Greetings everyone!!....2016 is well upon us and here at the Evergreen Club we are well into our 2016 program. The
holiday activities proved popular and functions were well attended. By all reports those that took in the Christmas and
New Years Eve activities were well fed and entertained and many thanks go out to very own catering volunteers who did a
marvelous job with all the preparation. The fi rst activity of 2016 was our Pancake Breakfast on Saturday January 9th. It was
very well attended and once again many thanks to our great volunteers that made it all happen. The breakfast produced a
nice little monetary return for our club. (Continued on Page 2)

CLUB NEWS
Our Special Events Committee have been busy planning our 2016 Special Events
calendar. The ever popular Trash or Treasure event will be happening on Sunday
January 31st in the Conference Hall. Hours are 9am to 2pm and table rental is
only $20. Regardless if you are a buyer or a seller, these sales always prove very
popular...it’s a giant market of stuff and you just never know what you might
fi nd.....remember that someone’s trash is always somebody else’s treasure.
The big Lunar Event called “Year Of The Monkey” is happening on Wednesday,
February 24th in the Conference hall. Doors will open at 11am and there will be
an outstanding Chinese Luncheon starting at noon. The luncheon will include a
wonderful selection of your favorite Chinese dishes. Entertainment provided by
Silk Road Music Duo (Vancouver). Tickets for this event are available at the offi ce.
Don’t forget that our Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday
February 10th in the Rotary Hall. It’s a time to receive and approve the Financial
statement of the Evergreen Club for the year ending December 31st, 2015. It’s
also the time to elect a new executive and all positions are open if you wish to put
your name forward. We will be electing a President, Vice President, 3 Directors
and a Secretary. All voters and nominees must have a paid up 2016 membership.
There will be door prizes for attendees.
At our January executive meeting we had continued discussion on distribution
of funds raised at Special Events. The existing ruling which was passed in 2012
was reviewed and some changes were made to update the rule. If you have
an interest in the changes I encourage you to read the minutes of our January
executive meeting which are always posted in the lounge. We also discussed
changes to the Special Events Planner which is the form used by groups or clubs
planning Special Events. The new form will have some new and some modifi ed
requirements.
I’d like to take a moment to recognize our January Volunteers of the Month,
Jeanette and Neil Harrison. They are both involved in several club activities and
we thank them for their contributions to our club programs. An excellent article
on this great couple was in the January Newsletter.
That’s about it for now...but I’d like to remind club reps that the February
Evergreen Club Committee meeting will be on the fi rst Monday of February as
the normal second Monday is a British Columbia Stat Holiday in February.....and
please attend the AGM if you can.....and remember that “the secret to happiness
is a good sense of humor and a bad memory”........adios...gk

We enjoyed a wonderful Christmas
luncheon for our last session of the
year. Our fi eld trip committee is busy
planning outings for the coming
year. For our education sessions,
we start the year with another hands
on session, this time focusing on
focus modes and focus points. We
will repeat the session with some
additions later in the year as we rushed
through so we could get home before
the snow got too bad. Upcoming
sessions include ‘All about lenses’ and
‘Introduction to Evaluation Photos’.
During the month of January, we are
displaying photos with the subject —
Musical Instruments. We are working
on our next display - Utensils, that will
be hung during the month of March.
Our Lightroom group continues to
meet before the regular meeting
and is focusing on the organizational
aspects available. We meet the fi rst
and third Tuesday of the month in
the Soroptimist Room at 1:00 pm
(or 12pm if you want to sit in on the
Lightroom session) and all Evergreen
members are welcome.

The Winter Snooker League is into
the last half of their season and there
are some interesting stats. At this
posting Teams 3 & 6 are on top with
85 & 83 points respectively. Teams
2 & 4 are just behind and are tied at
77. Team 1 has 69 points and team
5 has 57. Most of the games are
close and it’s too soon to have an
idea who is going to fi nish on top. “

This report starts on a sad note as we
lost a long time member in December.
Jean Dahle will be greatly missed. I

We have four new members and we

CLUB NEWS
Tuesday , February 9th &Tuesday, February 23rd, 20164:30 pm - 6:15 pm Rotary HallWow February already! I am thinking
Spring, so glad the time is zipping
along.
We are having such fun in our Club,
singing and playing. Every session we
are introduced to a new tune, but still
continue to play many of our favorites
from a previous get together.
If you are thinking you might like to
play the uke, come on down. We have
a loaner ukulele that can be signed out
for a couple of weeks. That way you
can give it a try, before you actually
go out and make the purchase. The
ukulele is a wonderful instrument;
only 4 strings, very light, and because
of it’s small size, you can take it almost
anywhere with ease.
Our music is sent to us via computer,
thus we can print off the sheets, or
study straight from the computer. We
do not have any paper in our sessions
as the music is projected onto a large
screen and we all view the same
thing. Our sessions start with songs
that have simple chords, and during
the latter part we progress to chords
that are just a bit more complicated.
The magic word is practice.......as
with any instrument we might take
up, the more you practice the easier
the chords will become. I can assure
you that it takes very little time before
you can successfully play many simple
tunes with the basic chords.
We welcome all.....come down and
listen, or sing along with us. Our only
requirements are a current Evergreen
Club membership, and a $2.00 drop-
in fee.

Do you have anyone in your family with
the fi rst name of ETHEL? I’m doing this
one because it’s my name and all my
life I have hated it. Now that I have
researched it a little I’m liking it a little
better. I’ll tell you all about it at the end
of the business section.
Our next meeting that is scheduled
for Thursday, February 18th is going
to have a change of venue. The
Soroptomist Room where we
usually meet every third Thursday is
unavailable so instead of changing the
date of our meeting we have decided
to do a fi eld trip instead. Mary Breer
have arranged to have a tour of the
Military Museum in Comox for us
with Jon Ambler being our guide.
We will be meeting at the Museum
(just outside the front gate of the
Military Air Base) a few minutes before
1 p.m. There is plenty of parking at
the Museum or across the road at the
Canex. If rides are required please call
me and I’ll see if I can arrange to have
someone pick you up. I do hope you
can come and join us in learning more
about our countries military history.
Now back to my name. ETHEL comes
from Old English and means “noble”.
It is part of many other names like
Ethelbert, Ethelred, Etheldreda, etc.
I was named aft er aunts and great
aunts, as it was a fashionable name
in the 19th century. Unfortunately, I
was born in the 20th century and it’s
not a common name these days. As a
young person I hated it. Fortunately,
it’s not as bad as my middle name but
that one I’m not telling even though it
means “spear & strength”!
Hope you can join us.

Genealogy Club 2:30- 4pm, Lower Native Sons Hall1st Tuesday - Focus on New Users3rd Tuesday - Focus on More Experienced Users
The iPad Club is a peer-led group
which is open to all iPad and iPhone
owners (all tablets are not iPads, if
yours doesn’t have an apple on the
back, it’s not an iPad).
On the fi rst Tuesday of the month we
focus on new users and encourage
those who need a bit of help with
the basics to come. We hope that
many of the more experienced users
will also come to help and share their
knowledge.
On the third Tuesday we switch to
slightly more ‘advanced’ techniques,
but all are welcome. If ‘new’ users
attend (and you are most welcome)
please remember that we don’t review
basics at these meetings.
Remember, our new home is in the
dining room at the Native Sons’ Hall.
You can enter from the upper parking
lot (the one that is on the upper level of
the Filberg Centre, not the one beside
the Native Sons).

Computer Club1pm, Soroptimist LoungeFriday, February 12, 2016Terry Hall was a welcome resource
at our January meeting providing
answers to our questions on computer
use, programmes and operating
systems. Thanks, Terry.
Security and scams continue as
a concern. Carole advises that a
member of the RCMP will speak on
this issue at our February meeting.
Scams mentioned were:
T-4 slips could be sent early by email
-- for a chunk from your bank account
or credit card, if you fall for this rip-off .
Also, there was a charge for an item
that hadn’t been ordered nor shipped;
thankfully, the invoice wasn’t paid
although at fi rst glance appeared to
be for an order that had been placed.
It’s amazing the personal information
that scammers possess and use to
confuse and to create trust.
More members have or are interested
in Windows 10 which is still an upgrade
but requires purchase aft er July 2016.
Two nursing students will be at the
Centre January through March 9th.
They may wish to attend our meeting
or interview us regarding activities,
etc. Please be welcoming as they are
seeking information to assist them to
help us when we need their care.
New members are always welcome.

Beloved Birthday Girl!
At age 8 she had her fi rst real piano lessons which she took for a year. At age
16 she went back for another year to learn popular music. Her teacher told her
that there was only one other student that she had taught that had the music run
through her like that. It turned out to be Dobie’s cousin! “It runs in our family,”
says Dobie, “My son’s a professional piano player too!” She has been a great
help with the ‘Memories of the War Years’ shows, playing for the Choristers every
week and assisting whenever the EG Drama Club needs her. She also plays
at nursing homes with the Choristers once a month, writes the EG newsletter
submissions and attends the committee rep meetings for them. Fellow Chorister,
Rick Forward says, “Dobie lives to play the piano, and we are fortunate to have
her in our group. It seems she never turns down a request to play for anyone. She
has an amazing repertoire of songs, a lively sense of humour and a million friends.
The Choristers would be lost without her!” She also volunteers her piano skills
for the Robbie Burns dinners at the Courtenay Legion. EG Club and Legion
member Ken MacLeod says, “She’s always there cheering us on, not only with
her inspiring music, but also with her inspiring personality and sense of humour.”
Dobie is also a gift ed painter. Her nickname stuck because she always signed her
artwork with the fi rst two letters of her name ‘Do Be’ (started by Harry Pruden).
It was a wonderful coincidence to notify Dobie of this honour on her Birthday
(notice her Birthday Badge in the pic). She wants people to know what a joy this
place brings to her and others. She feels right at home at the EG Club. “When
you’re busy on the piano, you don’t get a chance to socialize much.” She adds,
“I play the piano because I love it. Remember we are here to have fun. Enjoy!”
