Elmwood Community Centre Kitchen Renovation Project

Project Synopsis: The Elmwood Community Centre was first constructed in 1967. In 1992, a major expansion increased the size and modernized the building, and allowed for it to become fully accessible. Despite these improvements, the kitchen itself has not been renovated or improved since 1967.

Among the challenges of current kitchen are: a. Lack of a suitable food preparation areab. Movement is congested around dishwasher and stoves.c. Clean up / Dishwashing area and prep. area is in the same locationd. There are not enough burners on original oven in the kitchen.e. Kitchen workers use sink in accessible washroom next to the kitchen to wash handsf. Old chest freezer is located in the furnace room.g. Dishwasher and stove work, but are old and getting replacement parts is difficulth. There is no storage in smaller room adjacent to main kitchen roomi. Coolers are not close to prep areas.j. Kitchen noise seeps into dining areak. Original cupboards and countertops are dated and not suited for use and storage

With a new design, among the improvements we are hoping to achieve are: a. Large prep. island in main kitchen, new cupboards and countertopsb. Dishwasher station and dish storage in smaller roomc. Coolers and Freezer will be close to prep and cooking area.d. Improved new and energy efficient appliances, lighting and ventilatione. Improved people/ food/dishes flow pattern and ergonomically correct work areasf. Better sound proofing of kitchen areag. Worker hand wash and eyewash station in smaller roomh. Improved fire suppression

Financial Update: Original estimates from a building consultant indicated that our kitchen renovation project would likely cost approximately $80 000.00. We estimated that an addition $30 000.00 would be needed to replace appliances, dish and serving carts, coffee makers, and cookware.

Currently we have achieved the following financial commitments:

$30 000.00 Community Well-Being Grant 10 000.00 Commitment from Brockton 10 000.00 Commitment from West Grey 5 000.00 Grant from Trillium Insurance

25 000.00 Money raised by Chamber of Commerce / Canada 150 Committee $80 000.00

A new dishwasher ($10 000.00), new serving carts and coffee makers have already been purchased. The Chamber will be continuing to raise funds for additional improvements as required. The Community

Centre Board is also confident that additional sources of funding will come forward to assist with sundry items for our kitchen. Next Steps: Last week, West Grey Council granted approval for the Community Centre Board to move ahead with the project, with the understanding that the project would be managed through Municipality of Brockton.

At this time, I am asking for approval from Brockton Council for the Community Centre Board to proceed with our renovation project and to initiate a “Request for Proposal” process, through the Municipality of Brockton and with support of Brockton staff.
