The June meeting of the Newcomb Secondary College Council will be

held this Thursday evening in the Language Centre.

Reports

Currently teachers are writing reports and these will be posted out

next week. Please sit with your young person, read through these

reports and discuss the teachers comments to assist in preparation

for semester two.

Miyazaki Visit

In week two of term three 2 students from our Japanese sister school

in Miyazaki are coming to visit. They will be here for just on two

weeks. In this time they will visit places of interest in the local area,

study English, and visit some of our classes.

Visit to Lombok At last week's College Assembly, Alex Potter and Jake Matthews did a

great job (at relatively short notice) in describing the visit to Lombok

and how they have all enjoyed and grown from the experience. This

Lombok trip has become a feature of our Indonesian Program for

students studying this subject in the Senior Years. Please see page 3

for report.

End Of Term 2

Friday 27th sees the end of Term 2, with classes finishing at 2.30pm.

We would like to wish all students, staff and community members a

safe and pleasant holiday period. Term 3 commences on Monday 14th

July.

FORMER STUDENT AWARDED A SCHOLARSHIP FOR

UNIVERSITY BY DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE

CONGRATULATIONS KATE

Congratulations to Year 11 student Kate Daglas who has been selected to

attend The Aspiration Initiative Study Intensive in Sydney from Sunday 29th June

to Friday 4th July. Kate is one of only 13 Victorian students to be selected for

this opportunity.

Growing up in Darwin you see the gap between indigenous

and non-indigenous people every day, but for me, it was

seeing some of the injustices faced by Indigenous people and

our legal system that made me decide to study law at Deakin

University.

It really drove me to want to make a change to the world and

to leave a footprint here. I want to show that Aboriginal

people can achieve great things given the chance of an

education, and with my law degree I want to provide greater

access to the legal system for Aboriginal people.

My mum and my grandfather are so proud that I’m studying

law at university, and also that I am able to spend a lot of time

with other Aboriginal people at Deakin’s Institute for Koorie

Education where I can strengthen my culture.

I study at Deakin in Geelong, but my Aboriginal country is south west of Darwin with the Marrathiel

people. It’s important to me that I always remember where I come from. The scholarship support I receive

helps me immensely with my accommodation costs and textbooks.

Before the scholarship I depended on my grandfather to help pay for my textbooks, which can cost up to

$600 a trimester – a huge amount of money for him. At the end of high school I also had to make the

difficult decision to leave home. The cost of accommodation is beyond my means as a student, so I am

staying in temporary share accommodation with other teenagers facing difficult circumstances.

The scholarship money means I can now have some financial stability, can pay for my own books, and can

start to make plans to move into a proper house.

I feel like now I can go on and do great things, not just for myself, but for my community.

YEAR 12 GENERAL ACHIEVEMENT TEST

On Wednesday of last week, all of the Senior students at Newcomb Secondary College, who are

currently enrolled in a Year 12 VCE subject, attempted the General Achievement Test (GAT). This

assessment marks a significant turning point for our Senior students, as the end of year examination

process draws closer.

Students are now able to check the dates for their final examinations, and should already be starting to

consider their plan of attack for this potentially daunting but highly exciting period of time.

Additionally, students should also be seeking support and advice from our Senior Years Team around

their goals and prospects for 2015.

To assist with the challenges that lie ahead, students are also reminded that the Year 12 Common

Room will be the site of an After School Study Session every Tuesday night in Term Three. From

around 3:15 onwards, senior teachers will be working here with preservice teaching candidates from

Deakin University to support the students in their preparations for major assessments, and all students

in Years 11 and 12 are welcome to attend.

As the students move into the final semester of their secondary school education, it will be essential

for them to be maximizing their learning opportunities within, and more importantly, outside of the

classroom.

INDONESIAN LANGUAGE & CULTURAL IMMERSION

PROGRAM 2014

The first weekend was spent resting with the host families. On Monday and Tuesday, we spent time at

SMAN1 school, learning and catching up on the school work. Tuesday evening it was time to return to Bali. We said our goodbyes with tears and hugs at Lombok-Praya International Airport. We touched

down at Denpasar and checked into Ari Putri Hotel in Sanur. On Wednesday, we spent time at Bali

Safari Park & Marine Wildlife. The students got to see the various wild animals and have a close

encounter with a lion and orang-utan. Our highlight was between the Balinese Traditional Dance

Lesson and the Cultural show at Bali Agung.

Thursday we enjoyed a cycling tour of the countryside,

The students admired the amazing view of Gunung

Kitamani and learnt about village life along the bike ride.

Everyone enjoyed the Balinese lunch served at the end of

the bike ride. Friday was a day of relaxation at the

Waterbom Park before heading to the airport for the

evening flight back to Australia. The flight was cancelled

but we managed to get home via Brisbane thanks to the

help of the ground staff.

SICK BAY

A reminder to all parents and students that if a student is feeling

unwell at school they should take the following steps:

1. Ask their class teacher to sign their organiser. 2. Take signed organiser to the School General Office where sick

bay staff will be notified.

If a student requires urgent attention out of class time please

report to the General Office.

At no time should students contact their parents to pick them

up due to illness or injury as the school needs to assess students

and give immediate treatment as well as record actions taken. Sick

bay staff will contact parents as required.

MINIMUM SCHOOL LEAVING AGE

Some parents may be unaware that in recent times the school

leaving age has actually been changed to 17.

The law governing compulsory attendance at school and the

minimum school leaving age in Victoria states that young people

from the age of 6 to 17 must attend school or an approved

equivalent, unless otherwise exempted.

Teenagers are now required by law to complete Year 10 and

until they turn 17, are to be in fulltime education, training or

employment, or a combination of these activities.

Our Newcomb Secondary team work very hard to assist

students to achieve a successful pathway into employment or

further education.

Your young person should be making an appointment with the

Careers Teacher, Mr Wight if they need support in exploring

options with regard to careers or further education.

ACU BREAKS DOWN THE BUDGET – The recent Federal Budget included changes to higher education

funding which will have significant implications for Australian universities. The Australian Catholic University

summarised the proposed changes that will affect students:

Universities will set their own fees – from 1 Jan 2016, universities will set their own fees for Australian

undergraduate courses.

The government will contribute less – from 1 Jan 2016, students will pay more towards the cost of their

degree, and the government will pay less. The Commonwealth contribution will reduce by 20% overall.

Extending the demand driven system – this system has been expanded to provide Commonwealth

Supported Places for any undergraduate qualification offered by a university – diplomas, associate degrees.

Government funding has also been extended to students studying at registered higher education providers (incl

TAFE).

Repaying the debt sooner – The HELP loan will still be available, so students will not have to pay their fees

upfront. However, the government has reduced the income threshold so graduates will start making their

repayments sooner – when they are earning approx. $50,638.

For ACU students (if the changes pass in parliament), this means: Current ACU students or those who have

accepted a place at ACU and elected to defer that offer on or before 13 May, 2014, will not be affected as

long as they complete their degree by the end of 2020. Students who accept an offer of enrolment

from 14 May 2014 until 1 Jan 2016 will be charged under the existing arrangements till 31 Dec 2015.

After that, they will be charged under the new arrangements. ACU will be consulting with stakeholders

over the coming months to determine the appropriate fees for ACU’s courses. Other universities will, no

doubt, make statements in due course.

BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS – What is problem-based learning (PBL)? PBL is offered as part of the

Bachelor of Business at the Monash Peninsula campus. PBL uses a small group approach, and focusses on

problems similar to those in the workforce. Working in a small team with a mentor, students create solutions to real

-life problems, learning the principles of each subject. Site visits/industry placement form an integral part of this

approach. Three ‘majors’ are offered at the campus: business strategy, sports manage-ment, and marketing and

communication. Students may also undertake a different major, including accounting, at another Monash campus.

LAW AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE – The annual Melbourne JD Showcase is coming up.

WANT TO STUDY ACCOUNTING? Many accounting firms offer cadetships to Year 12 students

planning to study business/ accounting at university. For example, Deloitte, EY, PwC, KPMG, and many others offer

cadetships. The usual arrangement is that cadetship holders study part-time and work with the company offering the

cadetship part-time. This means that recipients gain real-world work experience, are likely to be offered
