won the 2 finchesraffled off this month. The birds were twofinches white in color

and they are about 4 to6 months old. Thesebirds get to live about 8 to 12 years if properly taken care of. They get very cold right away when the temperature

changes rapidly andfinches are not people friendly. They will notbite but could hurt themselves if not handledproperly such as when one is being moved from

one cage to another. Their most fragile partsare the wings and their small little limbs (legs). They create a little noise that sounds

more like a little car horn such as beep beep. They do this when they feel there is dangercoming or when they are just hungry. Theymake good pets because they are easy to takecare of and the finch food is very inexpensive.

Many tried and tried they did, but in the end at this event we had only one winner. Monique,Dylan, Cheese Burger Ray, Bob, and Paul justcouldnt make the win. There were others whomade no points to score at the horse shoe toss.

This game looks easy but like golf even alittle breeze will throw the plastic horse shoe off the target, the reason that this game whichlooks easy (but is hard to ring a horse shoe) is that the horseshoes are over sized and weighpractically nothing, which makes them very easy to miss their intended target around the smallplastic pole.

This plastic pole was donated by PaulEsquivel and is a Tee Ball stand that was usedby Nomar Garciaparra the super champion inBaseball. Of course this fact has not beenverified, but we like to think it is.

DONT LET HEEL PAIN KEEP YOU OFF YOUR FEET

Our feet are designed to bear a heavy load. But when

they get overused, painful conditions can affect

different parts of the foot, including the heel.

Heel soreness does not always become apparent

immediately. You may not realize that you have a heel

problem until after several hours, or possibly several

days. When you begin to feel heel pain, you should

ease up on regular activities and give the foot some

    rest.

Here are some of the common causes that produce

    pain below the heel.

o Stone bruise:Stepping on a hard object such as a rock or

stone can bruise the fat pad on the underside

of the heel. Pain will dissipate with rest.

o Plantar fasciitis:A condition that results from excess running or

jumping. Over activity can inflame the tissue

band (fascia) connecting the heel bone to the

base of the toes. The pain may feel mild at

first, but flares up when you take your first

steps after resting over night. You may need

to do special exercises, take medication to

reduce swelling and wear a heel pad in your

    shoe.

o Heel Spur:When plantar fasciitis continues for a long

time, a heel spur (calcium deposit) may form

where the fascia tissue band connects to your

heel bone. Your doctor may take an X-ray to

see the bony protrusion, which can vary in

size. Treatment usually involves rest until the

pain subsides, special stretching exercises and

    wearing heel pad shoe inserts.

Pain behind the heel can result when the

Achilles tendon insert into the heel bone

becomes inflamed. Running too much or

wearing shoes that rub the back of the heel are

the usual culprits of this condition.

Pain behind the heel may build slowly over

time, and you may develop a bump on the

back of your heel that feels tender and warm

to the touch. The pain flares up when you first

    start an activity after resting.

Treatment for this type of heel pain includes:

    Stretching your Achilles tendon by

leaning forward against a wall with

your foot flat on the floor and hee

    elevated with the insert.

Using non-steroidal anti-inflammatorymedication to treat pain and swelling.

Placing ice on the back of the heel to

    reduce inflammation.

    I will not forget

    UPKEEP IMPORTANT FOR MAJOR APPLIANCES

Keep your major appliances working their best with

    these maintenance tips from www.RepairClinic.com

o Clean or replace drip pans beneath the coiburners on an electric stove. Dirty drip pans

reduce the heating efficiency of the burners

and make the stove look old and tired. Neve

cover the pans with foil, which can cause an

    electrical short circuit.

o Check the oven door to be sure it closestightly. A tight fitting door improves theefficiency and temperature accuracy of the

oven. If it doesnt close properly, inspect the

door gasket, hinges and door springs, and

    replace if necessary.

o Clean or replace the filters in the range venthood or underneath the over the range

microwave oven. If the filter is too dirty to

clean or is worn out, replace it. Charcoal ai

filters cant be cleaned but instead should be

    replaced yearly.

o Check the tines on the dishwasher rack forrusting. Rust particles can ruin the pump and

seals, causing a hidden leak or pump failure

Inexpensive tine repair kits are available that

come in various colors to match the rack

Racks and rack wheels can also be replaced, if

    necessary.

    THE LUCHTIME CALORIE MIND GAME

Every day at lunch you skip the burger and

fries and seek out a healthier option. A nice salad

from the salad bar. A grilled chicken breast entre.

The submarine sandwich touted with the lowest

fat grams. Yet the pounds refuse to come off.

Parts of the problem could stem from your best

intentions. You may actually be consuming more.

Thats right, according to the food psychology

research of Brian Wansink of Cornell University.

The problem is were creating kind of a diet

busting domino effect. Its not all about what we

eat at a particular meal. We might feel good about

eating a salad at lunch today, but what about the

rest of the day? Why dont we always eat as light

as we think at some fast food restaurants?

The research shows that people are morelikely to order more calories at a restaurant they

consider healthy. Consumers in the study chose

beverages, side dishes and desserts containing up

to 131 percent more calories when the main dish

    was positioned as healthy.

Theres this remarkable health halo created by the

advertisements of a restaurants lower calorie

choices. The problem is people think that

everything here must be healthy even when they

order the 12 inch meatball sub with chips andcookies.

The study focus on menu choices made at

either Subway or McDonalds. When they ate at

Subway, which has a big ad campaign for their

sandwiches with less fat grams, study subjects

thought they it was okay to eat any sandwich

there and then have a high calorie dessert. When,

in fact, some Subway sandwiches contain more

    calories than a Big Mac.

When people thought they were sacrificing bymaking the healthier sandwich choice, they

rewarded themselves by indulging two ways

    allowing themselves add-ons (mayo, cheese,

chips, desserts and full calorie soft drinks) or by

eating a bigger dinner and more snacks later.

Conversely, study subjects who ordered what

they considered indulgent lunch choices at

McDonalds actually ate less later. It turns out i

you eat a 900 calorie lunch you are less likely to

overeat the rest of the day. So how can you enjoy

eating lunch and meet your weight control goals?

Dont add extra cheese, mayo or oil. Choose

water, unsweetened iced tea or a diet soft drink

Split the cookies with a friend. And remember, its

only lunch. Youve got a whole day of eatingahead of you.

BEFORE THE YARD SALE, CHECK YOUR INSURANCE

You have the cash box, the price stickers and

the extra tables for your garage sale. But do you have

    the insurance coverage?

You could be liable if one of your visitors gets

hurt on your property and sues. Before you put out

the garage sales signs, it recommends checking with

your agent or company representative to make sure

you have sufficient liability coverage in your

    homeowners or renters policy.

Typically, a onetime garage sale is covered

under a homeowners policy, but frequent sales would

probably require a separate policy for business liability

or an in home business policy. Below are some tips for

making your sale as safe as possible:

Repair loose railing and cracked concrete. Position sale items so theres plenty of space

    to move around without tripping.

Avoid placing items too close to stairs andledges, where people could fall.

Keep sharp objects such as knives and scissorsout of childrens reach.

Dont sell items that you know are unsafe ofhazardous, including recalled items.

Keep pets indoors. Some dogs can becomevery protective when several strangers are onthe property. If someone is injured, get them

medical attention as soon as possible.

    TALK TO THE DOCTOR

The exam room is cold, and youre sitting there

waiting for the doctor to come in. For some time now

youve been making a mental list of topics youd like to

talk to your doctor about. Your physician comes in

and during the exam you chat about the weather, the

kids and a new movie you both saw. The appointmentwraps up and now you can leave knowing youve done

    your yearly duty.

There are things you should talk to your physician

about during your yearly visit to get that clean bill of

health. Here are some suggestions to help aid the

    discussion:

If you are on medications, ask about side

effects, interactions, etc. If it is a new medication, this

is something that should automatically be verbalized.

However, medications can also lose effectiveness over

time, or develop negative side effects.

Cholesterol levels? Arm yourself with questions. Look

into what kind of tests you might need for your age.

My left arm hurts when I do this If you are

having any symptoms you are worried about, tell your

doctor about them. Ask if you should worry. Find out

if there is a point when you should pick up the phone

and call your doctor to set up an appointment. Ask

when you should go back? Depending on your age and

any test results, your doctor should tell you when he

or she would like to see you again.

Ask your doctor, What should I be doing to

live a healthier lifestyle? Following the tips your

doctor gives you is a great form of preventive

medicine. Be sure to find out if your doctor found

anything during your exam that concerns him or her.

If there is something, try to get detail information

about what type of tests or recommendations he or

    she might have.

If you are having any test done, be sure to find

out what the test is for, how long it will take to get

results and what those results might mean. Be

truthful about any responses to your doctors

questions. He or she isnt there to judge you, and your

honesty is going to determine what actions, testing or

prescriptions your doctor may choose to administer.

Ask your doctor about any difference between

brand-name and generic medications. Generic drugs

may be cheaper. Margaret Beed, physician and health

officer for the San Bernardino county department of

public health, says, For almost every prescription, the

generic version is the same thing. Ask your physician

    or pharmacists for details.

SLEEP PATTERN CAN LEAD TO ACHES

Sleeping in your own bed should be the safest thing

you do all day. But how many times have you woke up

with your neck aching, arm tingling, or our back in

excruciating pain? Howd that happen? Many times

the discomfort you wake up with is the manifestation

of something you did a day or two before.

If you split firewood, sealed your driveway or

planted 100 bulbs, even if you felt fine when you

crawled into bed, you might feel crippled by the timeyou crawl out. Or, the lack of activity could be the

culprit. On the other hand, sleeping too long on one

arm can lead to it being numb and a stiff neck could be

the result of a head twisted awkwardly against the

    pillow.

A lot of people might use to much pillow

where their neck is bent forward so their chin almost

touches their throat area. Your head should line up

with your spine. Even though sleepers get into

troublesome positions, they usually turn or roll overbefore hurting themselves.

But sometimes changing position abruptly or

jerking away after a bad dream can strain a muscle or

pinch a nerve. Youre probably not going to hur

yourself that way, but you never know, especially if

youve already got something going on, like a disc

problem in your back or arthritis in your neck. What

you do in your sleep might set that off. Were

vulnerable during sleep, because we havent loosened

up our muscles. So get fit and check your mattress and pillow

    and avoid utterly sedentary activities.

    Sedentary: inactive, sitting, deskbound

    1. Involving sitting - involving a lot of sitting and

    correspondingly little exercise

    2. Usually sitting - tending to sit most of the time and

    getting little exercise
