That afternoon, the stewardship committee met to add up the pledges. The committee was quite surprised when they opened Mabel’s pledge. Mabel was an elderly member of the congregation who everyone knew struggled just to make ends meet. And yet, Mabel had made a most generous pledge for the coming year, a pledge much larger than what the committee thought was appropriate for Mabel. They didn’t want to hurt Mabel’s feelings, but they also didn’t want her to give more than she was able to truly afford. The committee shared their concerns with the pastor and it was decided that the pastor and the chair of the stewardship committee would go and visit Mabel. “Mabel,” her pastor began. “We have an unusual request. As the stewardship committee was reviewing your pledge for the coming year, they noticed just how generous your pledge was and, knowing that finances are tight, they are concerned that you have pledged more than you are able. And, so, we are here today to ask you to consider lowering your pledge.” Mabel’s face dropped as she listened to the pastor’s request. For a long time, they sat in silence around Mabel’s kitchen table, waiting for her reply. Finally, Mabel raised her face a little and then, with a quiver in her voice, she asked, “Pastor, do you and the rest of the congregation really want to take away my biggest joy?” Needless to say, Mabel’s pledge remained the same and the pastor and the chair of the congregation went back to the stewardship committee and shared with them the lesson Mabel had taught them that day around her kitchen table about what true Christian stewardship really means. The truth is that there is extreme joy in giving! True Christian stewardship is about helping Christ’s disciples know and experience the joy that comes from generously sharing our time, talents, treasure, and touch, all in response to what God has first done for us. True Christian stewardship is not just about fundraising. It is about faith raising! When we grow as stewards of all that God has given to us, our faith in God increases! And, when our faith in God increases, our joy increases! Who among us wouldn’t want to have our joy increased? St. Paul puts it this way in his letter to the Christians living in Corinth – “The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:6-8). Over the next couple of weeks you are going to be asked once again to prayerfully consider what you will give in 2011 in response to God’s goodness and grace. You will be asked to once again give a portion of your time, your talents, your treasure, and your touch. And, on Commitment Weekend, November 13/14, you will be asked to bring your pledges forward during worship, a visible symbol of your response to Christ’s love for you. Yes, our congregation needs you to give generously if we are to continue to increase the mission and ministry we do in and through this place. But, even more so, each of us as disciples of Jesus need ourselves to give generously if we are to continue to increase both our faith and our joy! As we make our pledges for the coming year, may each of us, like Mabel, know and experience the true joy of giving! In Christ

ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH

The story is shared of a congregation that had its annual fall stewardship campaign. Letters were sent. Meals were shared. Temple talks were given. On Commitment Sunday, each member of the congregation carried his or her pledge card to the front of the church and placed it on the altar, a visible symbol of their response to Christ’s love for them.

True

Christian stewardship is about helping Christ’s disciples know and experience the joy that comes from generously sharing our time, talents, treasure, and touch, all in response to what God has first done for us.

It Is TRUE – Stewardship Is Not “Fund” Raising; It Is FAITH Raising BUT Mission Takes Money and Money Encourages Mission How extravagantly generous are you willing to be? How extravagantly generous do you believe St. John’s ought to be? I can imagine some different responses to that idea of being “extravagantly generous.”

Extravagantly generous? The economy stinks. My net worth has shrunk. I don’t have discretionary income. I can’t pay all my bills. I am looking for work. You are asking me to be extravagantly generous? You’ve got to be kidding!

Virtually everyone has less financially than a couple of years ago; some are frightened, scared and worried. I understand that – however one thing that Biblically

The Eagle NEWSLETTER October 27, 2010

and faithfully I have learned over the years is this: Generosity has much more to do with a person’s heart and values than what is in his or her bank account.

St. Paul wrote the first nine chapters of II Corinthians from Macedonia. The Macedonians were dirt poor. They lived in a barren land with few opportunities for jobs, trade or industry in what is now northern Greece. Part of his writing: The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. [II Corinthians 9:6]

What might extravagant generosity mean? Consider a few things: • God is extravagantly generous. God did not create

a purely functional universe. We have colors and vibrancy that show a much greater generosity by our Creator than simply a black and white universe. And the greatest example of God’s generosity is in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus our Savior. God is hoping we will be extravagantly generous in giving of our time, talents, treasures and touch as Jesus has been with us.

• When I keep what I am at liberty to give, part of me dies. When I give what culture says I am entitled to keep, then that is freeing. Being extravagantly generous is more about what I am keeping than what I am giving away. Our brother in faith – Martin Luther – once said: There are three conversions necessary in the Christian life: the conversion of the heart, the mind and the purse. The third is the most difficult.

• Every decision involving money for a disciple of Jesus is spiritual before it is financial. We use money; we do not serve money. We own without treasuring; we possess without being possessed. Money is like a god – it offers security, it can induce guilt, give freedom and power and it entices us. When we let go of money we let go of part of ourselves and part of our security. This is scary but it is precisely why we need to do it. Giving to God and to others frees us from the tyranny of money – and that is one reason why I encourage percentage giving. Most Americans give less than 2.4% of what they earn to the Lord’s work. Think of all the transformation that could take place if we moved toward tithing by 1% at a time.

• Ultimately how we handle our money and our life hinges on where we place our trust. We do not make commitments to a budget – we make commitments to our Lord and by doing that to the mission and ministry of St. John’s. Your gifts of money make mission happen – it means that if you look at the bulletin when you come to worship this weekend you will see a whole host of ways in which the Gospel of Jesus Christ is being shared. Like a pebble thrown into a pond, the ripples extend outward. That is exactly what your gifts do – they extend outward and in so doing others are given an embrace of God’s grace.

NOV.14TH THANKSGIVING MEALAll are invited to share in our congregation’s Thanksgiving Meal following our 10:30 combined worship on November 14. As we give thanks to God for all God’s blessings and share our commitments for the mission and ministry of St. John’s in 2011 we celebrate the gift of connecting with Christ and with each other in this special meal for the congregation. The meal catered by Nelson’s Catering, is a gift from members who wish to say thank-you to God and to St. John’s.

New Disciples’ ClassAnyone interested in becoming a member of St. John’s is invited to our next New Disciples’ class on Sunday, November 7 from 12:00 noon – 5:00 p.m. The afternoon begins with lunch with St. John’s congregation council members and staff, followed by conversation with the pastors about what it means to be a Lutheran Christian in the world and how we live out our lives as Jesus’ disciples here at St. John’s. Childcare will be provided. New Disciples will be received into the congregation during worship the weekend of November 13/14. If interested in attending, please let one of the pastors know.

Vision for Ministry Rollout Sessions These “rollout” sessions are times when the proposed Vision for Ministry for St. John’s for these next few years will be shared – or literally – “rolled out.” The Vision for Ministry is the game plan for the congregation and in these times you will be offered the opportunity to share, discuss and respond to this game plan. The Visioning Task Force made up of 14 members of St. John’s and the Congregation Council have worked hard to develop this plan to help and enable the mission and ministry of St. John’s to continue in a strong and effective way.

There are two more times that are available if you have not participated yet: Thursday, November 4 – 7 p.m. in the Adult Meeting RoomSunday, November 7 – 9:15 a.m. in the Adult Meeting RoomThe Visioning Task Force was charged to focus on three priorities: Pastoral Transition, Debt Management and Stewardship Growth. The brochure sent to your home gives you an Executive Summary – but your presence is important at one of the rollout sessions. Being

Connected with Christ, Connected with each other and Connected with the world is our focus and theme. Come and be connected!

Commitment Weekend – November 13 & 14 At all of our worship services on November 13 & 14 we will have a time during each worship to present and dedicate to God our commitments for mission and ministry for 2011 here at St. John’s. There are two commitments you are being asked to present to God that weekend. All of these items will be mailed on November 1 to arrive at your address.

Financial Commitment Card All members of St. John’s are asked to fill out and bring to worship their financial commitment card for 2011. On the Financial Commitment Card please note that all members are asked to make a commitment to the General Operating Fund and a commitment to the Building Fund. Our Growing in Grace Capital Campaign will be completed in May 2011 and in order to fulfill our mortgage responsibilities it will be essential to continue strong and faithful giving. If you made a commitment to Growing in Grace please consider continuing an annual commitment from June 2011 on. If you did not make a commitment to Growing in Grace your commitment from January 2011 will help to reduce our debt obligation.

Sharing our Time, Talent & Touch This is a new response form we ask all members to fill out so that we have updated information about areas of talent and skill sets that will assist in the mission and ministry of St. John’s. This is a substantial form that identifies all the varieties and many opportunities for ministry at St. John’s. Our gifts of time and talent and touch – being connected with others – are vital and essential for the strength of our mission and ministry. Please be prepared to share those gifts and bring your form to worship on Commitment Weekend. Your prayer-filled response and your joyful participation is anticipated as well as needed. Thank you for your partnership in the mission and ministry of St. John’s!

Combined 10:30 Worship Service November 14th We join together in a combined 10:30 worship service on November 14. To be held in the Parish Life Center

this service will feature very special music provided by the St. John’s Orchestra, Chancel Choir, Praise Band and Children’s Choir. The worship service is built on a Thanksgiving theme and will feature such strong and dynamic hymns such as “Now Thank We All Our God” and “Come, You Thankful People, Come.” A sung Call to Worship will begin our time and the service will also have a Children’s Message along with Holy Communion.

The space of the Parish Life Center provides us with adequate room. At our Rally Day Combined Service we had over 450+ attending. We look forward to this special Thanksgiving Combined Service on Commitment Weekend to have at least that many and more!

This service will be followed by the special Thanksgiving Meal for all members and friends – but please! Respond by filling out the form in this newsletter or the reservation form in the weekend worship bulletins. The meal is being catered by Nelson’s Catering and we must have numbers by November 7. Thank you!

Trunk or Treat Participants Needed! On Sunday, November 7th, we will be having a “Trunk-or-Treat” and Fall Festival event for our Spark and Flame youth groups. If you would like to participate in Trunk-or-Treat, bring candy, park your car in the church parking lot after the 10:30 services, and allow for the church youth to “trick-or-treat” out of your trunk. This is a great opportunity for church members to spend time with youth of the church that they might not ordinarily see. If you plan to participate, contact Christie at [email protected], or by calling the church at 793-3933. Bring your candy on November 7th, and let’s have a Trunk-or-Treat party!

Deborah CircleDeborah Circle will meet at the MCL Cafeteria on Tuesday, November 2nd at 11:30 a.m. Program: Gay Stinnete will be the guest speaker with a presentation on REIKI. For information please call LaJaunti Hoffmeister at 546-6587.

Coffee Price Increase Thank you so much for your strong support of Fair Trade coffee, tea and chocolate! As you may know, the Global Missions committee of St. John’s sells these items not as a fund raiser, but as a mission project to help farmers in developing countries to receive a fair price for their products, thus enabling them to properly care for their families. Therefore, all products are sold at cost; there is no mark-up by St. John’s. You may have heard that coffee prices have increased sharply in recent months, and Equal Exchange, our supplier, has also had to increase their prices. Any coffee ordered after October 11, 2010 will cost $ 0.75 more per bag for 12oz. bags and $ 1.00 more per 1 LB. bag. We ask for your understanding, and we hope that you will continue to support Fair Trade! The Global Missions Committee

Foods Resource Bank (FRB) NewsA great big “Thank You” to all the kids who participated

in the Bike-a-Thon on October 3 which raised the tremendous amount of $708.00 for Foods

Resource Bank! What a wonderful job! All our fund raisers plus some outreach and budgeted funds have totaled $5,103.00 for FRB in 2010. Our growing project, named “Share the Harvest,”

has grown by leaps and bounds. Members of 13 churches in Hancock County, including Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage, have set

aside a total of 43 acres for FRB this year, quite an increase from only 10 acres just 2 years ago! This was evidenced by the many people who took part in the harvest festival on October 17. St. John’s participated with four mini vans full of our disciples! All had a good time riding in the huge combine and

helping to harvest corn, taking hay rack rides, playing games, and talking with two farmers

from the Gambia in Africa, who are taking part in

Sunday, November 21st –Youth Group Thanksgiving Party. Food, fun, and Thanksgiving themed games from 6:00-8:00 p.m.!

Sunday School Holiday Happenings• Sunday, Nov. 21 is our annual Sunday School

Thanksgiving Feast! Sunday School students will partake in a feast consisting of some traditional items (bread, popcorn, turkey, cheese) and some not-so-traditional items (fruit snacks and jello) during Sunday School time. Each child/youth is encouraged to bring a food item to share on this day. Our Sunday School Commission and High School Class will help set up the food for the students to enjoy as we give thanks to God for our many blessings!

• Sunday, Dec. 19 marks the debut of “Joy Story,” this year’s Sunday School Christmas Program that you won’t want to miss! Written by St. John’s own Schlosser family, “Joy Story” is a delightful tale that incorporates familiar characters from a children’s movie while sharing the traditional Christmas story of

Jesus in the manger. All of the Sunday School classes will be involved, so make plans now to support their efforts while celebrating this very special time of year!
