Banner Newsletter March 16, 2018 This week’s ideas for Helping Other Eagles Soar this week were: ~ Clean up your own trash at lunch ~ Help remind people to make good choices so they can be a good example to others ~ Make sure before you speak, what you’re going to say will be nice or helpful ~ Encourage others to keep going when they want to quit ~ If a student is not being included in a game you can invite them with you Tuesday's Unified Basketball Tournament went without a flaw thanks to the awesome support from coaches, teachers, students and other schools. Athletes from Grandville, Zeeland, Cedar Springs, and Zeeland Christian schools joined the BMS athletes in 12 different basketball pair-ups, lasting all day! We had over 125 guest spectators and fans, most of our BMS students, and 186 athletes from 12 different teams that participated in the event. Our 8th grade band performed the National Anthem and each of the school's fight songs. Thank you to all of the BMS students who made posters for the participating teams, who cheered on the athletes, who filled the stands, and who supported the tourney. Many of the students who attended the event pledged to #respect EVERYONE. This day allowed the Unified student athletes a moment in the spotlight and they will remember it forever. Thank you, especially, to the teachers and parapros who made this event possible, including Kendall VandenBerg, Heidi Newenhouse, and Ally Harder! We are proud of the positive climate this day brings to BMS. We also want to congratulate Rachel Kamer for memorizing 300 digits of pi! Way to go!

PLEASE VOTE TUESDAY, MAY 8

ANNUAL OPERATING MILLAGE RENEWAL PROPOSAL AND

SINKING FUND MILLAGE PROPOSAL

On May 8, two ballot proposals will come before Hudsonville School parents and community members.  The first is our annual Non-

Homestead Millage renewal.  This is an annual renewal voters have approved for the past 23 years and would generate approximately

$4.4 million dollars of operating revenue for our school district.  Of note, this is not a tax on primary residences and is not a new tax.

Additionally, the State of Michigan assumes all districts levy the full 18 mills. If voters reject the proposal, our district’s state aid is reduced

accordingly.

The second proposal is our Building and Site Sinking Fund.  Effective March of 2017, Public Act 319 expanded a district’s ability to utilize

Building and Site Funds for security and technology.  The House passed the bill in June, 2016 with a vote of 107-1, and the Senate

passed it 36-0 in October, 2016.  Even though Hudsonville has had this millage for the past 25 years, because the legislature expanded

the use, the ballot language identifies it as a new millage.  Of note, both millages will MAINTAIN our citizens’ current millage rate and will

not raise taxes. Previous improvements made as a result of this one mill levy have included additional classrooms to accommodate all

day every day kindergarten, roof repairs, boiler replacements, and land acquisitions.

Official ballot language:

HUDSONVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

OPERATING MILLAGE RENEWAL PROPOSAL

This proposal will allow the school district to continue to levy the statutory rate of not to exceed 18 mills

on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, required for the

school district to receive its revenue per pupil foundation allowance.

Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property

exempted by law, in Hudsonville Public Schools, Ottawa and Allegan Counties, Michigan, be increased by 18 mills ($18.00 on each

$1,000 of taxable valuation) for the year 2018, to provide funds for operating purposes; the estimate of the revenue the school district will

collect if the millage is approved and levied in 2018 is approximately $4,430,000 (this is a renewal of millage that expired with the 2017 tax

levy)?

HUDSONVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS SINKING FUND MILLAGE PROPOSAL

Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property in Hudsonville Public Schools, Ottawa and Allegan

Counties, Michigan, be increased by and the board of education be authorized to levy not to exceed 1 mill ($1.00 on each $1,000 of

taxable valuation) for a period of 5 years, 2018 to 2022, inclusive, to create a sinking fund for the purchase of real estate for sites for, and

the construction or repair of, school buildings, for school security improvements, for the acquisition or upgrading of technology and all

other purposes authorized by law; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and levied in 2018 is

approximately $1,410,000?
