Media Management

Automatic Deletion of Expired Data Without Running Synthetic Full Backups - Early Release This new process automatically deletes expired items from Commvault without the user having to run synthetic full backups. This process, which runs automatically as part of the IndexBackup schedule (at the backup set level), offers the added benefit of viewing and recovering only unexpired data during Browse and Recovery operations.

More Information

Data Aging and Retention for Laptop Backup

Index Backup Enhancements Beginning with Commvault V11 SP11, index backups now operate at the storage policy level, rather than at the MediaAgent level. This change ensures that an index backup is stored along with its associated data backup, thus providing optimal recoverability of data in disaster recovery situations.

More Information

Indexing Version 2: Index Backup

New Unusual Job Activity Alert (Indexing Version 2 only) - Early Release Indexing processes now detect anomalies that occur during regular backup or synthetic backup jobs. Anomalies include sudden increases or decreases in the number of files or folders that are created, modified, or deleted. One time per day, the Backup MediaAgent evaluates the current day’s backup jobs to determine whether any anomalies occurred. If an anomaly occurred, an alert appears in the CommCell Console.

Live Sync Replication of SQL Databases With the Live Sync feature, you can perform incremental replication from a backup of a SQL database to a synced copy of the SQL database. The Live Sync operation continuously applies changes from the source database backups since the last sync point.

The Commvault software automatically performs the Live Sync operation in the following cases:

• After you configure Live Sync. The software replicates the data from the most recent full cycle.

• After a log backup completes on a database that is part of the Live Sync configuration.

Key Features

The Live Sync features does the following things:

• Automatically initiates the replication after a log backup is completed on the source database.

• Minimizes the impact on the CPU and I/O of production systems by using the backup data for replications, which avoids the need to read the source database again for replication.

• Copies the backup data to remote disaster recovery (DR) sites with deduplication, which minimizes the wide area network (WAN) traffic, and then runs Live Sync at the DR site.

• Supports the destination database sync in standby mode so that users can schedule workloads on the destination server.

File Activity Anomaly Detection on Client Computers Abnormal file activities on a client computer can be caused by ransomware malware.

You can detect abnormal activities on a client computer by configuring the File Activity Anomaly Alert. This alert notifies the user when an abnormal file activity is detected.

Key Features

• When abnormal file activities are detected on the client computer, data aging operations are automatically disabled.

• The client computer is monitored every 5 minutes for file activities, and any abnormal activity is reported to the administrator by an alert and event. For the first 7 days after you configure the alert, the client computer is monitored and analyzed for daily activity. After 7 days, alerts and events are sent to the administrator only if a large number of activities are detected.

More Information

Getting Started with the Tintri Storage Array

Support for the HDS Targetless Snapshot CCI Engine - Early Release Feature The Commvault software already supports the HDS CCI engine that produces Thin Image snapshots. In this release, we added support for the HDS Targetless Snap CCI engine as part of Commvault IntelliSnap suite, in order to support data protection operations and management operations with HDS storage arrays that have the CCI engine.

Key Features

The Targetless HDS snapshot engine uses the Thin Image pool to store snapshots without creating a secondary volume at the time of the snapshot.

The additional storage volume for storing the snapshot data is created only upon request—that is, when users trigger a snapshot operation such as a mount operation or a browse operation.

The storage volume is then provisioned, and is deleted as soon as the operation is complete. During a hardware revert operation, the snapshot data from the Thin Image pool is used to restore the source device’s contents.

The benefit of using the HDS Targetless Snap CCI engine is that is consumes less space for the snapshot backups.

We recommend that you install the latest service pack to remain current with all fixes and enhancements; however, we fully support customers on the three most recent service packs. Thus, to remain fully supported, you must apply service packs at least every 6 months.
