In handing over the editorship to John Bennett after 55 issues, I can think of no one better suited to take on the job. As a former chairman, John brings to the task an incredibly wide knowledge of our membership. In laying down my pen, I must pay tribute to Nick Potter and Ken Dickenson, as well as to John Bennett, all of whom have been mines of knowledge of the DCO/International personali-ties. With their help and support it has been great fun to do the Newsletter.

Anon

All can now be revealed - Anon is Julian Wathen. The new editor wishes to thank Julian for his major contribution towards meeting the 1938 Club objective of “ keeping united the strong bonds of friend-ship maintained through many years of service” and also for his unstinting support for the Club both before and after his retirement. He will be a very hard act to follow.

As many of you will have heard, our Secretary Nick Potter had a nasty fall in October, which resulted in his spending quite a long spell in hospi-tal. We are pleased to say Nick is making a good recovery, but whilst in hospital he remained surrounded by BIPC papers. When visiting Nick’s bedside the new editor was instructed to consider amalgamat-ing the Newsletter with Club News and Views and a pilot publication is available on the Club website. The Committee would welcome your views on the proposed future for-mat.

On Armed Forces Day, as a vet-eran of World War II, MARIE HAR-RISON-EAST was invited by the Mayor of Enfield to inspect the Parade of Veterans and Cadets. She then rode with the Mayor to the Local British Legion Headquar-ters for a special reception. Marie recently retired as a Director of the London Elders Irish Forum.

Everyone enjoyed the Bush Bank-ers’ Picnic in Windsor Great Park in August and the rain gods were kind with the weather again. Among the 87 present KEN NICK-LIN had arranged a reunion of his 1959 X Course. Of the 15 on the course 7 attended the reunion with 3 late apologies. RON KINGHAM’s memorabilia and open air DVD show were enjoyed by all. The organisers JOHN and SONIA SMITH confirm the date for the next picnic as WEDNESDAY 11 AU-GUST 2010 and suggest that if anyone has memorabilia they would like to share they bring it along.

BOB MADDOCKS has pointed out that the caption to the photograph of Bamenda staff in 1963 was incorrect. He, not R J M Harding was seated third from the right. Apologies to Bob.

BILL AND HILARY KEATINGE have sold their beloved yacht “Rafiki”.

A sad but realistic decision, though the blow was softened by sailing for the month of July in the West-ern Med on a friend’s lovely 44 footer. The Keatinge clan remains scattered. Richard and family in Cambridge, doctor daughter Joanna continues to help in the battle against HIV in Zimbabwe whilst Suzanne and family are based in Dublin, but involved in NGO work in the Middle and Far East. Bill and Hilary expect to get used to the UK climate some day!

Former BBI Catering Services Man-agers JACK YOUNG, CAROLE STROUDLEY and ALISTAIR PURSER met up for the first time in 20 years to regurgitate old times. Sweet memories of the famous “20 Club” members were very much on the menu!

In 1999 NICK BRENTNALL went to Prishtina to be Managing Director of the Banking and Payments Au-thority of Kosovo (BPK), landing at a damaged Prishtina airport sur-rounded by tanks and military equipment. Following Kosovo’s independence the BPK was re-named the Central Bank of Kosovo and to celebrate their 10th anniver-sary, last October the Bank hosted a special international conference to which Nick was invited. This time he flew into an ultra modern,

welcoming new airport to find a modern banking system with a strong central bank and eight commercial banks. The economy is expanding, new highways, com-mercial buildings and houses are being built and there is a wide spread air of optimism for the fu-ture.

HOWARD HENSHAW, the Group Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Fylde Borough Council, has now been elected to the Lanca-shire County Council to represent the St Annes North Division of Lytham St Annes. Howard has also been appointed to the Board of Lancashire County Develop-ments Limited which controls two large business parks at Leyland and Lancaster.

Having been instructed after a second back operation not to sit for long, JULIAN WATHEN drove to Greece and back. We are pleased to report that he and Priscilla re-turned to England in one piece.

KATHLEEN and JOHN McDAVID celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with an informal buf-fet at their home in Dorset, a far cry from Freetown, Sierra Leone were they were married on 22 June 1959. Guests from DCO were best man CHARLES FARLEY and his wife MARY, ELIZABETH

and NICK POTTER, MERYL and DANNY LOBB (one of John’s Man-agers in Sierra Leone), IDA and EDRED BOWMAN, ANNE and DAVID RUMBOLD, ENA and ROGER EXALL, BETTY and TERRY FINNAGIN and LIZ and PETER WILLIAMS. Kathleen and John will be opening their garden for the National Gar-dens Scheme in 2010 on 25 April, 30 May, 31 May and 27 June from 2-5pm. Barclays people will be particular welcome on any of these days at Corfe Barn, Corfe Lodge Road, Broadstone, Dorset (Tel: 01202-694179. By opening their garden to the public Kathleen and John have so far raised £11,000 for various charities, mainly cancer care.

The Barclays CEO JOHN VARLEY attended the Club Sidmouth Lunch and talked about the challenges the Bank has had to cope with over the past year. In the last twelve months the greeting “Hello Darling” has developed a whole new mean-ing for him. It was an impressive presentation and it is fair to say those present left feeling pleased Barclays had avoided accepting the Government’s shilling and thus re-tained the freedom to manage their own business.

PETER NASH is the proud author of the recently published “The Devel-opment of Mobile Logistic Support in Anglo-American Naval Policy, 1900-1953”. The foreword was written by the Royal Navy’s Sec-ond Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Sir Alan Massey and the book is based on Peter’s research for his doctor-ate degree from King’s College London and as the Edward S Miller Research Fellow in Naval History at the U.S. Naval War College. Cop-ies ordered through www.eurospanbookstore.com/offer will receive a 20% discount if you quote “PETERNASH09”.

As part of their continued interest in Byzantine Church architecture, IDA and EDRED BOWMAN recently returned from the Adriatic coast visiting ruins and renovations in Greece, Montenegro, Albania and Italy. At Sarande in Albania the 11th century monastery is being rebuilt after 40 plus years of com-munist led neglect.

Two wheeled explorer DICK BRISTOW motorcycle/camped for a month on a 5000 mile odyssey through Europe to the Ukraine. He returned via the Carpathian Moun-tains of Romania, Dracula’s Castle at Bran Transylvania, Lake Balaton Hungary and the Kamnik Savinja

Alps of Slovenia. No other BIPC members were sighted en route.

ALLAN and VALERIE RUDDLE cele-brated their Golden Wedding Anni-versary in September with a lunch time barbecue for 24 family fol-lowed by family entertainment and tea for about 90 guests in the Sevenoaks Methodist Church Hall.

The first print run of “Ah ! This Nigeria !!” a collection of over 300 anecdotes collected by Alec Travers sold out and a reprint is currently in progress. The pro-ceeds from sales have been do-nated to the Ishahayi Beach School Foundation, Lagos State. Alec is considering a second vol-ume which will widen the scope of coverage to the Gold Coast/Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Cameroons. Anyone interested in obtaining a copy of Volume I, or wishing to contribute to Volume 2 can contact Alec at White Rose Cottage, Conghurst Lane, Four Throws, Hawkhurst, Kent TN18 5DZ email [email protected].

2009 marked the 50th anniversary of the Barclays International Golf-ing Society (BIGS). BIGS contin-ues to thrive, albeit Barclays international as a name disap-peared from the banking scene 25 years ago. If there are any BIPC

members who would like to play some lovely courses and meet up with fellow DC&O/DCO/BBI playing friends, please contact CLIFF KNOWLDEN e-mail [email protected].

MARK TEVERSHAM reports that the Barclays connection with FirstCar-ibbean International Bank is now even weaker following the recent departure of MARTIN GRIFFITHS (Chief Risk Officer) and JAI SOMA-RATNE (Head of Audit), the last two Barclays expatriate members of senior management who had transferred over from Barclays when the Bank sold its remaining shareholding in 2006. CHARLES PINK (CEO) left in 2008. The Barbados Barclays Pensioners As-sociation is remains strong and Mark uses the ATM at Sunset Crest which is still in Barclays blue!

NIGEL BUTTON returned to UK for 2 weeks at Xmas, but now going back to Egypt with Deb to crew for a friend on the Vasco da Gama Yacht Rally to India. We leave the Red Sea 3rd Jan and hopefully will get to Mumbai in April... So-mali pirates permitting, then on down the coast of India to Cochin. We plan to return to UK when global warming kicks in. (written

from N. Wales on Xmas eve... its cold)

On a family visit to Cape Town, signing in to play golf at Milnerton GC, ANDREA and JOHN BENNETT were asked if Mr Graham Atkinson from Botswana could join them for the round.  It turned out that Graham was the son of LAURIE ATKINSON, Botswana Manager in the 1970's and his business part-ner is JOHN ASHBY, formerly of West Africa and Botswana fame. Sadly Laurie and his wife Cynthia have both died during the past four years, but it is a small world.

OVER THE YEARS MANY MEMBERS HAVE INDICATED THAT THE CLUB NEWSLETTER INTERESTS THEM MORE THAN ANY OTHER BIPC AC-TIVITY SO PLEASE KEEP THE NEWS FLOWING. EITHER COM-PLETE AND RETURN THE EN-CLOSED REQUEST FORM TO JOHN BENNETT, GABLE VIEW, WELLES-LEY CLOSE, CROWBOROUGH, EAST SUSSEX, TN6 1QP OR E-MAIL YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO HIM AT [email protected]. Members who served in the old Co-lonial Bank territories of the Carib-bean and West Africa will have been particular saddened to learn that BILL DUNCAN had died. Bill was a member of the ever diminishing band of bankers who left the UK in 1946 to work abroad for Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Over-seas).  His first posting was to Grenada where he served until 1951 followed by spells in Barbados and the Bahamas.  Bill worked in New York from 1954 to 1956 and in 1957 was appointed Manager, Baha-mas.  In 1962 he left the Caribbean for West Africa spending a short spell as AGM in Lagos before becom-ing General Manager, Nigeria.  It was not until 1969 that Bill returned to work in London where he was appointed a General Manager of BBI, a post he held until he retired in 1978.   Bill Duncan was a banker of the old school who set high standards for both himself and his subordinates, playing a major role in the localisation of Barclays opera-tions in the traditional DC&O territo-ries.

Daily Telegraph, 18 December 2009 reported:-“Peter Telford Thompson, be-loved husband of Sheila and fa-ther of Nigel, died peacefully 15th December, aged 87 years.” The funeral service took place on 22nd December at Woking Cre-matorium.

Daily Telegraph, 3 November 2009 reported:-“Alan John Woodford, darling husband of Rachel, died aged 85 years, at home on 23 October 2009.”A private funeral service took place.

We have almost bro-ken the 500 barrier for members with access to our website.

There is a list of mem-bers and email ad-dresses in alphabetical order to the site under ‘Contact List’. This is updated every two months. Any new members who prefer NOT to have their ad-dress listed please email me.

Feedback from mem-bers indicates that the last amendment to the ‘changing password’ procedure is clearer for new members. Thanks to current members who offered ideas for improvement which has helped in the re-design. We continue to look at ways to deliver currently scanned arti-cles from newspapers with improved legibility and presentation on

the screen. We are moving forward with new ideas for making the overall presenta-tion of pages on the website to look more friendly and easier to browse. These will be installed in April. Any changes needed for installation will be ad-vised by email/through website.

Members continue to be interested in read-ing the “Newsletter” and “Club News and Views” electronically. This first 2010 distribu-tion will be done elec-tronically to website members and by post to those 1425 prefer-ring paper copies. Please let us know what you think about the new format of Newsletter No.56 and Club News. Only posi-tive ideas please!

A few reminders fol-low. Please let us know

if there are local events that you would like to advertise to a wider audience through MyEvents. MyMSN remains a use-ful feature when con-tact is needed with an Area or Regional Rep-resentative. MyLinks also offers access to support information with say, Age Concern etc., which is useful to senior members and Area Representatives alike. We are shortly going to take out mes-sages older than a year in MyMessages.

So, if you have not joined, we invite those of you receiving paper to join today. Please direct requests to me at: [email protected] with your name, email address and postcode (optional for road route to events via Google)
