Principal’s Message Dear Parents and Carers, What a wonderful school and community you have here! First, I’d like to introduce myself, my name is Mr James Wratten and I will be the Relieving Principal at Glenfield PS until Mrs Urry returns at the start of Week 5. Mrs Wilson had to return back to her substantive school and I know she thoroughly enjoyed her time at Glenfield PS. On behalf of all the staff and students I'd like to say thank you to Mrs Wilson. Athletics Carnival My first day saw the wonderful efforts by all the students at the Athletics Carnival at Campbelltown Sports Ground. It was a terrific community event with the majority of our students from K-6 participating in a wide range of fun and challenging activities under beautiful blue skies. Congratulations to all those students who tried their best and also to the students who will represent the school at the forthcoming Zone Athletics Carnival. The carnival was such a success due to the hard work of both the teachers and parent/carer helpers! A special THANK YOU to Ms Padam for organising this event! Education Week This week is Education Week at Glenfield PS. Monday was Open Day with assemblies, a P&C sausage sizzle and open classrooms where parents and carers could visit classrooms and be part of some of the high quality teaching and learning that happens everyday at Glenfield PS. Today Stage 3 parents and carers had the opportunity to see 'Genius Hour.' Genius Hour is a great way for students at Glenfield Public School to take part in project based learning and explore topics that interest them. Genius hour is a movement that allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom. It provides students a choice in what they learn during a set period of time during school. On Friday 5 August, Glenfield PS students are invited to participate in 'Jeans for Genes Day.' Students are encouraged to wear their favourite jeans to school and to donate a gold coin to raise funds for much-needed research into birth defects and diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, and a range of genetic disorders. On Friday afternoon teachers will be sharing their favourite stories with their buddy classes in the classrooms - a great way to end Education Week as the theme for 2016 was 'Shared stories, better learning, stronger communities'.

Thanks to all the teachers and families for supporting Education Week and a special mention to Ms Elmerhebe for coordinating all the events this week at the school Illegal Parking in the Bus Zone on Railway Street There have been numerous parents and carers parking illegally in the Bus Zone outside the school on Railway Street both in the morning and in the afternoon. Not only is this practice illegal, it is unsafe for all students and the buses that need to use that area. Both Campbelltown Council and the local police have been informed and there will be a greater presence on Railway Parade during drop off and pick up times around the school.

Bus Zone

This sign means that in the direction of the arrow or arrows you are not allowed to stop your vehicle unless you are driving a bus. Hours of operation may apply to some signs. This means restrictions apply for those times only. The current fines for stopping in a Bus Zone are:

Rule 183: (1) Stop in bus zone (not clearway or transit/bus lane)* 4 demerit

points and a $253 fine.

Notes from the P&C

Once again there is so much to share with

you.

The BBQ during Education Week was a

resounding success. Having to cook for

around 240 orders was always going to be

tricky – but was achieved with the wonderful

help of some of the school’s parents. Thank

you so much to these fantastic volunteers

who give so much of their time to make the

school a better place.

Thanks must also be given to the amazing

canteen staff who helped out when push

came to shove with regards to getting the

orders to the classes.

After having so many kids ask us, I can now

tell you that Shaky Friday will start again this

Friday (5th August). By the way, Biopak Pty

Ltd should be thanked for they have donated

2000 cups and lids; how fantastic is that?

As it takes a big effort to run these, we are

still deciding whether to run them weekly or

fortnightly. So keep an eye on the area near

the Sports Store and Welcome Wall on a

Friday afternoon!

To give you advanced warning, our Father’s

Day Stall will be held on Thursday 1st

September. Gifts will range in price from $1

to $10. Any leftover gifts will be sold on the

Friday morning, outside the Sports Store.

Kids, bring a bag labelled with your name to

take your gift home in. Anyone wanting to

help sell the gifts on the Thursday, please

meet in the Hall at 9 am.

Finally, the next P&C Meeting will follow the

Community Café to be held on Monday 15th

August at 9 am. I look forward to seeing you

there.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Glenfield Public School 2016 Academic

Challenge Winners

On Monday the 1st of August, Isabella Ross,

James Eccelston, Ameila Thornton and

Stanely Shaji Thomas attended Sarah

Redfern High School along with 25 other

schools for the 2016 Academic Challenge.

They competed in many critical thinking

challenges, including the Commercial Frenzy,

Bear The Load, Buzz Me In and Picture This.

Our Glenfield Public School students won two

of the four challenges which resulted in the

highly sought after overall win! Well done

Isabella, James, Amelia and Stanely for your

outstanding efforts, you really did Glenfield

Public School proud!

International Day is Coming!

The Glenfield P.S. community will be

celebrating International Day on

Wednesday September 14, 2016. (Week 9)

Please try to join us!

On this day, all students come to school

wearing clothes representative of any

country in the world and there will be a

parade, so start thinking about what you are

going to wear!

We are planning to have some visiting

performers, but we would also like to

showcase some of the wonderful talent we

have in our community. If you would like to

perform a cultural item, such as a dance,

please let me know. This can be students

and/or parents!

A feature of our day will be an International

Day lunch. We’ll be asking families to

provide a plate of food to share. We’re asking

food to be labelled with the name, country of

origin and ingredients. A special note will be

sent home, closer to the day.

Each class has chosen a country to study this

term. This year we would like parents to

have a quick tour of the 16 countries after the

luncheon.

Students will hear some stories from other

countries, during the afternoon.

As you can see, there are lots of exciting

things to look forward to!

Mrs Dunajcik
