KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 7 - 2021 Thursday 18 th March, 2021 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT If any of the parents/carers of year 5 or 6 students did what I had recommended in last week’s newsletter and had a conversation with their child about the visit of the proactive police unit on Thursday, they would have been correct in thinking that the children didn’t have very much to say! Our apologies that on that morning, the visit had to be cancelled due to the policing unit being short staffed on that morning. Their next available date unfortunately coincided with our forthcoming incursion of the Alpha show, however be assured that the visit will go ahead and you will have opportunity to talk about it with your child/ren. I explained that the reason for the visit is in line with the national campaign against violence. Tomorrow (Friday 19th March) is the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. A frequently asked question is: ‘Is every conflict between students bullying? And the answer is: “Not all aggressive or harmful behaviour between people is bullying. While conflicts and aggressive behaviour need to be addressed, it is important to be clear when these behaviours are not actually bullying. The definition of bullying has three critical aspects: it is a misuse of power within relationships, it is repeated and ongoing, and it involves behaviours which can cause harm. All three aspects need to be present in order for behaviour to be called bullying.“ “Discrimination can occur as part of bullying, but can also occur in one-off conflicts or between strangers. Discrimination occurs when people are treated less favourably than others because of their race, culture, or ethnic origin; religion; physical characteristics; gender; sexual orientation; marital, parenting or economic status; age and /or ability or disability.” Our students come from a diverse range of backgrounds and we all benefit from belonging to our school and wider community. 45% of all Australians have been born overseas or who have had at least one parent who has. The most common languages spoken, after English, are Mandarin, Italian, Arabic, Cantonese, Greek, Vietnamese, Tagalog (Filipino), Spanish and Hindi. There are more than 60 indigenous languages spoken. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT All our students have a right to feel safe and respected in our learning environment and we will support and cater for all students within the charter of human rights and related legislation; and our school values and policies. We thank the parents who uphold and model anti-discrimination and anti- bullying values with their children. We also appreciate the support of parents and carers in helping to educate the children about verbal and physical violence; that it is never OK, and to teach the self-regulation strategies in order to prevent violence occurring. Celebration of diversity and anti-discrimination is celebrated each year on Harmony Day. (2021-Sunday 21st March). During this week the students have been talking about inclusiveness, respect and belonging in celebration of Australia’s cultural diversity. Please talk to your children about diversity and discrimination; how ‘everyone belongs’ and look out in next week’s newsletter for the children’s writing about their learning. Next Thursday 25th March, a youth community event is being held at Woodgrove Shopping centre after school to 5.00pm. After Class at the Grove will have free food and giveaways, activities and community groups. Please see attached the flyer with all the details. A reminder to all our community that the Annual General Meeting is next Tuesday 23rd March, at 6.00pm in the staff room. All parents are welcome to attend. Please join us for the presentation of the annual report to the community and for supper. ~ Learning Together

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

If any of the parents/carers of year 5 or 6 students did what I had recommended in last week’s newsletter and had a conversation with their child about the visit of the proactive police unit on Thursday, they would have been correct in thinking that the children didn’t have very much to say! CELEBRATION OF LEARNING

5 LAYTON

In grade 5 we have had an amazing beginning to the school year. We have taken on the senior school outlooks with gusto and taking on more and more of the expectations of a senior member at KPS.

Grade 5 Layton has built on learning within reading, writing and maths, and currently taking on an investigation of Colonial Australia. This topic is seeing students using investigational methods to build knowledge on a personal aspect of this time. Students will be examining aspects of Colonial Australia such as, colonisation, introduced species, The First Fleet, Exploration and Explorers, Penal Colony and the Gold Rush to name a few. We are hoping to create a presentation for all students to come and view the work of the students and the knowledge that they have gained throughout this subject.

What an amazing beginning with so much more to come.

Well done to my amazing group of students.

LOST LIBRARY BOOKS

If you found any school library books at home over the holidays could they please be returned to the school library ASAP.
