Principal’s Pen Just Imagine Imagine your children being part of a school community that is so strong and connected that students mourn having to leave. Imagine having graduates and senior students who speak encouragement and hope into the lives of their younger peers. Imagine having a group of young men and women who are about to leave the school grounds and launch into life beyond, keen to make a mark. You don’t have to imagine. It is what we actually have right here, right now. Last week we said farewell to our Class of 2014. Whilst their Graduation is still to come, we did celebrate with them and their families at a celebratory dinner. During this event we took a walk down memory lane and heard from the students about what this milestone means to them. The students spoke about how they have had to work through a tough year, but they have made it. They honoured staff in how teachers have gone well above their duty to walk this road with them. They reminisced, they laughed, they cried – and the manner with which they relayed their story did themselves, their parents and the College proud. They displayed respect and gratitude, even repeatedly referring to Cornerstone as their family. After spending the night together as a group in the gym with staff, they finished their time on campus by hosting a final assembly. During this time they imparted their wisdom to the next group of students, and shared stories of fun and hope and encouragement to the broader school body. What was incredibly touching was the farewell reception line that saw every student in the Secondary school standing and shaking hands or hugging our Class of 2014. It was a powerful moment and very emotional. It showed the unique and prevailing sense of community that can be embraced by every Cornerstone student and family if they so choose. To our class of 2014 – our prayers for wisdom in your preparations for upcoming exams is assured. Our expectation for you to reach your own personal life goals and leave the legacy you desire is anticipated. Our gratefulness for God bringing each of you into our community here is heartfelt.

Cleaver’s ClangersWhy did the traffic light turn red? You would too if you had to change in the middle of the street!

What did one elevator say to the other elevator? I think I’m coming down with something!

Sponsorship of Mission TripOur Year 10 students are participating in a Mission Trip to Kalgoorlie/Coolgardie in coming weeks, which will see our kids working within a Christian Aboriginal School. We have one student at Cornerstone who is very keen to participate, but due to family hardship and unexpected related expenses, is unlikely to have the funds to attend. If you would like to support such a student, we are seeking a $250 sponsorship to enable their participation. If you would like to help, please contact the front office who can accept donations. Even just a part contribution would be a wonderful assistance.

Year 6 & Year 12 UniformsWhilst the summer uniform is currently in use, this is to remind Year 6 and Year 12 students and parents that they still need a properly fitted winter uniform for one more occasion this year. The Presentation Nights for these students require graduates to have their full formal winter uniform being worn. Please ensure you don’t sell it off just yet, and also make sure that dress lengths are correct before the night. Thanks!

ARK ThanksOur viral ‘Act of Random Kindness’ campaign is continuing. Students from across the Primary school are now showing appreciation and thoughtfulness for staff and other children on a daily basis. Miss Nolan is delighted and wished to express her appreciation to the increasing number of parents who are providing support to their children to enable them to action their ideas. From gifts and flowers, to actions and assistance. It’s just wonderful to see. Let’s see if we can make this viral activity spread beyond the classroom walls and begin to invade our broader community. The potential is limitless!

Primary Interschool CarnivalPrimary students who had performed well at our faction Athletics Carnival travelled to Bunbury last week to compete against the best athletes from other local schools in an Interschool Carnival.Just being selected is an honour, so we celebrate the event and the students who participated.

Market DayMarket Day is almost upon us. If you haven’t had the privilege of being involved before, then you are in for a treat. This is a wonderful day of community and team work that everyone can be a part of.Market Day is the culmination of primary student learning in the Technology and Enterprise subject area, and sees a large sum of money raised to support several charities. Students from Years 1 through to Year 6 will show their understanding of the market place and create a fun-fair of sorts for other students and parents to participate in. Sale of hand-made items as well as games and events will be available.Following the event, each class will take ownership of where they would like their money to be sent. They can elect to spend it on supporting a third world cause, or choose to join with other classes and take on a bigger project such as a water well or purchasing livestock for a impoverished family.A letter will go home closer to the time, but for now, please mark aside Friday November 28th, 1pm as the time to join us in this special annual event. Invite anyone you think may enjoy this day of joining in with the Cornerstone Community.

2015 EnrolmentsThe ‘‘Pebbles at Cornerstone’’ program is currently taking enrolments for 2015.Pebbles is an exciting initiative, available to children in the following age brackets:Semester 1 2015 (running for the full 2015 school year), is for children who were born between July 1, 2011 & December 31, 2011.Semester 2 2015, is for children who were born between January 1 & June 30, 2012.

The program operates for a morning a week, and aims to bridge the gap between playgroup and kindergarten. The class is taught by a fully trained and experienced early childhood teacher. Acceptance into the Pebbles program can also ensure your child has a position in Cornerstone’s popular Kindy program in 2016.

Further to this, we are nearing capacity in some other year groups, but do have vacancies in Year 1, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10 largely due to additional classes being created in 2015. Please let those in your circles be aware that now is the perfect time to take the leap and join us here at the College.Spread the word!

Graduation DinnerAs referred to in Mr Douglas’ Principal’s Pen, a Graduation Dinner was held in honour of our Class of 2014 last week.Students and their families joined together with staff to mark the end of these remarkable student’s secondary education. We are looking forward to their graduation in December, but for now, are praying for them as they prepare to sit their WACE exams. The Class of 2014 is one that we give thanks to God for.

Student WritingBrianna Abbott, a Year 9 student at the College, recently displayed some literary creativity that we think is worthy of displaying right here.Mr Heyes was particularly impressed with her piece and we delight in sharing it with you now.

Summer’s StormThe street was deserted. The last dribble of late afternoon shoppers had scurried to their cars and started home or taken shelter in shops to avoid the downpour. Big, fat drops of water rained down on the abandoned sidewalk mercilessly. The sky was dark. Dreary, grey clouds hung low over the earth, knitted closely together to prevent any hint of blue sky or sunshine from entering the miserable world below. The downpour finally relented and a small figure in a cheery yellow raincoat made a dash across the puddle-riddled street to the welcoming arms of the nearby café. The bell above the door jangled jovially as warmth and the smell of freshly ground coffee enveloped Summer. She peeled off the yellow coat, glancing around at the few other customers huddled over the honey coloured tables, sipping hot tea and cocoa. Outside the heavy rain returned, pouring and gushing off rooves onto the sidewalk in torrents. The road was rapidly becoming a small river, the drains working overtime. Trees tried unsuccessfully to stand tall in the storm of wind and rain. The wind snatched leaves from the trees, unforgivingly whipping them up into a flurry of debris, before the rain forced them down to the saturated ground. Summer sank gratefully into the plush red couch and wrapped her fingers around the steaming mug.
