I not only wanted to set the many charts in the book, I also wanted marginal notes to explain – or decipher – the book’s many obscure pas- sages. I wanted a book that could be used. But times were increasingly hard. Inter- est in the book, aside from a small number of hard-core, was slight. I found I was spending 1-2 years on a $60-$70 book that would have few sales. I set the book aside and turned my attention elsewhere. I have lately been encouraged by a Ya- hoo Vettius Valens group that is slowly coming to terms with it. I have also decided to take my own advice and instead of pub- lishing a single 700 page book, to instead break it up into three smaller books for about $30 each. MarilynMARILYN MONROE was born

June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles. Her birth time is said to be 9:30

am and, according to AstroDataBank, thebirth certificate itself appears in The Curi-ous Death of Marilyn Monroe, by RobertF. Slatzer, from 1975. Note that Monroe’sWiki page displays a 1955 copy of the BC(which has no time) which turned up in a1981 article about the death of her purportedfather, Edward Mortenson. This is anothercase where more information is needed. Doany of you happen to have Slatzer’s book?

A birth at 9:30 am gives Marilyn 13 Leorising, Taurus on the MC. You already knowthat I’m going to challenge that, I would nothave brought it up otherwise. And since Iam, let’s go by the book, and as I have a lotof them about, let’s start with Jodie Forrest’sThe Ascendant, Your Rising Sign. (It’s justgot itself a new cover, yay!)

At 9:30 am, chart ruler Sun is found inGemini in her 11th, conjunct Mercury, alsoin Gemini, less than four degrees behind it.According to Jodie, when the ruler of the1st is in the 11th,

Cultivating groups of sane and centeredallies would be helpful. These Leo ascen-dants should avoid over identifying with anyone group, however, and should resist peerpressure to pursue goals that lack appeal forthem personally. (pg. 127)

Next, The Only Way to Learn Astrol-ogy vol. 3, by Marion March and JoanMcEvers, both of whom have passed. Rulerof the ascendant in the 11th:

You can be quite venturesome, even dar-ing. . . Often this is the placement of thetrue humanitarian who serves in some largeorganizational capacity to help others andlead the way. Pope John Paul II is a goodexample. . . (pg. 14)

For another book, let’s go to Rising SignOverlays, in The Astrologer’s Handbook,by Sakoian and Acker. From the Leo sec-tion:

Gemini on the Eleventh House Cusp:Leos choose as friends people who are in-telligent and ingenious, whose ideas can helpthem attain the power they seek. They culti-vate diversity and intellectual stimulation intheir friendships. (pg. 64)

Alan Oken, on Sun in the 11th:[A] need to integrate oneself with a larger

collective. This person imparts an interest inpublic work and participation in organizationsand group activities. It gives a certain ideal-ism and an approach to life which is often in-novative and wide in scope. (pg. 323)

The group association will in every casebe done from a point of view of Sun inGemini. Oken describes Sun in Gemini as,

[A] desire to express the self through con-stant variations in style and the pursuit of in-tellectual stimulation and growth. (pg. 301)

And it’s not too hard to unpack these vari-ous points of view, as they are all based onstandard astrological symbolism. The 11thhouse represents the area of life dealing withgroups and associations. The Sun is life en-ergy itself. Its house placement is where wewill naturally gravitate. This is reinforcedwhen Leo is rising, as we will see whatamounts to a natural leader emerge. WithGemini as a foundation, we could very wellhave a fast-talking demagog.

If this did not describe Marilyn herself, itwould describe the men (ruler: Sun) who sheassociated with. She is compelled to have apartner, since both the Moon and Jupiter arein her 7th house of partnerships. The housein which the Moon is found is where we seekemotional refuge. Moon in the 7th, Marilynwould find comfort with partners. Moon incollective Aquarius, she would have lots ofpartners and not be particular about any oneof them: The Moon’s variability combiningwith Aquarian indifference.

These men would generally be shiftlessand evil, since the Moon’s ruler, Saturn, is ret-rograde in Scorpio in the 4th. They would alsobe daddy types, since we find fathers in the4th. Saturn in Scorpio in the 4th in a woman’schart can indicate a rather nasty father.

And now you are scratching your headsand saying to yourselves, gee, Marilyn hadall these depths we never knew. Thank-you,Astrology, for your insight and information!

When you should be saying to yourself,Astrology is rubbish! This is not the sexpotthat Hugh Hefner put in his first Playboy andwhich became the no. 1 sex idol of all time.Or at least since Cleopatra.

The finishing touch to this particular fan-tasy is to find out when she dies. Sun in the11th is hyleg, or giver of life, there is no bet-ter choice. It is ruled both by Mercury, rulerof the sign as a whole, and Jupiter, ruler of

THE Diurnal Chart is a one-dayTRANSIT chart set for a person asthough he were born that day,

therefore we combine his original birthtime, latitude & longitude, with the datefrom the CURRENT ephemeris. Work onlythe Moon & any fast planet changing Signs, and use the original Constant Log.

During those years in which the regularprogressions signify activity confirmed bythe month-by-month Moon, we want tonarrow down the probable day of theactivity to a specific date or diurnal transit. That specific date will usually coincideapproximately with a strong lunation (Newor Full Moon) that aspects the Ascendantin the natal chart – but it must also conjuncta natal or progressed planet to cause anevent. In this work, the Full Moon isapparently the more potent one.

Using Chart #13, pg. 71, this man’sregular progressed year 1956 broughtMercury to 13 Pisces square to Venus. Itwould be important because Mercury rulesan angle – the family–4th: it would beunfortunate because of his Sign position (inhis fall in Pisces): it would be unhappy anda loss because of the square to Venus, andas she is in the 6th it would involve anillness – but not his own, since theprogressed Mercury does not afflict theAscendant. It affects someone in the familybecause he rules the family–4th, and thatis the house to read in the Diurnal Chart. This is our method of reasoning.

PersonalAppearance

PERSONAL appearance is one of themost difficult matters to judge from ahoroscope as it is modified by many

factors. The following are the most important

general rules:—1. The personal appearance is denoted

primarily by the rising sign or Ascendant &is modified by the sign containing the rulerof the Ascendant. The rising decanate shouldalso be observed as that often exercises aslight modifying effect.

2. Rising planets modify the typicalappearance of the sign, and a planet on orvery near to the Ascendant is always of greatimportance.

3. Planets exactly aspecting the Ascendantare important and introduce modificationsin accordance with their own natures & signpositions.

4. A sign containing three or more planetsusually influences the appearance.

In judging of appearance in practice lookfirst to the rising sign and rising planet (ifany) then to the ruler of the Ascendant, andlastly to planets aspecting the Ascendant. The typical appearance given by each signwhen alone is as follows:—

ARIES. Body. Medium height or over;lean; spare; wiry; long neck; strong, thickshoulders; fingers often short & thick. Headround, short, held erectly. Face long, withhigh cheek bones & broad temples, taperingto a narrow chin; often with a mark or scar;upper lip often long; sometimes lips project& underlip is thick & hanging. . .

Summary of delineationfrom Interpreting the Eclipsesby Robert Jansky

Summary of delineation

IN this chapter I have outlined to youall of the astrological and astronomicalfactors relating to solar eclipses that I

consider to be of the greatest importance. These are summarized below. In the follow-ing chapters we shall take up some of theseindividual factors in much greater detail.

In analyzing the eclipse, you should askyourself the following questions:

In which house in the horoscope understudy does the eclipse fall? What are thekeywords for this house polarity?

Does the eclipse fall in conjunction or oppo-sition to a natal point in this chart (orb ±5O)?

To what Saros series does the eclipsebelong? What is the basic nature of thisseries as determined by where the firsteclipse in this series occurred?

Does the eclipse fall in conjunction tothe position of one of the fixed stars? Whatis the basic nature, astrologically, of thisfixed star and what planet is its ruler? Wheredoes this planet fall in the horoscope?

At the exact time of this eclipse, wherethere any fixed stars just above (±5O) theeastern or western horizon? What is thebasic nature of these fixed stars?

Does the eclipse have a planetary ruler(does it fall within a ±5O of some planet’stransiting position on the date of the eclipse)?

Did the umbra of this eclipse pass overthe geographical area in which the indi-vidual under study either lives or was born?

Was the eclipse itself partial, annular ortotal? What is your overall assessment ofthe strength of this particular eclipse uponthe life of this individual?

For what period of time will this particu-lar eclipse affect the life of the individual?

All of these questions are important! Youcannot do an in-depth investigation of anyeclipse until you have answered all of thesequestions. — Interpreting the Eclipses,by Robert Jansky. In stock. Buy!

IHow PlanetsCrystallize

— Medical Astrology, by Heinrich Daath.Buy.

THE Sun not only contains the life-force of the universe it illuminates, but contains in itself all the powers

and qualities specialized in the other planets. Each of these latter abstracts from the foun-tain-head certain properties, transmittingthem in modified form to our earth sphere, and, without doubt, to the remaining bodiesof the solar system.

With the method by which this is broughtabout we have nothing to do here. It mustsuffice that we are in the possession of theultimate facts resulting from this selection, forwarding and interchange of stellar cur-rents. According to Sanskrit writers GrahaShakti or planetary energy is principally sentto the earth in the form of Vidyut Shakti orsolar energy.

Given the indices of these nine centers(Sun thru Neptune)—the individual and typalcharacters of their influence—it is really nota difficult matter for the philosophic mind tofollow and trace them throughout organic andinorganic life. For we must remember thatnot only ourselves but the whole of animateand inanimate nature is acted upon. Manyforms of matter and spirit are concerned, andreaction will assume appearances both var-ied and diverse, but the essential and intrinsictraits will never be effaced. Each planet willhave to function in materia crassa, in media, and in tenuissima, and we must be prepared torecognize the gem by the sparkle of the facet.

[As an aside, I am struck by how much this text, from1914, presages the recent earth-as-crystal idea upon whichI have built an entire astrological theory.—Dave]

Let us take Mars. The basic forms of themartial action are centrifugal, inflammatory, intensive and poignant.

both the term and the face, but as the Jupiterrulership is a wide trine while Mercury is atighter conjunction, the nod goes to Mercury.

From Abu ‘Ali Al-Khayyat – confirmedby other old sources – we find Mercury in asucceedent house gives 48 years. It is notconjunct, square or opposed to Saturn orMars, so there are no deductions, but it iswidely sextile to Venus and widely trine toJupiter. Venus would give an additional eightyears and Jupiter twelve, but I will disallowboth because the orbs are far too wide. Ad-ditionally, Venus is debilitated in Aries. Ju-piter does not like Gemini. Making 48, not68, the final answer.

Which would be a death in 1974. Whileit is not uncommon to live three or even fouryears beyond the calculation, I have neverseen a death premature by a dozen years. Callthis calculation creepy if you want, but itworks. This is the real astrology you havealways wanted, warts and all. Be brave anduse it.

Marilyn Monroe died on August 5, 1962,at the age of 36.

A couple of years ago when I stumbledon the problem of Marilyn’s length of life, Ipresumed the problem was a fudged birthyear, which is common, especially in Holly-wood, where actresses are often graded bytheir age alone, which is horribly cruel. Ipresumed the time was right, as who wouldmess with that?

So I subtracted 1, 2, 3 years from her age.Nothing. Then I thought, suppose she – orthe studio – had been crafty, like Nancy Re-agan, and had added years to her age to throwoff the astrologically nosy. So I added 1, 2,3 years. Still nothing. (Nancy is said to haveadded one year to her age. Ronnie is said tohave subtracted one. You will in fact get abetter read on those two if you make thoseadjustments. Which I got more than 20 yearsago from the late Emma Belle Donath, amarvellous Gemini. Who, I believe, guessed.)

INSTEAD, I made a stab at 12:30 pmand to my surprise, liked what I saw.Virgo rises, the exact degree is not im-

portant at the moment. There was a certainVirgo fussiness around Marilyn. Once shehad tasted success as an actress, she was dis-satisfied with her lack of training and soughtclasses. Once trained and again on the set,she would insist on take after take, to pleaseherself.

There is in a very mutable Virgo-Mer-cury-Gemini-9th house air about Marilyn, acertain search for an identity. The first photowe have of her, age 19, shows a square-

jawed, curly brunette which can hardly berecognized. Compare that to Anrias’s Tau-rus decanate (20-30O) of Virgo rising. It isalmost the same face:

even you take your clothes off and pose nudeto make ends meet. You do whatever. I haveheard it said that Marilyn only posed formarried photographers, which I think an ex-cellent rule, having met some of the unmar-ried ones years ago in New York.

This is a mutable sign rising, not a fixedone, ruled by a variable planet in a mutablesign in a cadent house. Change is all sheever knew.

A cute face and the willingness to posenaked got her tagged as “sexy.” And youcan see the gears engage. Virgo rising, Mer-cury in Gemini, there is a willingness to adaptoneself that Virgo then uses to pose as a pre-tend virgin. Creating sex appeal and high-lighting it both at once. Marilyn’s sexinesswas an act, her best one of all.

Does this sound like Doris Day, fouryears older? Well, yes it does. You will noteDoris’s Virgo rising, Moon in Gemini.

The difference between the two women,so far as Mercury, ruler of their ascendantswent, was that Doris’s Mercury was debili-tated in Pisces, late in the 6th. She did notconcern herself about being smart, just memo-rizing her lines. With her Moon opposite Mars,Doris fought off unwanted attention and even-tually left the trade because of it.

With ruling planet Mercury in Gemini,Marilyn was gifted with brains, but, stuck inthe 9th house, she could make no good useof them. Mercury in the 9th is out of its ele-ment, forced to deal with a Jupiterian scale

Now think of someone who survived anhorrific childhood (if reports are to be be-lieved) and who, age 19, seemed to have littlethought about herself or her future. She andher husband, James Dougherty, had beenmore or less coerced into a marriage of con-venience, he had joined the merchant marineand she was trying to make a go of it as bestshe could. That the marriage quickly fellapart is neither surprising under the circum-stances, nor atypical of many who marry atan early age.

The important detail is that Marilyn, throughout her life, adapted to circumstanceas best she could. From half a dozen differ-ent last names, to perhaps more childhoodaddresses than even I had (and I had a lot). You do what you have to do to get by, and in1945 she was working at a munitions factorywhen she was photographed, which started amodeling career. To be a model you shoulddye your hair a thrilling color (initially red, eventually blonde) and when the work is un-

which overwhelms it. Mercury in Gemini inthe 9th is like trying to compete with stento-rian speakers. Makes no difference howwell or what you speak about (Gemini), youwill not be heard. The 9th house is so muchLOUDER than Mercury could ever be.

In Marilyn’s chart, for the first time wenotice that her Sun and Mercury have noclose aspects. Which especially strandsMercury.

The result was the classic “dumb blonde.”Which was what Marilyn was taken as.People who knew her were surprised howsmart she was. She was simply unable toexpress it: A good planet in a bad house.

CHILDHOOD

AT 9:30 am, at 12:30 pm, not evenat 9:30 pm (the old am/pm switch)can I find a house-based justifica-

tion for her horrifically bad upbringing: un-stable mother, absent/unknown father(s), fos-ter homes, ward of the state, attempted adop-tions, molestation, etc.

The source instead was a grand trine inwater signs, comprising North Node/Pluto inCancer, Saturn in Scorpio, and Mars/Uranusin Pisces. It is said, by Carter and others, that grand trines have traditionally been heldto be evil and when we see these judgmentswe should set aside the conclusions and tryto work things out for ourselves.

A trine is a tool we have at our disposal.A grand trine is a lot of tools, amounting to ageneral ease in life. When things are easy

we tend to get lazy. As we get lazy we startto feel entitled. As we feel entitled we stopdealing with the world as it is and start tolive in a private fantasy. Which means weare less connected with reality, but, the trinegiving so much ease, we never quite come toour senses. The result is a wasted life, or anevil one, because if we act out, the grand trinemeans we will probably never be held ac-countable. Ergo, grand trines are to beavoided. Ipso facto, what is to be avoided istherefore evil.

But this presumes the planets that makeup the grand trine – at least three of the ten –are more or less neutral. In Marilyn’s case, all four are malefic on the face of it. In wa-ter signs they are unhappily emotional, but, critically, Sun, Moon and chart ruler Mer-cury are all outside of it in air and will there-fore stand apart and view the grand trine froma distance. Which is to say that Marilyn wasnot destroyed by a bad childhood, as hers didnot touch her fundamental identity. Thosescarred by a bad childhood – see James Dean– tend to act out.

Instead, Marilyn Monroe is surprisinglyrational and unemotional. She came to pub-lic attention shortly after her 19th birthday. With the chart of Marilyn Monroe we havetwo independent planetary configurations, both built around trines:

There is the grand trine of Mars/Uranus,Pluto/node, and Saturn, which, as none ofthe planets are lights nor the chart ruler, rep-

resent her external world. Then there is the Sun/Mercury trine to

Moon/Jupiter (wide), which, as it containsboth lights as well as the chart ruler, is herpersonal sense of identity. Her core. Which, with planets in Gemini and Aquarius, was,as I mentioned, abstract, intellectual, adapt-able, unemotional. With Jupiter, lucky.

Marilyn’s challenge was therefore to useher Sun-Moon-Mercury to somehow masterthe hostile environment (Saturn-Mars-Ura-nus-Pluto) in which she found herself.

The key factor will be the single clear linkbetween these two groups: The Moon/Jupi-ter square to Saturn.

Which functions on two separate levels:The personal: Moon square to Saturn.

This leads to isolation, depression and gen-eral emotional coldness. Reinforced by theMoon’s position in Aquarius, which addsaloofness. With a Sun that was both cadentand mutable, and a Moon which was cadent(the 12:30 pm chart), Saturn square the Moonwas the driving force behind Marilyn’s se-vere stage fright and an additional factor inher unhappiness with her work, leading totake after take.

On the other hand,Saturn square to Jupiter was an erratic

career and an erratic life. Great success fol-lowed by failure, the stress driving her on-wards.

Sun trine Moon, Marilyn had a strongsense of her own identity and that she wouldsurvive regardless. She survived a childhoodthat would have destroyed most of us.

But her world was hostile, had been hos-tile since birth and would remain so for herwhole life. Like as not, had she lived shewould have eventually become a recluse witha scholastic bent. But she did not.

This is not a setup for suicide, but ex-actly the opposite. Marilyn was a survivor. When the Sun and Moon are in trine there isan inner confidence that nothing can shake.A suspicious death in a hostile world wouldhint at foul play. So let’s look further:

It is suspected Monroe died between 9:30and 11:30 pm on August 4, 1962. Cause ofdeath was a massive drug overdose. If wetake the 12:30 pm birth chart we can makethe ascendant at death match the natal 8thhouse cusp by modifying the time on the birthand death charts to suit. Both are in mid-degrees of Aries. Death around 10:30 pmputs Scorpio on the 8th cusp, the house ofdeath. All of these are ruled by Mars. Marsin the chart as I have rectified it is in the 7th,indicating a man.

The natal 8th house is said to show when

we die. With Venus in the house, death wouldbe easy, but debilitated in Aries, it was not.Which again points us back to Mars, one wayor another.

The 4th house of the natal is said to showhow we die. Sagittarius on Marilyn’s 4thcusp, death by something foreign to her. Theruler is Jupiter, in the natal 6th, of drugs.Jupiter is itself ruled by Saturn, which is inScorpio, which reinforces Mars as a theme.Saturn is in the natal 3rd house. Mars was inthe death 3rd house, which was a mundaneMars-Saturn conjunction.

ABU ‘ALI AL-KHAYYAT andlength of life. Sun at 12:30 pm isstill hyleg, or giver of life. Mer-

cury is still alcochoden, or giver of years. Ina cadent house, he gives 20. If we add 12years for the wide trine to Jupiter, we get 32.Which is close to the actual 36 years. Weadd the years of Jupiter as moderns purportMercury to be exalted in Aquarius (the an-cients did not always agree) where we findJupiter. I have found the exaltation to be true,so far as the Astrological Ages are concerned,as nothing else will explain Aquarian Ageunisex, nor its cheeky intelligence, which be-gan in the 1920’s and which has persisted. We disregard the 8 years of Venus as sextileshave half the orb of trines and as Venus isdebilitated in Aries. I am not completelyhappy with the result, but I think 12:30 worksbetter as a birth time than 9:30. Where isthat mysterious birth certificate?

I am not an expert on Marilyn’s life ordeath, though I remember both. It is worth apassing mention that women bent on suicideare invariably careful to dress and pose them-selves, that they not cause embarrassment tothose who may find them. They do not dieprone on a bed, nor with a phone in theirhand. They may or may not leave a note.An excessively nervous suicide will be brightand bubbly in the hours and minutes immedi-ately prior. (See Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s stunningPresto: Allegro molto vivace from his last sym-phony. I have nowhere near the nervousstrength to write that. It is barely conceivable.)This is because the final decision having beenmade, the stress of the act is already behindthem and they look joyously forward to a newbeginning, whatever it may be. Premeditatedmurderers, on the other hand, often removethe victim’s clothing to hide their work.

If Marilyn was murdered, it was mostskillfully done. I am developing an astro-logical theory that says the guilty party canbe suspected by close aspects between hischart and that of the time of the act itself, what-ever it may have been. Which I leave to you.
