?

Please contact someone on the committee and let’s make 2012 another great year for

classes.

Thanks, Carol Thomas, Joan O’Brien and Sandy Zoerner

HOLIDAY SALE AT CLASSIC RESIDENCE

The annual one day Holiday Sale at Classic Residence (3201 Plumas) is scheduled for

November 15th from 9:30 to 3 p.m. This year GBB has reserved two tables for our mem-

bers to sell artwork. Members may either stay all or part of the day, or arrange to drop off

their art work prior to the sale. We do ask that all work have a hangtag and a detailed in-

ventory. For your records, duplicate receipts will be given for each purchase. The resi-

dence is not asking for a commission on sales. Because this is an in-house event for the

senior residents, it is an opportunity to display baskets, gourds, quilts, jewelry and holiday

decorations. (Tia's gourd pins were a good seller some years ago.) There will be more

information in the next newsletter. If you are interested in participating, please call or e-

mail Margaret Marshall. 825-4397
