The Year 7 Canberra trip has become a highlight of the Year 7 students’ educational experience. Our four Year 7 classes have just returned from their 5-day trip as part of their Civics and Citizenship unit. The girls approached this opportunity with great enthusiasm for what was an action-packed week, where they visited many of our nation’s significant cultural sites. They developed their knowledge of Australia’s federal government and legal system through visits to the Australian Federal Parliament and the High Court of Australia. They were excited to visit the Royal Australian Mint to watch money being made and learn about the history of Australian currency, along with many more unique experiences. The Year 7’s represented the school beautifully and we will no doubt see the benefits of this amazing experience in their learning in the years to come.

From The Principal (continued).

This is just one of many active collaborations between the year levels. This week 6LM and R-AH participated in a drama activity where the Year 6 students acted out their favourite children’s stories for the Receptions. All the students enjoyed the activity very much, and it was lovely to see the relationships developing between the girls.Year 12 exams conclude today, and our Year 12 students are essentially two-thirds of the way through their final year at the College. This cohort continues to impress us with their mature and confident approach to their studies, as well as their capacity to engage in a broad range of curriculum extension activities. They are leading by example, and we hope they continue to enjoy all aspects of school life in their final semester.

Year 10 and 11 students have participated in full-day retreats this fortnight. Taking time out from study to reflect upon their place in the world and their spiritual values is an important part of helping young people to maintain perspective. The beginning of Semester 2 offers the opportunity for renewed energy and direction, and we hope the students enjoyed the experience..

Wishing everyone a relaxing change of pace during the school holidays,

Ms Paddy McEvoyPRINCIPAL

The SIA (Support in Action) program is a special initiative building connections between the Reception and Year 6 students, which focuses on student wellbeing. The program promotes friendship and support between these year levels, through regular collaboration and planned meaningful, cooperative activities. It promotes a sense of community, belonging and fosters school spirit. For our Year 6’s, it acknowledges their leadership, responsibility and pride in their ability to be helpful. One of the most recent activities has been the Year 6 students supporting the Receptions with their sight words and reading before school.

PRIMARY MASS 2017

Last Wednesday 5 July 2017, the Primary School End of Semester Mass was celebrated by Fr Charles Gauci in the St Francis Xavier Cathedral. The theme of 'Care for Our Common Home' from Pope Francis letter Laudato Si (2015) reminded us to care for our world: all of creation including one another. Fr Charles asked us to all think of ways that we can fulfil this in our everyday lives by being a light for others: being helpful and respectful towards each other and caring for our environment. The Primary Mass choir led us in our celebration, Reception classes provided decorations for this sacred space with Year 3 classes involved in processions, Year 4 reading prayers, Year 6 as readers and Year 7 as ushers and setting up the sacred space and acting as ushers.Thank you to our Ministers of the Eucharist, Ms McEvoy, Ms Simpson, Ms Osborn and Ms Sofia, our altar servers, Rachael and Emily, and to all students and teachers for their wonderful singing and participation.Following Mass, the Primary Awards were c onducted by Primary Coordinator Ms Kellie Osborn. Certificates were presented to students by our Principal Ms Paddy McEvoy assisted by Ms Christine Simpson.

CELEBRATING 100 DAYS OF SCHOOL!On Friday 30 June, Reception classes R-KR and R-AH celebrated their 100th day of school at St Aloysius College. The students participated in a range of activities that centred around the number 100 including ‘What would you buy with $100?’ and ‘What will you do before you turn 100 years old?’. Students completed 100 exercises, came face to face with their 100 year old self and took 100 steps from the Redden centre to commemorate their 100 days of learning at St Aloysius. They were also set the challenge of creating a piece of artwork using the number 100. The day was a wonderful celebration of just how far each student has come since their first day of school.

This term, Year 5 classes have been learning performing skills as part of their drama program. Students worked on developing skills and techniques of voice and movement to create character, mood and atmosphere. In groups, students rehearsed plays and memorised lines. To celebrate their efforts, students performed in the drama theatre in front of students and invited family members.

It was great to welcome back to SAC the 'Salaka' Sharing the Spirit of Africa Interactive Drumming performers. This energetic group entertained the Year 3 to 5 students and teachers on Wednesday 28 June 2017. The show was highly interactive, a hands-on, culturally rich and informative presentation by authentic visiting artists from Ghana and West Africa. Over 200 drums were used so that every student could play an African rhythm, transforming the students into a percussion ensemble. The students were also taught a traditional African song to accompany the drumming rhythm and experienced African dancing. As well as being very involved, the students heard stories of African children growing up in the villages and witnessed traditional African dances as they are performed in Ghana.

2017 Catholic Schools Music FestivalSAVE THE DATE!

Tuesday 19 September 2017 (Week 3)Wednesday 20 September 2017 (Week 9)Venue: Adelaide Entertainment Centre

Times: 7.30pm - 9.15pmTickets: available in Term 3

The Festival is more than just a week of performances. It is a year of education!

Students from differing backgrounds come together and share social and emotional interaction in a positive learning environment. We are nurturing their spiritual growth and fortifying one of the many strengths that Catholic schools have to offer.

It’s about being the best you can be and striving for excellence toward a common goal. Sounds cliché?

It is! And it is very valuable to our young people.

In essence it is about being able to experience the journey involving a large scale professional performance in one of Adelaide’s most prestigious venues; the learning, the focus, the goal, the practise, the personal effort, the teamwork, the comradeship, the adrenalin, the exhilaration, the bond, the support, the love and the culminating spiritual growth.

In an effort to promote a wider recognition for this excellent event and to uphold the benefits to our youth, we seek your support. Come along to the Entertainment Centre in September and see what these students have been preparing for during the past six months!

Our Year 6/7 SAPSASA Soccer team played their third round knockout match against Highgate Primary School on Tuesday 4 July. The girls fought hard against a few strong players on the opposition team but were unable to come away with the win this time. Congratulations to all of the girls on their commitment to training and games and their team spirit shown throughout. Thank you to Mr Alan Brown for coaching the girls over the past term. On Tuesday 4 July the Yr 6/7 SAPSASA and a Year 6 afterschool Netball team participated in the SACPSSA Netball carnival at Priceline Stadium. The girls played 6 games each across the day, in which they demonstrated strong leads, good drives and some excellent defense. The SAPSASA team finished the day undefeated and had a lot of fun working together. The Year 6 team was also successful, winning 3 of their 6 games. A big thank you to Tanysha Lodge 8KO and Georgia Bergamasco 9SC for umpiring the teams and to Ella Molloy 10EH and Sophie Beaton 10EH for coaching the girls. Congratulations girls on your display of great sportsmanship and teamwork. Why is it important to be on time to matches and training?

• To adequately warm up as a team allowing players to physically and mentally prepare for the physical activity ahead.

• So the coach can implement their planned game strategy or training session and not have to make last minute changes.

• To allow the coaches sufficient time to organise the scoring and timing of games by the parents who are rostered on that day.

The Term 4 secondary sport nominations for water polo, lacrosse clinics, basketball, tennis, touch football and indoor volleyball are to be completed online. Students in Year 7-12 who are interested in nominating must access the Secondary Sport Handbook from the SAC website. SECONDARY SPORT CHANCERY LANE - MONTESSORI PRE-SCHOOL

It’s been such a busy, productive and interactive term here at Chancery Lane! Small groups of children have been taking turns to go on community walks on a weekly basis to some local services and destinations such as the all-time favourite Central Market, Adelaide City Library, the Botanic Gardens, Japanese Himeji Garden and Bonython Park. All these experiences were planned based on the children’s interests and their conversations on places in our community they would like to explore.

Another highlight during the term was a special visit from some Police officers with their police car. The children enjoyed having a sit in the car and then watching the flashing lights and listening to the sirens! The Police officers talked about their roles in keeping the community safe and the children even got the opportunity to look at their hand cuffs and batons up close!

ART NEWS

Currently the foyer gallery is showcasing examples of work from the Semester 1 Year 8-11 Visual Art and Design students. Please take time to come and view this diverse range of work from our very talented students. Highlights of the exhibition are the Year 10 Design students roof top garden designs, Year 9 perspective paintings, Year 11 landscape paintings and a wonderful collection of ceramic monsters created by Year 8 Art students. The exhibition will be on display over July in the school foyer.

Foyer Gallery Exhibitions

On Monday 26 June 2017, I attended the launch of the SA Refugee Week, Youth Poster Awards Exhibition, held at the Kerry Packer Civic Gallery, UniSA City West Campus. This exhibition celebrates the role and influence of refugees in our Australian community. One of our students Ruby received a commendation for her sensitive and moving poster titled 'Live as One'. She was one of only four Primary students from across the state to receive an award and we congratulate her on her effort and achievement. During the exhibition opening I was also delighted to catch up with an old scholar, Boadecia Pocz- Kitchen who is studying Art at the University of South Australia. Her clever and striking poster of a maze creatively captured the struggle of refugees. I would also like to congratulate all the SAC students who created beautiful artworks but whose work was unfortunately not chosen for the exhibition; Leila Young, Siena Kellerman-Clark ,Mia Young , Mika Ravell, Revathi Sathurrayar, Marisa Fyfe, Natalie Bellardino. Their posters are currently on display in the Art room.

Art Excursion to Study Contemporary Aboriginal Art

In the lead up to NAIDOC week, a small group of students visited the Art Gallery of South Australia to learn about Aboriginal Art. Helen Bullis who showed us a range of indigenous artworks guided us around the gallery. The girls found her explanations of the artworks entertaining and informative.

Students' Reflections

I learnt that Aboriginal Art is not just dot painting. Nikita Read 8KOI was interested in finding out that there is often a hidden story behind the main story. Maja Tongerie 9SCI loved the blue dot painting with the viewpoint from heaven. Sara Pacella 9NWMy favourite was the portraits of rich people and the way the artist showed his opinion of them. Cheyanne Noble 9AWI loved the tent installation, it was fun. Lily Butler-Bull 9VC

MILES OF LOVEIt’s been almost two months since I boarded the plane from Adelaide to Arusha in Tanzania. There are no words to describe what this experience has been so far, but one thing’s certain - a lot is shared between St Aloysius College and The School of St Jude. We’re both diverse communities with a commitment to delivering quality education. More than this, Justice and Mercy are our common values. Every child is treated equally at St Jude’s. They are bright, bubbly and attentive. At first glance, they appear carefree and like any Australian school kid. However, each one of our students and their families knows what it means to endure hardship. Thanks to our wonderful SAC community and the generous donation of $5000 raised from the 2017 Walkathon and on Mercy Day, one of the St Jude’s school buses will be maintained for the next twelve months. The significance of this donation can’t be overstated: SAC is literally easing the rough journey of some of Tanzania’s future leaders. Our bus fleet picks up students between Standard 1-5 (Reception-Year 5) every morning and drops them home again at night. Some of these students leave for school as early as 6.30am and arrive home as late as 6.30pm at night. It’s a blessing to wake up to the sound of chirping voices outside my bedroom window, as energetic children pour out of the bus and onto the playground, ready to begin their school day. Roads here aren’t well-maintained and can be dangerous, which is why bus maintenance is so important. Three days after I arrived, a different school’s bus traversing tough terrain through pouring rain veered off a steep road. 35 people were killed in the crash – all but three were school children. Through constantly maintaining our buses, we do our very best to prevent such tragedies – and I do mean we. SAC is more than a school community, it’s a vehicle for empowerment of 1300 girls in Australia, and now, for 1800 of Tanzania’s most exceptional, yet disadvantaged children. On behalf of everyone at The School of St Jude – thank you for walking with us and for us.

NATIONAL REFUGEE WEEKDuring Week 8 JAM took part in a number of activities for National Refugee Week. St Aloysius College has a long history of working with refugee communities and advocating for fair treatment of asylum seekers, especially children. On Tuesday 20 June 2017, International Refugee Day, students took part in a 'Detention for Detention', standing in solidarity with young people in detention centres. During this time the girls wrote letters welcoming refugees into our community. These letters have been given to students who are part of a tutoring group working with students from refugee backgrounds and are hopefully the start of an ongoing relationship between the communities.Senior students from JAM were able to make a trip to the Migration Museum and visited the memorial wall. This wall holds plaques that have been put up by different communities around South Australia to commemorate groups who have sought refuge here since the late 19th century. There are plaques from communities that sought refuge after World War 2, as well as people fleeing ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, Africa and Europe. This trip was a way for the group to reflect on Australia’s long history of providing aid and security for people seeking refuge.During the week, students worked to create a 'Wall of Simple Acts'. The girls came up with simple acts that they could take to help make others feel welcome. This was displayed in the courtyard so that all the students could share their ideas, as well as help to inspire others to take simple acts.

Penned reflections from Year 10 on Learning about HistoryAll Year 10 students attended a Referendum performance by Brett Hunt on Monday 3 July 2017. Below are students’ reflective comments:

Brett’s presentation gave us a clear insight into the history of the civil rights movement in Australia and America. We found his performance very intriguing and it portrayed the connections between music and history overall; this was very beneficial as it opened our eyes to the impact of racism then and now. Stella Atkins, Tully Hansen-Williams and Lara Kellermann-Clarke 10EH

Brett’s presentation was very informative and enabled us to understand the injustice and the disgraceful ways in which indigenous Australians and African Americans were treated. The cruelty and harassment, which occurred, is very important part of our history as it has developed the world we live in today. We still live in a society filled with discrimination. In the past, we have not been good listeners but if we stop and allow indigenous Australians to talk and share their ideas we can establish rights and defeat the barrier between the cultures of Australia. Phoebe Price 10EH

Brett’s presentation incorporated different styles of performance from story telling to music. His dynamic style introduced us to many different aspects of the American and Australian civil rights movements. He spoke of the importance history has to movements today, educating and inspiring new

people to stand with those who are still fighting to be heard. Brett highlighted the importance of listening to the experiences of the oppressed so we can find better ways forward for everyone. Louise Jackson 10EH

The presentation was an engaging and educational insight in to inequality and racial segregation within USA and Australia. His performance allowed the audience to be involved and connected making us feel as if we were reliving the historical injustices. The presentation shone a light on how important history is and that we should learn from the past whilst taking on new ways of understanding historical context in order to improve the future. His use of music, song and quotes further enhanced the performance by providing more depth and information. Sophia Briggs 10EH

Brett’s performance brought the study of history alive by using multiple techniques that benefitted the audience. Music played a major part in the performance as it allowed viewers to gain a deeper insight into the oppression during the civil rights movement in both Australia and America. The lyrics and the tone of the music was able to give the audience an understanding of the emotions prevalent in suffering communities of the time. He used his personal experiences to support his outlook on the period and made it more relevant. Overall, Brett’s performance was educational as well as entertaining. Ruby Roberts 10EH

The Primary school took part in an art piece, with each student creating a paper people chain. These chains have been displayed in the Undercroft as a reminder of this year theme: 'With Courage Let us all Combine'. This gave students a chance to create beautiful, meaningful piece as a community.

YELLAKKA YELLARKARRIEach year the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education team from Catholic Education SA offer a leadership program for secondary indigenous students. This program is designed to build self-esteem and promote the importance of culture and identity. This year five students attended from SAC.The students were given an opportunity to unpack their identity and challenge current social stereotypes. Working with outstanding indigenous role-models, Ernie Dingo and Jonathan Lindsay-Tjapaltjarri Hermawan, students investigated ways of making changes for a better future. Our students worked with like-minded peers to develop, challenge and extend their leadership qualities. The teachers from SAC who attended the program also participated in professional development, where they learnt more about indigenous culture and the role they play in promoting reconciliation in schools.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)From 2015, all government and non-government schools in Australia have been required to participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) on School Students with a Disability. The Data Collection provides all Australian schools, education authorities and the community with nationally consistent information about the number of school students with a disability and the level of adjustment being made to enable the students to access and participate on the same basis as their peers.

Students’ personal details are de-identified in the data collection and aggregated information is provided to Catholic Education SA who further de-identify and aggregate the data before providing the data to the Department of Education.

Parents/carers can decide whether they want their child’s information to be included in the Data Collection. Please notify me if this is your decision. There are no consequences for not participating in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data. Please contact Larissa Caudle, Special Education Coordinator if you have any questions.
