Cara Gulati: So You Want To Make An Art Quilt Cara Gulati has spent her life around fabric. She has sold fabric and clothes, designed them both and ended up with her own company as a designer and manufacturer of children's wear. Doodle Press is Cara's publishing company. She designs fun and artistic quilts that are unique. Her patterns and book can be found in quilt stores around the world and on her web site at www.doodlepress.com

Fiber art and quilting in particular grabbed her heart and led her to things of a flatter nature. Cara makes very large art quilts and is currently working on a series called 3-D Explosion. She has written a book and teaches workshops on this design and sewing technique..

One quilt in the series, "3-D Party Explosion" won Viewer's Choice at the Houston International Quilt Festival in 2003.

After getting tired of throwing large quilts around to actually quilting them on a mid-arm machine, Cara purchased an A-1 Quilting Machine. She began learning the ways of a long arm machine where the machine is on roller coaster wheels and the quilt is mounted on to rollers on a table. She learned to be the "Pen" while quilting instead of the "Paper". She liked it so much that she accepted the sales rep position for the state of California

Her teaching career has taken her to Abu Dhabi in the UAE as well as Australia. She has exhibited her work internationally. She has appeared on Simple Quilts and Kaye's Quilting Friends. ditching school. Not that I ever did because I didn’t …Okay, I did and that’s how I felt. My accountant may not understand my addiction; but fortunately my husband pretends not to know or care about my compulsive behavior. He knows when I come home from visiting my “dealer”, I am sneaking in with at lease five fat quarters and three yards of fabric in that plain brown bag. But let’s be honest; he is saving a fortune by pretending I don’t have a problem. Imagine what six weeks in rehab would cost him. And we all know it’s incurable. I’d just relapse the first time I walked into a fabric store and touched a bolt of beautiful smooth cotton shimmering with color. The wonderful thing about being addicted to fabric and quilting is that while I have to feed my addiction with regular visits to fabric shops, I don’t have to worry about getting “busted” on my way to the car for possession of a controlled substance. I don’t have to spend my nights standing on a street corner in skimpy clothing to support my “habit.” And finally, I won’t end up at some court ordered rehab sitting next to Charlie Sheen. I am such a “WINNER!”

Wow! Did we have a fabulous quilt show this year with wonderful quilts, terrific vendors, and wonderful classes. This is the year we shall all remember, as “The Show” that was featured on Huell Howser’s California’s Gold. I want to thank all the Show Board members who worked many long hours to organize and produce our show. Year after year they carry the show responsibility. They worry and fret and fight over every penny we spend so that we can make a sizable profit. We could not have quality programs at our Guild meetings year after year without these dedicated people giving us great Shows. A special “thank you” to Heidi St. Royal, Show Chair and Sharon Bishop, Co- Show Chair for a truly memorable Quilt Show. Last month Julie Silber gave us a wonderful presentation titled, ‘The Amish and Their Quilts.” I know we all enjoyed viewing her slides that contrasted the quilts being produced by the Amish with those being produced by quilters in outside communities during the same time periods and over a span of almost two hundred years. It was a very interesting presentation and we were so happy to have Julie with us. Quilting Junkie Okay, I admit it. I am an addict. It is humiliating but it’s the shameful truth.

Love, Heidi P.S. A big thanks to Carolyn Hodapp, for her gorgeous western quilt made of scraps from our opportunity quilt, what a talented gal! Lucky person to win out at our silent auction!

To all my quilt buddies! Another big thank you for all your support, cards, calls, hugs, etc., during my bout with brain surgery. I’m so happy to say that there is no brain tumor! The final diagnosis is a viral brain infection, unknown cause! Leave it to me! But your kindness shall never be forgotten, what friends, what a guild! Love you, Heidi

Loving Hands

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 2012 QUILT SHOW? Are you ready to start quilting your entry for next year’s show? Have you considered “green” batting?

Quilters Dream batting – Dream Green, is truly a green batting made 100% made from recycled plastic bottles.

It is considered the next generation of polyester because of plastic bottle reuse. This soft mid loft polyester

will keep 10 bottles from going to the landfill for each pound of batting. Except for the green color to the

batting it’s indistinguishable in quality, function and drape from virgin polyester batting. It can be machine

washed and dried with little or no shrinkage. Shrinkage is caused by the temperature of washing water and if you dry your

quilt in the dryer. Stitch line distance is up to 10” apart. This batting can be tied or quilted by hand or machine. Loft is “select

loft” which is considered mid-loft. Another item to consider is if you have white or light colors in your quilt, Dream Green will

“shadow” not bleed the green color through the lighter fabrics.

Glendale Quilt Guild Executive Board Meeting At Esther Norbut’s Home March 3, 2011 Present: Barbara Gibson, Frances Brannon, Sharon Bishop, Margie Emmons, Corinne Gurney, Karen Waller, Nan Maples, Mary Ann Kroening, Heidi St. Royal, and Esther Norbut..

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President Barbara Gibson. She thanked Esther Norbut for hosting our meeting again. The minutes of the last board meeting were reviewed. A correction regarding the advertising in the newsletter was explained by Nan Maples. The maximum space to be devoted to advertising is ¼ page, the prices are $9 for business card size (1/8 page), and $15 if they elect to take the entire ¼ page, with all ads to be cleared through Publicity and the ads, quilt-related, and camera ready would be sent to the Newsletter Editor. With these corrections, motion was made, seconded and the minutes were approved.

Treasurer Margie Emmons provided copies of the February treasurer’s report and budget and reviewed it with the Board. There was one check that bounced with the reason given as ‘account closed’. Since this was for a quilt entry, Nan Maples explained that she e-mailed her and advised her she needed to pay $35 in cash or cashiers’ check at the time she brings her quilt for show entry. Her quilt will not be entered in the show without this. The Treasurer reported that the Huell Howser quilt cost totaled $330, when all things were factored in. The credit card subject was discussed, and it was confirmed that credit cards will be accepted at the Country Store this year, but were not for the vendors this year. This subject was tabled and will be brought up at a later date for a ruling.

It was proposed and discussed that the drawing for the Opportunity Quilt be changed to the end of the year, giving the membership more time to sell tickets, thereby relieving the requirement that the quilt be themed to the Quilt Show and removing it from the Quilt Show budget. It was moved that this subject be tabled and brought up again at the May meeting. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.

Old business: The April 7 meeting will be at Mary Ann Kroening’s home. Fat quarters for March will be greens, April pastel colors, and May will be flowers.

Vice President Mary Ann Kroening reported that 4 boxes of donations have been sent to Afghanistan so far. There will be one more shipment in April. Needed this month: flannel and needles. A new target will be sometime in September for another drive to get more donations.

President Gibson acknowledged Newsletter Editor Karen Waller for the beautiful job she did once again on the newsletter for this month.

President Gibson said that unless members sign up for the April workshop at the Antelope Valley Quilt Guild, it is possible that our portion will have to be cancelled. It was discussed that perhaps we are obligated for our portion of the workshop charge, but the answer would be in the contract (in the hands of the Program Chair). Contact will be made to resolve this before the March Guild meeting. The subject of members unable to fulfill their Quilt Show obligation mandated by the guild membership was brought up by Treasurer Emmons. It had been moved and approved that the birth year be added to the membership signup form, but the forms were already printed. Although Membership Chair Barbara Stuart attempted to gather these dates, to relieve certain members from their 2 hour obligation due to age, she was not able to get them all. It was brought out that there are all types of

jobs available at the Show, standing, walking and sitting, so there is something available to all, so age should not be an exemption. Motion was made and seconded to instruct the Membership Chair to draft revisions to the membership form and present them to the April Board to include requirements for good standing and renewal, year of birth and any other items the Membership Chair believes to be relevant. The motion carried unanimously. Quilt Show Chair Heidi St. Royal announced that Huell Howser called and confirmed that he will be at the Quilt Show with his film crew at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. An autographed cookbook will be presented to Huell, and arrangements for crowd control by the hotel security have been made. Arrangements for publicity for the show are being handled by Brandi Nalley. Many niceties for attendees, such as dual cashier stands, gifts for those first in line, etc. were enumerated. Decorations, Western related, are solicited. Hotel rooms are up from last year. Opportunity tickets: If you pay at the show, it is your responsibility to make sure your name is taken off the list. The Show program is to be printed next week. An insert in the program about Huell Howser was presented to the Board and approved. Saturday Night Sampler has 12 teachers, and 36 signups already. All ribbons and awards have been sponsored, there were 6 vendors on the waiting list. One class has already closed (actually over the number). Seniors are encouraged to volunteer for the ‘sit down fun’ jobs, lending us their experience. Corresponding Secretary Sharon Bishop sent cards to Ivy Fiske, our first President, to Heidi for her good report results, and to Betty Fisher for the loss of her husband. Barbara Gibson wrote a letter to Road to California regarding the inability to put out Quilt Show flyers and they answered that they considered the table to be a Safety concern as flyers fell on the floor. They said that next year they would consider getting someone once an hour to police the table. Nan Maples, Parliamentarian, reported that the Nominating Committee was in a unique position. Quite a few people will not be continuing in their present position, due to retirement, accepting other positions, etc. Nominations from the floor will be asked for these positions at the next meeting. The Parliamentarian suggested that this year (only) those who cannot get their $10 in for Opportunity Quilt tickets that they can donate $10 after the Show to cover their obligation set up with the current Bylaws. Susan Edwards sent a note that she will bring the survey to the next meeting. She suggested that we hang a quilt made from a book be hung behind the library table, saying what book it came from. Philanthropy sent a note suggested we donate $500 to the Glendale Public Library to purchase quilt related books, and $300 or more to the National Quilt Museum in Paducah. This will be brought to the membership in March. A discussion was held regarding having the New Member tea at an earlier date, with contacts to be made quickly to set a date, a place and responsibilities.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted, Frances Brannon

Vice President Mary Ann Kroening said she was selling tickets for the two nights at the Marriott, and collecting yarn, thread, etc. for the boxes sent to military personnel in Afghanistan who are teaching sewing for the babies. We sent boxes last month, will this month and one more month. At the present time, they need yarn and flannel.

Pat Grim of Loving Hands cancelled this month’s meeting, but will be back in operation next month.

Heidi St. Royal, Quilt Show Chairman Heidi St. Royal said the reason she was smiling was an exciting announcement – Huell Howser will be opening our 32nd quilt show on Friday, March 18 at 11:00 a.m. He will be there with his full staff, filming the show. She thanked everyone for their endeavors and volunteering to get this show on the road. Our founder, Carol Andrews, will give the history of our Guild to Huell. She called for another effort to fill in the need for additional volunteer times and pointed them toward Lettie Williams, at the side of the room. She invited the ‘Golden Girls’ to come in pioneer style. She asked for quilts in the main foyer, from the Master Quilters. We need 20 quilts which will be hung overhead. She said there was still time to get the Auction Quilts in for the show, and the wearables need to be delivered on Wednesday. There is still some room in some of the classes. We have almost filled in our quota for hotel rooms – these are $105 a night and include admission for our parties. We have 12 teachers in the Saturday Night Sampler. What to wear? Jeans, demins, anything in that department. There are still all sizes in the shirts and and T-shirts and tote bags available, also. She thanked Nan Maples of Nestle for printing the flyers overnight featuring Huell Howser’s appearance at the Show. President Gibson pointed out the members who were handling the various jobs for the show around the room, and announced that one class at the show is already closed, and volunteers were needed – saying that if you needed a sit-down job, just let them know. Thee were 42 block of the month to be won by 3 people . The next block of the month is St. Patrick’s Day themed.

Librarian Susan Edwards passed out copies of the survey made regarding the books preferred for the Guild library

Pat Grim displayed another quilt that Loving Hands has finished. This month 27 finished quilts and 23 quilt tops were turned in. There were tops and backing available if you wanted to add the batting and quilt the quilt.

Lettie Williams thanked everyone who volunteered for the show. If you work a second 2 hour stint, you can get $10 off a class. As Philanthropy Chair, she presented to the membership a proposal for two donations - $500 to the Glendale Library for the purchase of quilting books and $300 to the National Quilt Museum of the United States at Paducah, KY. Both libraries have been caught in the financial squeeze. On motion made, seconded and voted unanimously, these two donations were approved by the membership.

Membership Chair Barbara Stuart announced there were 129 attendees present, with 2 new members joining at this meeting and 8 guests. . Cookies, fabric and patterns were among the many items included in the drawing sacks won by the members. She reminded everyone to get their passports filled for the basket drawing.

The drawing for two nights at the Marriott was won by Charlotte Rose. Congratulations!

The program for the evening was Julie Silber, who presented a very interesting program on the Amish and their Quilts, giving us an inside look at both the Amish and the different styles of quilts they present. The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Frances
