FOR BERRYTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH & FRIENDS www.berrytonumc.org
OUR MISSION STATEMENT As members of the Berryton United Methodist Church, our mission is to
be servants of Jesus Christ, seeking to fulfill the Great Commission through worship, prayer, Bible study, service and fellowship.
Andrew Conard, Preacher September 2018 Cell Phone: (785) 925-7701 Church Office: (785) 862-9494
Hello Friends, Whether it is worship, concerts, scouts,
service groups, or school gatherings, Berryton United Methodist Church has a long history of welcoming the people of the community. The opening of the Family Life Center has been a cat-alyst to the ministry of welcoming people. Today, we are looking to the future of extending God’s welcome to all people in the community and be-yond.
This year, Trustees of Berryton United Methodist Church have identified a number of areas around the church property that require improvement to help us continue to meet the needs of those who use our buildings and grounds, as well as create a great first impression for those who visit for the first time. These include, repairing and repaving parking lot, installing new parking lot lighting, burying electrical service line, and replacing ceiling tiles for Children’s Ministry. Our Finance team or-ganized and launched our First Impressions capital campaign which sought to raise $30,000 with commitments to be received on August 12, 2018 and a one-year commitment period which will con-tinue through August 11, 2019. As of August 27, we have received commitments for $30,690. Thank you for your generosity! If you have yet to make your commitment, you can pick up a commitment card at the entrance to the sanctuary and return in in the offering plate. Any funds received beyond our goal will be used under the guidance of our Trustees and Administrative Council for capital pro-jects that will continue to extend God’s welcome to our neighbors.
I am so proud to the preacher at a church with a commitment to help welcome new people. Thank you for your generosity in this campaign. I hope you have a great month! Grace and Peace,

Book Review: By Teresa Stambaugh Book: Hospitable Planet; Faith, Action and Climate Change Author: Stephen A. Jurovics UMW Reading Program: Social Action Bonus Book (Green) Can be found in the Church Library. Stephen Jurovics’ book is an important work of witness and states that faith and connection to God should lead us to save and heal our planet from a looming environmental catastro-phe. Based primarily on the Five Books of Moses, this book speaks to people of faith, offer-ing a handbook on the Bible’s greatest mandate for mortal existence—to choose life for the earth and all its inhabitants. Churches can massively reduce their impact on God’s good earth if they understand the Bible’s mandate and develop practical skills to decrease their energy use.

SEPTEMBER MISSION FOCUS: TOPEKA JUSTICE UNITY AND MINISTRY PROJECT:
Berryton United Methodist Church has joined the Topeka JUMP Ministry. Topeka JUMP is a coalition of 20 congregations in Shawnee County, Kansas. The organization was incorporated on May 23rd, 2012 and achieved its nonprofit status on November 4th, 2012. Rather than provid-ing direct services to individuals impacted by community problems, To-peka JUMP takes a grassroots approach by identifying long-term, sys-tematic solutions to those problems. Topeka JUMP's mission is to be a powerful vehicle for marginalized populations in Shawnee County to fight for Justice. They do this by building power to address serious communi-
ty problems; to build strong relationships in the community across racial, denominational, geo-graphic, and economic lines; and to empower members of the community to be apart of the solu-tion for problems that personally affected them. Marshall Miller, Kenny Sutton, and Betsy Wiens are our Justice ministry leaders. They will be setting up meetings so YOU can learn more about this important ministry and become a part of the ministry as well. Marshall Miller, 785-379-5008, meeting date September 25, Kenny Sutton, 785-224-9022, meeting date October 10, or Betsy Wiens, 785-862-9433, meeting date October 1. All meetings begin at 7:00 PM and will be held at the church. You may also contact Teresa Stambaugh, 862-6621, with any questions that you might have.
What if the church left the building?

CANCER PREVENTION Stopping smoking and avoiding secondhand cigarette smoke. It’s re-ported that 20% of all cancer in the US results from obesity, lack of physical ac-tivity, excessive amounts of alcohol consumption and nutrition. In an effort to prevent cancer individuals can eat a balanced diet includ-
ing fruits and vegetables daily, limit red meat consumption to three servings per week, in-crease physical exercise to 150 minutes per week, and avoid alcohol in excess of one to two drinks a day. Additional information is available on American Cancer Website—Cancer.org & on WebMD.
We would love to see YOUR children as we start a new year of Sunday school at Berryton United Methodist Church. Our fall focus is At HOME with GOD. We will be exploring stories about Jesus’ family beginning with the story of Jesus joining his earthly family. This is a familiar story for chil-dren, but it is not a story we usually tell at this time of year. We will discuss Jesus’ birth as we talk about his family. It is important for families to tell their stories. Whether it is the story of the birth of a child, the adoption of a child, or the blending of a family by marriage, our families’ stories are im-portant. Family stories help us feel a sense of belonging. Just like us, Jesus was a part of a family. We look forward to having time with your children to learn about Jesus!!! TATs starts September 11. We will be asking for donations of fruit, snacks and funding. We could still use a couple volunteers; weekly or monthly. Please pray for the TATs team and TATs chil-dren as we begin our new year. We will support Berryton Elementary School again this year with prayer warriors, volunteers to bake, and help with teacher projects. There is a sign up sheet in the hall to the sanctuary for your use. Any Children’s Ministry questions, please contact Betsy Wiens at [email protected] or 785-862-9433.
Dear Parents, Happy New Year with T.A.T.s! (Totally Awesome Tuesdays)! We are so excited to get started!!! TATS will begin September 11, 2018. Berryton United Methodist Church representatives will be
at Berryton Elementary School to pick up your child. We will walk the children to the church. Our plans for each week include snacks, crafts, cooking, recreation, music, and a Christian message. The sessions run from after school until 6:00 PM. Please plan to pick up your child by 6:00 PM . You will need to send a note to school with your child to let them know that your child will be attending TATs. If your child is not attending TATs for a week, please notify the school. Also, please notify Betsy Wiens ([email protected]). To enroll your child in TATs, please complete the form be-low, detach and mail to Berryton United Methodist Church, PO Box 25, 7010 SE Berry-ton Road, Berryton, Ks 66409, hand in to the church office, fax at 862-2152, or email to [email protected]. Questions, please contact the Berryton Church office: 862-9494 or Betsy Wiens at 862-9433. TATS will be in session when the school is in ses-sion.
