1 Fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos and friends of District 14-B, We are now in the last third of this Lions year and we must do all that we can to increase our membership. Has your club had a net positive gain in membership for this year? So far this year, twelve District 14-B clubs have had net gains, twelve have had net losses, nine have stayed the same, and one (Coraopolis Moon Township) has disbanded with a loss of 8 members. Overall, the district’s membership count is 23 less than the beginning of the Lions year. We all miss opportunities to recruit new members. I’m as guilty as everyone. I recently asked the pastor of the church that sponsors the food pantry in White Oak if any of the White Oak Lions who are food pantry volunteers had ever asked her to join our Lions Club. Nobody had. I’m telling you this because about ten Lions missed an opportunity to ask someone to join, who was an obvious prospective member. I worked at that food pantry for many months and only after some prompting from Lion Barb, did the light go on in my head! I gave the pastor an application and she is joining our club. We all need to do better. Getting new members is a 365-day a year task; it is not good enough to try every two or three months, or once a month or even once a week. We must look at every day as being the day that we will get a new member. We need to keep membership on our minds all the time. There are many people out there who would become Lions if only someone asked them. Each club should plan a community membership drive to promote Lionism. There may be many who would like to be Lions; they simply need to learn about us and receive the encouragement to serve. Plan a membership meeting. Invite your neighbor, letter carrier, pharmacist, son, daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandson or granddaughter, mechanic, grocery store manager, cashier or somebody that you talk to when you are shopping. Or here is a novel idea, invite your wife or husband! Have a special dinner and have a good speaker; ask somebody from one of the charities that your club supports to speak. You can invite someone from the District, another club, or ask one of your own Lions to speak. If you get someone from one of the charities that you support to speak, don’t forget to give them an application and ask them to join. Increasing membership numbers is vital for every club and our District to continue to function as they should, to carry out new projects and objectives, and to stay in good standing with Lions Clubs International. In closing, I want to invite everyone to attend one of the Multiple District 14 Global Action Teams Spring Symposiums. Topics to be covered include the MyLion Web Based Reporting System, Orientation: Not Just for New Lions, Mentoring, Membership, Club Growth and New Clubs. Fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos and friends of District 14-B,

We are now in the last third of this Lions year and we must do all that we can to increase

our membership. Has your club had a net positive gain in membership for this year? So

far this year, twelve District 14-B clubs have had net gains, twelve have had net losses,

nine have stayed the same, and one (Coraopolis Moon Township) has disbanded with a

loss of 8 members. Overall, the district’s membership count is 23 less than the beginning

of the Lions year.

We all miss opportunities to recruit new members. I’m as guilty as everyone. I recently

asked the pastor of the church that sponsors the food pantry in White Oak if any of the

White Oak Lions who are food pantry volunteers had ever asked her to join our Lions Club.

Nobody had. I’m telling you this because about ten Lions missed an opportunity to ask

someone to join, who was an obvious prospective member. I worked at that food pantry

for many months and only after some prompting from Lion Barb, did the light go on in my

head! I gave the pastor an application and she is joining our club. We all need to do better.

Getting new members is a 365-day a year task; it is not good enough to try every two or

three months, or once a month or even once a week. We must look at every day as being the day that we will get a new

member. We need to keep membership on our minds all the time. There are many people out there who would become Lions

if only someone asked them.

Each club should plan a community membership drive to promote Lionism. There may be many who would like to be Lions;

they simply need to learn about us and receive the encouragement to serve. Plan a membership meeting. Invite your neighbor,

letter carrier, pharmacist, son, daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandson or granddaughter, mechanic, grocery store

manager, cashier or somebody that you talk to when you are shopping. Or here is a novel idea, invite your wife or husband!

Have a special dinner and have a good speaker; ask somebody from one of the charities that your club supports to speak. You

can invite someone from the District, another club, or ask one of your own Lions to speak. If you get someone from one of

the charities that you support to speak, don’t forget to give them an application and ask them to join.

Increasing membership numbers is vital for every club and our District to continue to function as they should, to carry out

new projects and objectives, and to stay in good standing with Lions Clubs International.

In closing, I want to invite everyone to attend one of the Multiple District 14 Global Action Teams Spring Symposiums. Topics

Greetings to my fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos and friends of District 14-B,

As I write this message I find myself surrounded by Lions gathered to build and share their

leadership skills.

This weekend wraps up a busy month which began with the 3rd council meeting of the

Multi-District held in Altoona followed by our district cabinet meeting. I was honored to

attend LCI’s annual Vice District Governor/District Governor Elect training held the week of February 11th in St. Charles,

Illinois. This information-filled event brought Lions from around the globe together and provided us with the necessary

tools to help guide us into and through our upcoming terms as District Governors. During the week, we were treated to a

tour of LCI Headquarters and were given the opportunity to visit the resting place of Melvin Jones. Our counterparts from

India joined our classroom so that we could take part in a cross-cultural exchange for various discussions which included

new member recruitment role play activities.

I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to acknowledge the incredible instruction provided by PID Cindy

Gregg. Group 28, which includes a few VDGs from other states, is certainly the best trained crop of VDGs having been

under PID Cindy’s expert tutelage. I am looking forward to the 4th day of training which will take place at the beginning

of the 2019 International Convention in Milan.

Upon returning home I was able to catch up with my family and work for a few days before setting off to York, PA to

attend the 2019 Regional Lions Leadership Institute where myself and Lion Eliana Latterman represented District 14-B.

The weekend long training further enhanced both of our skills and provided introduction to Lions from across the state. I

encourage anyone with an interest in leadership roles within the Lions to consider applying for next year’s RLLI.

As February comes to a close and Spring begins to peek through the winter clouds, I can say with the utmost confidence

that I am ready for what is around the not so distant corner. The next few months will be filled with tasks such as

finalizing the goals I have chosen to set for our district, working on projects that are in various stages of planning and

development, filling spots within the cabinet and preparing an updated directory over the summer. I will be reaching out

to cabinet members in the coming weeks and will fill vacancies as necessary, however I hope anyone who is interested in

learning how the district works to please reach out to me. We would love to work with you and help you navigate your

path whether you are taking that first step or continuing to climb along the leadership ladder.

Remember, as John Maxwell once wrote, the pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist expects it to change, but

the leader adjusts the sails. I look forward to setting sail with all of you in the coming months, and I know that when the

winds are unfavorable, with your trust and support, I will adjust the sails.

Mardi Gras, also called Pancake Day, Pancake

Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday and Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras is

French for "Fat Tuesday"), is the last day of feasting

before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras

depends on date of Easter (it always falls 47 days

before Easter Sunday), a moveable feast, meaning the date

of Mardi Gras also changes every year. It can vary from as

early as February 3rd to as late as March 9th.

While there are carnival festivals in many countries on

Mardi Gras, in the English-speaking world the term "Mardi

Gras" is particularly associated with the carnival

celebrations in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Recently it

has evolved to refer to the whole period of festivities, not

just the single day of Mardi Gras.

Lion Susan and I are both

honored and humbled by the

overwhelming support that was

shown to us during the Council

meeting on February 1st thru

February 3rd. The friendships we have made over the past years,

the working relationships and the good times were shown this

weekend.

To all that drove a distance in the cold winter weather to vote,

your true Lionism was evident as this is what Lions do when

necessary. We both thank you for your willingness to go the

extra mile.

As the now endorsed candidate for MD-14, our next hill to climb is the election in Milan. If elected, I commit to

be a “full time” Director representing both MD-14 and Lions of the world. I will do my best to support the motto

of “We Serve”.

May they rest in Peace…

WHAT IS THE LIONS BAND? The Pennsylvania Lions All-State Band provides high school musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform

a wide variety of music in both state-level performances and international tours. The band is sponsored by Lions

Clubs of Pennsylvania and students participate at little to no cost thanks to their generosity

.

The All-State Band is under the musical direction of Dr. Russell McCutcheon, and features a senior staff of

experienced music educators from across Pennsylvania. The All-State Band Committee administers operations

of the band, led by committee chair Vince LoRusso.

CHECK US OUT ON SOCIAL MEDIA!

Facebook: palionsband

The Pennsylvania All-State Band performs each year in May at the Pennsylvania Lions State Convention. We

call this the "State Band".

In 2019, the All-State Band will rehearse and perform over two days at Kalahari Resorts (May 17-

18). There is no cost to participate in the State Band.

In selected years, the band will travel to the International Lions Convention, making performance and sight-

seeing stops along the way. This is the "International Tour".

Participation in the band is open to all high school woodwind, brass and percussion musicians. The

International Tour also has membership opportunities for color guard performers.

So, can I do both? Yes, you can certainly apply for membership in both ensembles; this is highly encouraged! While the core membership of

each ensemble is the same, the experience is very different. The state band is a concentrated period of rehearsal and

performance over two days, similar to an All-County or District/Region Honor Band. The international band features a

longer preparation period in a college environment, then a tour to a major city with performances and sightseeing/fun

activities along the way.

Do I have to do both?

No, you can choose to apply for membership in both, state band only, or international band only. While you do not have

to apply for both, participation in the state band will be considered when selection decisions about international band are

made, especially for competitive sections.

On Sunday, February 17, 2019 a dedication for the installed stair lift was held at the Trinity Missionary Baptist

Church in Lawrenceville. This was a celebration of the hard work needed to secure funding for the Lions-Trinity

Project, spearheaded by Lion Bob Conrad (BLLC). Donations for the project was provided by the Bloomfield-

Lawrenceville Lions Club, the Trinity Church, 11 other Lions Clubs, (past) State Representative Dom Costa and

a grant from the Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation. I would also like to recognize Tasso Katselas who contributed

a large donation to the Trinity church for the stair lift and Independent Mobility (Lawrenceville) who installed

the stair lift. Lion Bob wanted a local company involved with installing the stair lift. It was important for the

church to have the lift installed to give people with disabilities access to the 2 levels of the church. Light

refreshments were served in the hall afterwards to thank all who participated.

As much as this was a celebration there was a sadness to the event. Lion Bob Conrad died

the day before the dedication after a short but serious illness. Without Lion Bob's tenacity

and vision the stair lift wouldn't have been realized. We felt his presence at the dedication.

Thank you Lion Bob for all your service to this project and everything you did in the
