As the node was at 16ä51, it missed centrality by 11 degrees, meaning the darkening of the lunar disk was slight and the eclipse brief. Most observers would not have known there was an eclipse if they had not been told. Not so with the upcoming solar eclipse, of May 9. It will be at 19Þ31, less than 2½ degrees from the south node. It will start in northwest Australia and then head out over the south Pacific. As it will cross the International Dateline, it will go retrograde in time, starting out on the 10th and ending up in the 9th. Natasha Nikolaevna Zacharenko/Gurdin

Natalie Wood NATALIE WOOD was born on July

20, 1938, at 11:16 am PST, in SanFrancisco, of Russian immigrant par-

ents. Natalie in fact grew up speaking Russian(with an American accent) as well as English.

When I lived in southern California yearsago I knew a woman who was born of a Rus-sian immigrant mother and the story hermother told her is almost identical to the storytold to Natalie, or for that matter, the story thatYul Brynner told about himself — and all likelyto be false. Natalie’s story goes like this:

Mom and dad were Russian immigrants.Dad came from Vladivostok, while momgrew up in China. The first problem we haveis that Vladivostok was, and has been formuch of its history, a closed city. No onecame or went without government clearance.Yul Brynner claimed he was from Vladivos-tok, which, perhaps not by accident, meanthis past could not be independently verified.Which anyone familiar with the city knowsfull well, as it’s the reason to claim it as one’shometown.

The second problem is that Harbin, the“Chinese” city where Natalie’s mother wasraised, was founded by Russia in 1898. Whothen lost it as a result of the Russo-Japanesewar of 1905. After the Russian Revolutionof 1917 the city, nominally under Chinesecontrol. with a mostly Russian populationwith murky international status, became a ref-uge for defeated White Russians.

Which makes Natalie’s parents, as wellas first generation Americans of Russian de-scent that I knew on the west coast, the chil-dren and grandchildren of those who fled thecivil war of 1917-23.

Those fleeing the Bolsheviks could goeast, west, or south. South was the Crimeaand Turkey and was aptly summarized, bothby Peter Ouspensky as well as the movie, theMaltese Falcon.

Go west and you ended up as part of theRussian emigre community in Paris. Add afew years and you have the Russian bartenderSascha in Casablanca, to whom Carl owesmoney. Remember?

Fleeing east, down the newly completedTrans Siberian Railroad was a much longerjourney and, apparently, one that filled thetravellers with dread, so much so that theyuniversally denied being refugees. But thereare too many of them for there to be any other

explanation. Read the Wiki biographyclosely and you will learn that Natalie’sgrandparents were in the revolution and re-alize the only word missing from the accountis the word “refugee” itself.

With the memory of monsters under herbed, I mean, Reds chasing her down the rails(the movie Doctor Zhivago comes to mind),you will now understand why Natalie’smother kept her daughter apart from otherchildren, eternally fearful she would be kid-napped or worse. In the chart, Natalie’smother is the 10th house, which here is Can-cer. Natalie’s mother feels deeply and is eas-ily frightened, so far as her daughter is con-cerned. Remember that in assigning housesto others, we are viewing Maria Stepanovna,Natalie’s mother, through Natalie’s eyes. Thisis not necessarily Natalie’s mother as themother saw herself.

The ruler of Cancer, and thus the mother,is the Moon in Taurus, which wants to be inthe 8th, which, to the mother, is the 11th, ofother people. Moon in Taurus is not that sen-sitive overall, preferring what is earthy andimmediately practical. The mother looks atthe people in her daughter’s life (the turned11th house) and asks what good are they. Notethe tight sextile of Moon to Jupiter. Sakoianand Acker bluntly state the Moon-Jupitersquare to be an overly-indulgent mother. Suchas one that moves the entire family 500 milesfor her 5 year old daughter’s career.

SIMILAR to my long-ago friend,Natalie’s immigrant mother was de-termined to see her child succeed in

the world, and from an early age. Unlike Na-talie, my friend lacked Natalie’s sheer force, and so became a never-was. But not Natalie.

Which becomes clear when we analyzeNatalie Wood’s chart. Sun-Mars-Pluto, thethree most dynamic and powerful planets inthe sky, all tightly conjunct and in the 10thhouse. In late Cancer, Natalie was power-fully focused on herself, intensely introspec-tive, intensely fearful and trying as hard asshe could to keep it all to herself. As astrolo-gers we would ordinarily think of Sun-Mars-Pluto in the 10th as someone who would gofrom one deep, intense explosion to another, always in full public view, but with NatalieWood’s life in hindsight, we must look further.

First, notice the Cancer grouping has noopposition, which means there was no exter-

Sun and MoonSun and MoonTHE Sun above the horizon makes

you a recognized individualist, which is also true of the Sun in any

angular house: you decide your course foryourself. Below the horizon and not in the1st or 4th denotes one whose course is likelyto be decided by others.

The Moon above the horizon brings yourpersonality out in the open, as it does also inany angular house; you attract attention bypersonal magnetism. Below the horizon andnot in the 1st or 4th denotes a more self-ef-facing personality avoiding attention.

It is important to understand the Sunmakes the rules and the Moon carries themout, not unlike the father and mother (theo-retically, at least) and his rule becomes yourfate. He is the authority in deciding yourrole in life while the Moon possesses del-egated authority from him to act in his nameand circle the wheel to contact each planetby arranged aspect in orderly fashion andcollect the facts you need in playing the rolehis house-position denotes.

Always note the latitude of the Moon atbirth, and the closer it is to 5O18’ which is hergreatest distance. The closer her latitude, themore latitude or leeway you take in handlingmatters having to do with your role in life, the more freedom you assume in your ownname and the more self-reliant you are.

Your Sun throws light on the house heis in, and that is the department of life whereyou shine best and are intended to radiateout according to whatever that house rep-resents. You are an authority and a leaderthere, and recognized as such; you have aninner consciousness of assurance in thatdepartment, and your main role in life isdictated by that house. — The Way of As-trology, 1967. G-4—JUPITER:

THE keynote of Jupiter is expansionand purification. Northerly windsof moderate velocity and fine weather

cumuli clouds generally prevail under thenormal action of Jupiter. A maximum gen-eration of ozone accompanies high baromet-ric pressure. Although Jupiter is commonlyassociated with thunder, the influence of thisplanet tends to reduce static electricity.Storms arising from Jupiter’s magnetic po-sitions or configurations are usually followedby a clear, fresh condition of the atmosphere, even in hottest periods. This planet may rea-sonably be termed the “air-conditioner” ofthe atmosphere. It’s action combines tem-perate moisture with heat.

It is quite probable that Jupiter, becauseof its ponderousness, exerts a strong mag-netic pull on the earth as well as on otherbodies and that it affects terrestrial magne-tism appreciably. When occupying fixedsigns, principally Taurus and Aquarius, thisplanet exerts a more “fixed” pull on theearth’s crust. Seismic disturbances have beenobserved to increase in intensity during suchperiods. When Jupiter tenants the sign Scor-pio, volcanic activity, coinciding with the ex-plosive nature of Scorpio, frequently results. Some details of these manifestations togetherwith periods of magnetic displays, as re-corded in our past observations, will be re-viewed in statistical data under Jupiter.

Although normally inclining to mod-erately higher temperatures for the season,Jupiter’s influence on weather may vary ac-cording to its combinations with other bod-ies. Jupiter and Mars are conducive to ex-cessive heat, drought, sudden but brief spellsof static. In warm seasons the subsequentthunder storms clarify the atmosphere. Un-der this combination, thunder sometimesmanifests even in mid-winter. An interest-ing example of Jupiter’s effect on seasonaltemperatures was its nadir position in the

thermal sign Leo at the Winter Solstice inDecember, 1931 (December 22, 2:22 p.m.L.M.T., Washington. D.C.) which accountedfor the abnormally mild winter that followedalong the Atlantic Seaboard.

When Jupiter is in conjunction with theSun or forming angles of 60 degrees or 120degrees thereto, northerly winds of moder-ate velocity, wool-packed fleecy clouds, clearvisibility and “growing weather” are indi-cated. Displays of the Aurora Borealis aremore frequent and brilliant when Uranus andJupiter are conjoined, as on May 7, 1941, orwhen in opposition or square to each other.Abnormally high wind pressure times veryclosely to these phenomena and magneticstorms disrupt both radio and wire commu-nications service. If the United StatesWeather Bureau will review weather recordsover a period of years on dates when the con-figurations were formed, particularly con-cerning the conjunctions and oppositions ofthese two major bodies, the results shouldbe self-explanatory and yield unequivocalevidence that the combined action of thesetwo planets is responsible for the magneticstorm cold waves and gales of cold windflowing down from very high air stratas.

SATURNThe keynote of Saturn is concentration.

Although the positive influence of thisheavenly body relates to crystallization, coldand humidity, and its negative positions andconfigurations are conducive to condensationof aqueous vapors, prevailing easterly winds, heavy low clouds and slow but decisivelowering barometer, it concentrates theinfluence of the sign in which it may betenanted. When transiting the winter signs, near extreme south declination, its potencyfor cold increases. When occupying majorstations, i.e. in perihelion, when nearest tothe earth (perigee), or when in the Equator,North Tropic, also when stationary, eastwinds predominate. — A Text-Book ofLong-Range Weather Forecasting, byGeorge McCormack. T2. The Signs of the Zodiac. The circle of thezodiac is divided into 12 equal parts of 30O

in extent, each of which is called a “Sign.”The signs are divided into two groups termedNorthern and Southern, and as they form acircle the first six are always opposite the lastsix. The names and symbols should be learntin order, and it is necessary to know at aglance the sign opposite any given one. TheLatin and English names of the signs, to-gether with their symbols are as follows: Northern opposite to Southern1. Aries, Ý the Ram ....... 7. Libra, ã the balance2. Taurus, Þ the Bull ..... 8. There are many divisions and classifica-tions of the signs which will be dealt withwhere necessary, but the following classifi-cations are important and should be memo-rized. It is not necessary to enter into a de-scription of the influences of the signs anddivisions at present, as they will be fullytreated in the chapters on Judgement.

nal factor to set it off. Secondly, a person —I want to say a woman, you will think mesexist — who has been carefully groomed, since at least the age of five, to suppress herfeelings, as Natalie was, has more thanenough inner power to suppress all trace.Sun-Mars-Pluto can be, and in Natalie’s casewas, so powerful that the mask never slipped.

Square to these three (widely) is Saturn,in Aries in the 7th. Squares are aspects ofstress, of frustration, if you will, of internalconditions. “Things are just wrong with me,”as you can almost hear Natalie say. Oneblames oneself as there is no one else whocan be blamed. Squares are like that.

Then you notice the connection with the7th house. Tracing things backwards, younotice the connection with daddy. InNatalie’s chart the 4th house of the father isCapricorn, Saturn in Aries is its ruler. Capri-corn is a father who is severe and cruel, orwould be, except that Saturn is in its detri-ment in Aries. Saturn being disposed by andin square to Mars, both planet in debility, neither planet liking each other anyway,Natalie had a most interesting relationshipwith her father, but as she and her family havekept it private, I should not blunder further.

BUT it was on full display in her mar-riages. Seventh house Saturn, mar-riages would be with older men and

would, in general, not be successful. Often-times such early failures lead one to aban-don marriage. Why did Natalie continuefrom marriage to marriage? Here is the an-swer: Note that while Saturn is debilitatedin Aries, it also happens to be exalted in Li-bra, which is Natalie’s first house. Saturn inAries in the 7th sets off a 1st-7th polarity thatcompels one to have a partner, to feel a fail-ure if one does not. The first house how wesee you, what we expect of you. With chartruler Venus wanting to be in the 12th, where itcannot be seen by others, Saturn, co-ruler ofLibra, arrives to take its place. In other words,Natalie should have a husband. Some older, responsible man. That’s what people expect.Torn by her own inner demons and unable tolet the mask slip, Natalie will oblige.

But her two husbands were failures asSaturn in Aries is weak and feckless. Dis-posed by and in square to Mars, which wasconjunct the Sun (the other ruler of Aries),Natalie ground them up, unable to controlherself. This was a side of Natalie that wedid not see, it was kept carefully hidden. Ouronly glimpse was in the coroner’s report, af-ter she had died. Natalie had bruises on herbody and an abrasion on her cheek, doubt-less inflicted by her husband a few hours be-

fore. Natalie Wood’s death is of interest, Iwill return to it.

Which makes her career as an actress amake-do. Something to distract herself fromherself, so that she does not end up killingherself — or her worthless husbands — whilein a towering rage. The only one of her mov-ies I actually know, and a favorite of minedue to its slapstick, is the 1965 BlakeEdwards comedy, The Great Race. In re-searching it for these notes I was surprisedto learn that Wood (a name she disliked) didnot want to make it and that, upon its comple-tion, attempted suicide. I also learned sheturned down roles in favor of ongoing psy-choanalysis.

Where to find this hidden side? Lookstraight at the ascendant: Libra, a sign of greatbeauty, ruled by Venus, which we find inVirgo, wanting desperately to flee into the12th house, where it will find Neptune. Whatdid Natalie love? She loved detail and fussi-ness, with a compulsion to keeping her trueloves carefully hidden. Other than a crazyneed to project herself in public — Sun, Mars,Pluto in the 10th — we do not know a greatdeal about her. She is clearly not the charac-ters she played on-screen. Which was re-marked upon at the time. As a child star shewas said to have a steely plastic personality.

So far as acting per se, Carter notedmany actors have strong placements inAquarius, Cancer, Pisces and the 12th house, often with a connection to the 2nd, of moneyearned. Natalie had Cancer which gave her

the ability to feel deeply, and you will notethat Mars in Cancer ruled her second house, with Scorpio on the cusp. I would guess shetook a keen interest in getting paid for her work.

Emotionally, she is sure of herself: Sunin water, Moon in earth. As a result she doesnot question how she relates to the world.Only that she has her own inner demons tosort out, somehow. Moon in, or wanting tobe in, the 8th house is said to be a psychicplacement, but, again with hindsight, wewould judge the Moon in the sign of Taurus(only two hours into it) to be too dense, toopractical. If she had insights into how peoplethink, how they react, her acting did not re-flect it. Like as not, she, like her mother, was focused on the practical details of life. How much money, when will you pay me?

CHILDREN. Natalie had two.Aquarius is on the cusp of the 5th,which is children. Aquarius is not

a fertile sign, nor is its ruler, Saturn, and Ar-ies, where we find Saturn, is itself infertile. An infertile 5th house denies children, or lim-its their number, or causes delays. InNatalie’s case, delay and limitation. Her firstchild was born when she was 32, the secondwhen she was 35. My mother had producednine of us by that age, and was two full yearsretired from the baby-making profession. The one picture of Natalie that I have seen inwhich she looks truly happy, is from 1973with her infant daughter Natasha. Tellingly,Natalie is wearing a high-necked, long-sleevepullover. Which in some jurisdictions is a

Natalie Wood discovered drownedNovember 29, 19818:00 amAvalon, Santa Catalina, CAPlacidusMean Node

sign of a battered woman.

NATALIE Wood had a well-known,life-long fear of drowning. Suchpronounced fears are usually based

on solid experience, in other words, beingcruelly drowned in one’s most immediate pastlife. Most immediate because, with time anda bit of luck, one gradually forgets and whilethere will always be a sting, the memory willrecede as all memories eventually do.

I have found that people will always re-member a tragic death. Often as children theywill compulsively relive it in dreams, dyingover and over again, in terror. Parents shouldtake these reports seriously and offer com-fort to the child, rather than dismissing themas “only dreams.” Children who are not be-lieved by their parents will build walls be-tween themselves and the outside world, which never have happy outcomes. And thenrepeat the process decades later when theirchildren come with similar stories.

Those who have “pleasant” deaths oftencompulsively remember the circumstances oftheir final years rather than the specific de-tails of dying itself. This is often fully evi-dent by the ages of 5-10 years in the nextlife. Did you ever want to know who youwere and what you were doing in your lastlife? Go back and remember, as clearly asyou can, who and what you were on, say, your 7th birthday.

Death by drowning sounds like a fixedstar influence, so I had a look at Robson. Here is what I found:

Algol, called by many the most evil starin the sky, was at 25 Taurus. Natalie’s southnode was at 23 Taurus, but that’s the meannode, as I generally find it more descriptive.Replacing mean with true, I get 24 Taurus, more than close enough for a conjunction toAlgol. The south node is generally wherewe lose energy. In the 8th, it can be wherewe lose our life. Conjunct Algol simplymakes matters worse.

Additionally, the fixed star Alphard wasat 26 Leo. Under the entry for Alphard andthe Moon, Robson says, “if afflicted by Marsor Saturn, death by drowning or poison, es-pecially if Mars be angular. If a malefic is inconjunction with Algol, death by water orpoison.” (pg. 130)

Alphard tightly semi-sextiles Natalie’sSun and Mars, which, as an “invisible” as-pect, is a sign of the unexpected. In this in-stance, the south node functions as a malefic, and the alcohol found in Wood’s blood(0.14%) was far beyond the legal definitionof drunk, alcohol being, in fact, poisonousin large quantities. What is a quality of manypoisons? One common one, one of the moresubtle, is that you lose consciousness, or loseconscious control. Which is to say, not re-membering what you did while drunk.

Ordinarily we do not consider the fixedstars to have aspects, or at least, not stronglyand certainly not a “minor” aspect, like asemi-sextile, but it is in reading charts thatwe learn.

Otherwise we would look at planetary

N

placements, in particular, Sun, Mars andPluto in Cancer.

OF the three water signs, Cancerrepresents the vital power of theopen ocean itself. Scorpio is a pool

of stagnant water, while Pisces is the frothof fog and mist. Sun, Mars and Pluto alltightly conjunct in Cancer is an indicationof powerful emotions, and in this case, thememory of a violent death by drowning. Ioften present the numbers of the degreesthemselves. In this case, 27, 28 and 29 de-grees of Cancer, being the very end of thesign can represent the end of (the previous)life itself. This isn’t a general interpretativehint, but something you might keep in mindas you read charts. In Natalie Wood’s case,I’ve found enough that, if she were in theroom with me, I would know to ask leadingquestions and get answers that might sur-prise both of us.

Which, accidentally, tells me why thiswoman, with her deep-seated fear of thewater, would find herself on a boat a shortdistance from shore at the time of her death. If her memory was of being drowned in aviolent storm while at sea, she would notconsider the placid Pacific as anything tofear. She regrettably may not have consid-ered the combination of booze, plus rage, plus a calm ocean to be dangerous. Unfor-tunately, they were. Note that Scheat, at 28Pisces, trine to Sun-Mars-Pluto, gives deathby drowning. In sum, we have malefic starsat the end of Taurus, Leo and Pisces.

Having arrived at an examination ofNatalie Wood’s death, our first considerationis to consider if it was a timely death, andfor that we go to Abu ‘Ali al-Khayyat andhis Judgements of Nativities.

In Natalie’s chart, the Sun, in the 10th,angular, and conjunct Mars, the triplicityruler, makes the Sun hyleg, or giver of life.

The Alcohoden, or giver of years, willbe a planet that rules the sign, triplicity, faceor term of the hyleg. In Natalie’s case, theMoon rules Cancer, Jupiter is exalted, Marsis the triplicity ruler, Venus has the term andthe Moon the face. Of these, the conjunc-tion with Mars takes precedence.

Mars angular gives 66 years. We thenadd the lesser years of Venus and Jupiter ifwe find them conjunct, sextile or trine, andsubtract the lesser years of Saturn if we findhim conjunct, square or opposed.

In this case, Venus, which is weaklyplaced both by sign and house, is too farfrom orb to be sextile. Jupiter is only barelyin Pisces, while Mars is at the end of Can-cer, which does not make for a trine. One

then finds Saturn in square and deducts hisleast years, which are 30, to get a life of 36years. Natalie Wood in fact died at age 43,which is seven years in excess of expecta-tion and makes me wonder if the calcula-tion could be better done. On the other hand,if one notes the orb from Mars to Saturn (10degrees), which is wide, one might have ananswer there. It is distressing that in NatalieWood’s chart, we can see, with hindsight, aprevious death by drowning, as well as a likelydeath by drowning, and at an early age. I stressthis is hindsight, but it is still creepy.

Natalie Wood’s body was discoveredfloating in the water at 8:00 am on Novem-ber 29, 1981. You will note the MC at thatmoment was exactly conjunct Natalie’s as-cendant. Progressed Mars was at 26 Leo,exactly conjunct Alphard. The progressedMC was 25 Leo, bringing both it and Marsto the fore. Transiting Jupiter was exactlytrine to itself in Scorpio, and opposed natalMoon at 0 Taurus. Scorpio is the sign offire water, which is booze. Jupiter had justarrived there, which would imply Wood’sintoxication was sudden. Jupiter oppositethe Moon, Jupiter was looking the other wayand so not able to protect.

The other benefic, Venus, had a similarproblem: At 23 Capricorn it was opposingNatalie’s placements in late Cancer. It wasalso heading straight into the south node, which drained it of any possibility of beinghelpful.

In the chart of the death, Neptune in Sag-ittarius rises, which in this case indicates mis-direction, arrows of inquiry that are fired thewrong way. Transiting Mars had passed overNatalie’s Neptune a few days prior, whichindicates illness or mental confusion.

In late 2011 the inquiry into her deathwas reopened, the decision — so far — hasbeen to reclassify the cause of her death as“indeterminate.” It has now been concededshe died after a violent argument with herhusband, Robert Wagner. Know that LosAngeles is a corrupt town. If you are in goodwith the LAPD, you will never be named aguilty party, but if you are not in favor, aswas the case of Michael Jackson and O.J.Simpson, you will be hounded forever. WhatRobert Wagner’s relationship with the policemay be I do not know. I am going insteadback to Carter, and his notes on suicide.

The urge to kill oneself, says Carter, isshown by violent afflictions to one or bothluminaries, such as Sun conjunct both Marsand Pluto. He also cites aspects to the lordof the 3rd, which is here Jupiter, which hasout-of-sign inconjunctions to Mars and

Pluto. Carter then says heavy Saturnian af-flictions, which here include the Saturn-Mars mutual reception in signs of debility, and Saturn’s squares to Sun, Mars and Pluto.Carter says Jupiter is often ill-placed. Wefind it here hiding in the 5th, which it hasno association with, and a long way fromthe 6th, with which it has little natural affin-ity. Carter also cites Uranus, which inNatalie’s chart is in the 8th, the house of death, and in the same sign as her Moon, which wantsto be in the 8th. Did Natalie have a deathwish? There was at least one previous attempt, shortly after finishing The Great Race. Whatother attempts she may have made are notknown, at least not to me. Could the recentinquiry have found evidence for suicide, which has been suppressed from respect forthe family? If there was a note, did RobertWagner hide or destroy it?

PEOPLE take up professions for allmanner of reasons. Sometimes theyhave an inner compulsion to actually

do what they profess, but in many othercases, one’s real interests lie elsewhere. While it may appear that Natalie’s motherhad made her daughter an actress despiteherself, Natalie in fact never rebelled. Atthe birth of her first child she retired, whichis to say that being an actress is a youngwoman’s profession and that roles were be-coming scarce. Only a few women continueon into their 30’s.

If in a previous life Natalie Wood en-dured a nasty death, then her actual profes-sion, which she shared with all those whosuffered similar fates, was to come to gripswith herself. Until such time the world wasat best a distraction, at worst a positive nui-sance. Unexpected external events couldeasily upset what was probably a delicateinternal balance, with unfortunate conse-quences. When I look at the results of un-happy death, it is all the more reason to notkill, not murder, not execute, not have wars, and to minimize unhappy accidents, such asthose at sea, to the greatest degree possible. For every person who dies will be bornagain, and every person who dies unhappilywill carry that memory, like a two tonweight, every day of his next life. Oftenwith most unfortunate consequences, bothfor himself, and for those around him. I havealways been in favor of the abolition of capi-tal punishment and strict controls on deadlyweapons, but as eagerly as the world embracesdeath and murder, I am not hopeful.
