Parents and carers - Do we have your latest contact details?

Before School ReminderYour support is greatly appreciated in helping us forecast our student enrolments for next year. If any families are unfortunately leaving the beautiful northern beaches, or if your child is currently in Prep to Year 5 and is NOT returning to TBSS in 2020, please email administration [email protected] with your child’s name and current class. This will help us enormously in predicting the number of classrooms and teachers we will require for 2020. Thank you for your support.

There are times when we may need to get in touch with you. Do we have your most up-to-date details? If not, please contact the school on 4057 1444 or email [email protected] so we can update our records. These details include your name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to let the school know if any of these details change.

If at school before 8:30am, students are required to be seated in CPA 1 until the bell. If parents/guardians are present with their children before school on play equipment or on the ovals, please note while under your supervision, parents are responsible for their child’s safety and wellbeing. Trinity Beach State School adheres to the sun safety policy No Hat, No Play. Large ball games are not to be played before school in our undercover areas or around buildings unless students are supervised by staff in the designated areas. Parents are encouraged to also promote these messages before school if accessing these areas. Staff on duty may provide families with gentle reminders of the school expectations and policies as we consider consistency very important. However, it is ultimately the parents’ decision regarding their child’s safety during this time. We appreciate parents’ support with upholding our school expectations.

Year 1 - You Can Do It!

Red light feelings Green light feelings

In Term 4, the Year 1's have continued to explore and identify their feelings; in particular sadness, anger and worry. The students have identified situations that make them feel these emotions. We have named strong anger, sadness and worries as ‘red light’ feelings and less severe degrees as ‘green light’ feelings. Students discovered that others can have the same experience but feel very differently about the situation and that is okay.

We are also beginning to learn about Rosie Resilience. We will discover how Rosie faces challenges: she knows how to stay calm, not fight or run away, calm down and wash off negative feelings.

We will continue to talk more about Positive and Negative Habits of the Mind and how we can change our negative thoughts/feelings and move to more positive thoughts and feelings.

assist children to understand their own strengths and engage in strength-based coping.

KEY FINDINGS

When parents adopt a strength-based approach, they seek to deliberately identify and cultivate positive states, positive processes and positive qualities in their children. In other words, parents are building up their children’s resources.

Although toxic stress has debilitating effects on the well-being of children, not all stress is damaging.

Positive stress has the potential to help children learn, grow and adapt if it is successfully managed.

Children are more likely to use their strengths to effectively cope with minor stress in their life if they have parents who adopt a strength-based approach to parenting.

THINGS YOU CAN DO

ü Parent authoritatively – encouragement, warmth, boundaries, limits, consequences.

ü Encourage independence in your kids. They’re never too young to be responsible for small things.

ü Role model resilience and other strengths, such as persistence, commitment, organisation, getting along.

ü Allow kids to suffer consequences and learn from them.

ü Teach kids stress management strategies and calming techniques – deep breathing, thinking of happy times, talking to a friend.

ü Have fun with brainstorming and alternative ways to solve problems.

ü Help build your child’s confidence and self esteem.

ü Accept your kids for who they are, make time for them and accommodate their interests.

ü Believe in your kids and let them know you do.

TAKEAWAY

FROM PROFESSOR MICHAEL BERNARDUNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNEFOUNDER, YOU CAN DO IT! EDUCATION

Strength-based parenting is a style of parenting that is warm, supportive, and authoritative. SBP connects children with their own strengths so that they will naturally use these to cope effectively with a stressful situation, rather than engaging in avoidance or aggressive coping responses.

Strength-based Parenting and the Impact on Children’s Stress Levels

ParentingWorksResearch-based parenting articles

Is there a relationship between Strength-based parenting (SBP) and kids’ stress levels and their approaches to coping?

Findings from a new study by the Melbourne Graduate School of Education at the University ofMelbourne, show that parents may make a positive difference on their children’s stress levels.

Strength-based coping is a particular style of coping where the individual makes the best use of their personal strengths, their skills, their emotions, and their family and social resources to deal with stress.

A registered psychologist and researcher conducted a community sample of Australian upper primary schoolaged children (aged 10-12) with participants recruited through a stress-management workshop run for children.

The study examined the role of parents in helping children to overcome and reduce their stress. The study focused on positive, everyday stress and adopted a positive psychology approach to the research inquiry. In particular, the study examined the role of SBP on stress levels in children.

Levels of stress were identified as toxic, tolerable and positive and given that stress results from an imbalance between demands and resources, SBP is likely to help children to deal with stress because it builds up the child’s resources (their strengths), fostering a better balance between the demands placed on the child and the strengths the child has to meet those demands.

The current results suggest that parents may play a role in assisting their children to cope with everyday, minor stress by parenting in ways that

POSITIVEParents & Children

Powerless Parenting

Exercising your authority It’s pretty clear from the above scenario who wields the power in this family. You’re no doubt shocked that a parent lets their child get away with not wearing a helmet, when this is a legality. Just because the kids are riding in the park and not on the road is no excuse for not exercising safety precautions and abiding by the rules. You’re probably wondering whether you even want your child to have a play day with this family. You turn to your child, who already has her helmet in place, praise her for doing so, and suggest to her friend to do the same. At this point, the ball is well and truly back in the court of the other parent, and you’re left wondering what will happen next.

I want my kids to like me For a variety of reasons, some parents today feel helpless to influence their children’s behaviour. When children are younger, some parents feel uncomfortable and anxious about exercising their authority because they know that if they do, their kids will get upset and angry and may reject them. As a society, we are more tolerant of excess and less tolerant of authority today than previous generations. There seem to be fewer role models in the public eye today who are prepared to advocate that it’s OK to say ‘NO’ to your kids and mean it.

Empowered or OverpoweredStrong-willed kids can be pretty smart when it comes to challenging and abusing the implicit authority of their parents. About the age of two, most kids push the autonomy button. The minute they feel challenged a battle of wills begins than can last through childhood and into teenage years. When parents react by overpowering their child, the child is likely to feel powerless and either give in or fight back to regain control, often through destructive or negative behaviours. Unless we, as parents, effectively and positively deal with power struggles from the beginning, kids will quickly learn to take control themselves.

Imagine this scenario. Your child has been invited to a friend’s for a play day. The friend ‘s mother has suggested your child bring her bike, as her child will have hers and together the girls can ride in the park opposite the house. You know that helmets are mandatory, so you pack it and drive child, bike, helmet and a healthy afternoon tea to the friend’s home. When you arrive, your child’s friend is already on her bike ready to go across the road to the park. She is not wearing a helmet. You ask the friend’s parent why and her response is “I can’t always get her to put one on….it always ends in her throwing a hissy fit…”

Firm parenting brings out the best• Control vs influence. Parental discipline is

not a matter of always getting our own way. Persuading our kids to live within our rules and values is preferable to insisting things must be as we want them to be.

• Decide which battles are worth it. Accept that you will win some, lose some, compromise when needed, and let the small stuff go.

• Give your kids practise at being powerful in useful and appropriate ways. Put them in charge of particular chores, encourage age-appropriate independence.

• Offer acceptable and reasonable choices. Rather than narrowing down the choice to only this or that, keep choices open but reasonable. An alternative choice should never be a punishment.

• No is often an invitation on the child’s part for us, as parents, to enter into the power struggle. Distraction, negotiation and side-stepping the issue, can provide the circuit breaker needed to work on the underlying reason for ‘no’.

• Work towards a win-win. This is probably easier when a child is older and can see the value of negotiation. But even small children can get the idea that yes, they can do this, and you can also do that, and everything will be OK. There doesn’t have to be a winner or a loser.
