A number of acts are being judged by an X Factor team of Year 13 students to determine who will make the grand final later in the term. There have also been several entries for our Battle of the Bands competition planned for Saturday next week. We applaud the courage demonstrated by all of these students. Thank you to Trish Copland and parents who supported this tremendous event. We were very pleased with the turnout of families to our successful open night on Monday evening. Our last open night was in 2010, making this an opportunity to show our school community some of the redevelopment that has taken place since then. It was also a chance for our visitors to talk with staff and some of our students and find out a little more about the programmes we offer. For primary aged children it provided another occasion to feel more comfortable at ‘our place’ as they transition to the College. Feedback was extremely positive and we will look to repeat our open night in a couple of years time. Our school counsellor Vicki Patton was farewelled last week. Vicki did outstanding work in an important and challenging role. Her compassion and integrity earned her the genuine respect and trust of students and staff in her 9 years at this school. We wish Vicki all the best for her new counsellor position at Wakatipu High School. We have appointed Warren Lees for the remainder of this term to provide counselling support. As well as being a trained teacher and quite an authority on the game of cricket, Warren has considerable experience with the pastoral care of young people. He will be assisted by our health nurse Karen McCabe until our new counsellor arrives for the start of Term 4. There was excellent commitment and participation at our school cross country last week with some tight competition in the year level events. Congratulations to the winners and well done to all runners who gave their best in their race. It was heartening to see increasingly more senior students competing and promoting house spirit. Clutha house dominated the event and their flag now flies highest in the overall house competition. The Everest Base Camp 2013 Team completed their last ‘formal’ speaking engagement, presenting to around 120 members of Probus this week. Probus are another group that has encouraged and supported our adventure and it was a pleasure to again share some of our experiences and say thank you. Probus generously donated $100 to Phorste Primary school and we will add this to other funds collected from our recent community evening. Our on-going relationship with the community of Phorste is one of the special legacies of our expedition. Our senior students are currently on leave for their practice external exams. Many have set goals of Merit and Excellence Endorsements for their various subjects and NCEA certificate. These exams are an important step in achieving these worthy aims. Year 11 students are privileged to be part of a three day BP Business Challenge next week. Students will work in teams to create a product, set up a company and prepare a business strategy to sell the product. It will be an excellent opportunity to develop cooperative and self management skills while learning how successful companies operate. Auditions are under way for our very own ‘Cromwell’s Got Talent’. A number of acts are being judged by an X Factor team of Year 13 students to determine who will make the grand final later in the term. There have also been several entries for our Battle of the Bands competition planned for Saturday next week. We applaud the courage demonstrated by all of these students. Eight students participated in the Otago Secondary Schools Music Festival in Dunedin on Tuesday. It was a huge day for the group but a most enjoyable one.

Congratulations to the winners and well done to all runners who gave their best in their race. It was heartening to see increasingly more senior students competing and promoting house spirit. This year our school raised $2244.60 for the people of Bougainville, PNG. They are affected by malnutrition, lack of education, civil war, poor sanitation and poverty.

A $40 donation can help establish a kitchen garden to help feed 5 children in Bougainville, PNG.

Thank you also to Paper Plus who provided an incentive prize to a student, drawn at random, who had returned their book with more than $40 raised. We appreciate the support they gave to this cause and the school community.
