  DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE Wow!  What a great convention we had.  A big Thank You to our committee and to everyone that had a part in our convention.  Our attendance was bigger than we have had in a long time.    Congratulations to all of our Award and Fellowship recipients.  You were all very deserving.  Thank You for being a Lion.  Time is flying by and it seems like we just started 2016.  I still have some Clubs to visit, and have thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of the Lions of our great District.  If there is anything I can help your club with, give me a call.  I would like to put a booklet of projects together for our Disrict. I need each club to send me a couple of projects that you have done.  I need what the project is, what you had to do to complete the project, number of members it took, and what is needed for the project.  The reason I want to do this is to give other clubs ideas for projects they could complete.  I will compile and get copy to each club.  Form to follow in this newsletter.  I will accept projects until the end of May and have booklets to clubs at the beginning of the new Lions year.    Let`s have fun as we Serve!  DG Pam 231/889‐4870 dgibbons4870@charter.net

COLEMAN LION ELECTED 2ND VICE DISTRICT GOVERNORLion Al Roeseler was elected to the position of 2nd VDG at the District 11 E1 Convention. Al has been a Coleman Lion for 15 years and has served as their President several times. He is presently the Zone Chair of Region 2, Zone 1. He is extremely active in his club’s activities and was the superintendent of the Coleman Schools prior to his retirement. Lion Al has also worked on trying to secure a new club for District 11 E1.

      

DISTRICT GOVERNORS ELECTDistrict Governor Pam Schroeder  presents the insignia coat patches to the 2016‐17 District 11 E1 officers: 2nd VDG Al Roeseler, 1st VDG Peggy Walls, Governor Elect Ron Gibson.

DISTRICT CONVENTION VOTING RESULTSAll the policy changes voted on at the convention passed: 1. Paws With A Cause becomes a District Service Project. 2. Lions belonging to a campus club will pay 50%      of the District dues. 3. Voted to allow District 11E1 trustees to the Michigan Lions Foundation to serve 3consecutive terms of office, which complies with the Foundation By‐Laws Endorsed the project for the Michigan All State Band to become a State Project – January 16, Cabinet meeting.

BIG RAPIDS LIONS The Big Rapids Lions Club had District Governor Pam Schroeder join Club members for their March Meeting. Governor Schroeder thanked the Club for all they do for the community. She outlined some of the upcoming events open for Lions Club members to participate in at the District and State level. New club members Rodney Fredrick and Dennis Finney were fortunate to have her present to conduct their induction into the Club. The Club meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at The Gate.  

 

CEDAR/MAPLE CITY LIONS The Cedar/Maple City Lions held a Benefit Pancake Breakfast on April 3, for Paige Bugai who is at the U of M Hospital. Her mother Brenda Bugai is staying with her and has no income. The Lions Club raised around $3,000.00 with the Pancake Breakfast, 50/50 drawing & a donation Jar. We had great community support.  Photo right  ‐  Judy Bugai (Grandmother), Lynn Garvin (Aunt), Andrea Kerby & Lion Stacey Wilcox with son Charlie, thanking the crowd. 

 

KINGSLEY LIONS ‐ PROACTIVE The Kingsley Lions Club has an exciting and active summer planned.  We will be out “in our blues” at three locations (Northland Grocery Store, Northland Gas Station, and Kingsley Post Office) for White Cane Week on April 29th & 30th.  On Saturday, June 4th, the KLC will be having an information booth during the Adams Fly Festival. This is a community fly fishing festival that is growing in popularity every year.  On Saturday, July 16th, the KLC will host an “All Wheels” Car/Truck/Motorcycle Show during the Kingsley Heritage Days Festival. We have also asked a local DJ to perform during the Car Show paid for with the generous donation by the Kingsley Downtown Development Authority. We also have PDG Dan Gibbons coming to the festival with the KidSight trailer, which will also be in the parade. We will also be providing hot buttered popcorn during the Beer Tent and live band/dance.  And on Thursday, August 25th, the Kingsley Lions will host our Annual Free Community Picnic at the Civic Center South Park Pavilion between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm.  We will be posting updates on the Kingsley Lions Club Facebook page. Please plan on coming and joining us!!  

 

                              

         

      

 

       

     

     

LIONS MAY NEWSLETTER 

LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL 1ST VICE PRESIDENT TO VISIT MICHIGAN PIN TRADERS 

 1ST VP Bob Corlew has notified the Michigan Pin Traders Club that he will be attending the 8th Michigan Pin Swap on May 6 and 7, 2016, in White Cloud at the White Cloud Lions Den. He will be arriving Friday afternoon and leaving Sunday morning. Arrangements have been made for a “Meet and Greet” buffet dinner on Saturday night May 7, starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Shack Bed and Breakfast, 2263 W. 14th Street, White Cloud, MI. (six miles west of White Cloud, MI). The meal cost is $15.00. Everyone is invited to attend the pin swap and the Saturday night dinner for VP Corlew. Reservations are needed: PDG Jim Walls at walls7@hotmail.com or call 231‐796‐2861.

BALDWIN LIONS Mr.Bruce Machinski from the Lake County Historical Society presented a program on the progress of the new historical society building project. He did a very impressive reenactment of a local "character" that has left his mark on Lake County History. In an effort to support our local community as well as the usual Lions' causes, the club donated $200 to help complete the building project. The funds donated came from the BALDWIN Lions most recent fundraiser, chocolate candy sales during Thanksgiving and Christmas.  

DISTRICT BUS TRIPThe District is planning a trip to see the new Leader Dog facilities on Saturday, June 11. The cost is $35.00 a person and lunch at Leader Dog is $7.00. The bus holds 56 passengers and will pick up in Traverse City, Cadillac and Mt. Pleasant. Spouses or a friend are invited. For reservations call – Governor Pam at 213‐889‐4870 or e‐mail dgibbons4870@charter.net.

1st VDG: RON GIBSON MESSAGE My wife Barb and I are avid readers. We enjoy reading biographies and books on history. We have learned about the lives of presidents, politicians, war heroes, etc. Of interest is the legacy they leave to their families, communities, and the world. As Lions, we are being asked to leave a legacy to our communities. Lions International is encouraging clubs all over the world, as part of our 100th anniversary, to engage in a Centennial Legacy Project. Leave something to your community that it will remember your club for. It could be an ongoing scholarship, a building or pavilion, new signs, park benches, a flower garden, etc. Something that reminds your community that you are there, have been, and will be. Let me encourage you to get a committee to look at the possibilities and then make that idea a reality for your community! CADILLAC LIONS SPONSOR BRANCH

LIONS CLUB The Wexford Trail Blazing Lions became a branch club with five members sponsored by the Cadillac Lions. The emphasis of the club is diabetes. The Lions ride snowmobiles, motorcycles and snowmobiles on wheels long distances to raise money for Diabetes Research and Awareness. They have ridden through 34 states, 7 Canadian Provinces and in Europe to raise $243,000.00 for diabetes causes. Welcome to our 5 new branch Lions. 

ARCADIA LIONS Arcadia Lions return from their winter hibernation with several events for the month of May. The first Pancake Breakfast of the year will be served on May 30, the Sunday of Memorial weekend featuring pancakes, eggs, & sausage. Traffic control at the Grit & Gravel off road bicycle rally and road clean up along US 22 for our annual Arbor Day spring clean-up activity round out the month.  

Lions around the world are saddened by the devastating earthquakes that hit Japan and Ecuador. LCIF has been in contact with the local Lions leadership to assess the needs of those affected. The foundation has approved a Major Catastrophe Grant for each country - US$250,000 in Japan and US$150,000 in Ecuador – and Lions are already on the ground. Lions are encouraged to help. Donate to LCIF!

 

2nd VDG PEGGY WALLS MESSAGE 

A Rare opportunity awaits the Lions of Michigan, especially the Lions of 11‐E‐1!  International Vice President Bob Corlew will be visiting us on May 6‐7.  There is time to meet him at the Michigan Pin swap, or at the meet (4pm) and dine (5pm) at the "Shack" on May 7.  I would encourage you all to try and attend.  It is a time to shine and show our enthusiasm in being part of this International Association.  Reservations are necessary for the meal at the bed and breakfast ($15). Call by May 1.  Any questions‐‐‐ 231‐796‐2861 or 352 ‐ 586‐3017.   It will be a good number of years before we have another American serve as International President.  Do come and wish him well on his year starting in July 2016.  His theme is "New Mountains to Climb".  Let us show him that the Lions of 11‐E‐1 are up to the challenge.

HELEN KELLER EXHIBIT

The Braille and Talking Book Library are co‐hosting a traveling exhibit from the American Printing for the Blind—“Child in a Strange Country:  Helen Keller and the History of Education for People Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired”.   The exhibit is fully accessible and will be using tactile reproductions and authentic artifacts revealing the keys to Helen Keller’s education as well as educational tools and techniques developed for people who are blind or visually impaired and/or deaf or hard of hearing.  The exhibit will be in the rotunda area of the Michigan Library and Historical Center in Lansing and is FREE.

“Wexford Trail Blazing Lions”   Cadillac Lion Bill Bradfield is organizing a two phase adventure to raise funds for Diabetes Research and Awareness in honor of the Lions Centennial Celebra on. The first adventure will be a motorcycle ride in late July 2016, traveling from Cadillac Michigan to Sault Ste. Marie. The ride will con nue in the Upper Peninsula for a couple of days and then return back to Cadillac, exact dates TBA. The second ride will start in late January leaving from Sault Ste. Marie riding for 6 to 8 days on snowmobiles. This ride will con nue in the States of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Ontario and back to Michigan and last 15 more days.  In the last 7 years, Bill has organized 8 extreme rides that have traveled 558,000 miles collec vely with 140 riders through 12  me zones in 33 States, 7 Provinces and 6 different countries raising an incredible $243,000.00 for Diabetes Research and Awareness Promo on while partnering with the American Diabetes Associa on.  You can donate on line at www.diabetes.org/lionscentennialcelebra on or mail checks to: American Diabetes Associa on, 1550 E. Beltline Ave. SE, Suite 250, Grand Rapids Mi., 49506. If you are interested in going on either ride or have ques ons please contact Bill Bradfield at hoxeyvillain@hotmail.com

COLEMAN LIONS - LEOS April 21, was a busy day for Coleman Lions members - we held a KidSight vision screening at Coleman Elementary School for incoming kindergarteners as they toured their new school and we started our two day Bake Sale at the Library! Both events were a success. Our Adopt-A-Highway clean-up on US 10 with our STAR Leo Club is scheduled for April 30.

 On Saturday April 16, the Cedar/Maple City Lions Club did their Highway Trash pick‐up, 3 miles on highway M‐72. Lions Dan Hobbins, Roy Romanowski, Val Eimers, Todd Guernsey Carrlin Niess, Anne‐Marie Dunklow, Bryan Niess, Marry‐Anne Dunklow & Pat Hobbins .

MIDLAND LIONS – KIDSIGHTSt. John's Episcopal Church invited the Midland Lions to screen their preschool class. Mike Hays joined  Sandy House that day and he enjoyed the process so much, he decided he would like to become a certified screener. Mike has had his first of three training days. Fifteen children were screened and they all passed. The teachers were welcoming and helpful. 

ONEKAMA CHARTER NIGHTThe Onekama Lions will be celebrating their 49th Charter Night on Saturday, May 7th at the Onekama Lions Den at the Manistee County Fairgrounds. Everyone is invited. A Swiss Steak Dinner will be served. Call Barb – 231‐723‐9783 for reservations and questions.
