Ed, my neighbor next door, isn’t much on geog-raphy, and wasn’t quite sure where Thunder Bay is located. He thought if we were going camping there it must be about a day’s drive away. Hearing it is at the head of Lake Superior, he couldn’t fig-ure out why we would go there to camp. Even when, I said it was to meet our son and his family there, he could not see the point of driving that far to camp. He did concede that sometimes grandparents will drive many hours to see grandkids. I could understand Ed’s vagueness about Thunder Bay because, until 1970, there was no Thunder Bay but the twin cities of Fort William and Port Arthur. In 1970, the two cities and surrounding areas became one as Thunder Bay. I was tell-ing Ed that European settlement there goes back to 1683, and 1717 with French fur trading posts linked with Montreal. In 1803, the North West Company built a major fur trading post at Fort William. That fort has been carefully recon-structed and can be viewed as it was in opera-tion as it was in 1816. It is a great place to become reconnected with the fur trade, native life of the Ojibwa, the French Canadian voyageurs, the inland headquarters for the Scottish owners of the North West Fur Company, the artisans, and farmers at the fur trading post. I told Ed he would like the experience the thrill of firing an authentic 1812 firearm, or to canoe twen-ty minute in a birch bark canoe on the Kaministiquia River. Ed told me that he might consider them both when he is old like me with nothing better to do. Reconnecting with grandchildren that live far away is always good. Going back in time to

what was back when is always educational because there would be no present or future without a past. Only God creates out of nothing through his word. If one looks at the past with an open mind, one discovers great skill, and ingenuity to match our own day. Looking at the history also helps us see what folks were will-ing to give their lives for in other times. Most of all, the past can help us to see that times change but bravery, daring, the chal-lenge of making a living, finding joy and content-ment in life are always ongoing. One must never get stuck in the past or preoccupied with the future for each day we live is a gift to be

savored. We pray in the Lord’s Prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Much of life at all times is having what we need for our lives. We must have food, water, clothing, shelter, but also for the earth to be fruitful and our ability to work for the things we need. There are also a need for a loving family, peace and safety, health, self-control, good weather and government. In the past, it was considered great wisdom to realize that our entire life and that of everyone else depends on God. The Bible says that the Lord sends rain on the just and the unjust. “In Him we live and move and have our being.”

Neighborly Advice According to Edby Raymond Maher

A hug and anexperience 1816 style

While this season won’t last much longer there’s a new getaway experi-ence in the works that is just a hop skip and a jump away.

The province recently announced more than $2 million for the develop-ment of a new, 68 full-service site camp-ground at Greenwater Lake Provincial Park.

Part of the government’s goal of a vi-brant and refreshed provincial parks system, says Premier Brad Wall, this project is scheduled to begin immedi-ately. The new campground is project-ed to open in summer 2015.

“Saskatchewan’s provincial parks are seeing record attendance numbers, and we are responding to this growing de-mand with capital investments like the development of this new campground. This new campground will allow more visitors to get out to our great parks and experience some of the recreational opportunities available in Saskatch-ewan.”

Greenwater Lake Provincial Park currently offers 185 visitor campsites. Public consultations in recent years have identifi ed a need for more camp-sites to accommodate the increased at-tendance to this park. The addition of 68 new, full-service campsites will in-crease camping capacity by more than 35 per cent.

Acadia Construction of Saskatoon has been awarded the campground development contract at Greenwater Lake Provincial Park. The project will involve developing 68 new full service campsites with individual water, sewer, and electrical services. Site work also includes water and electrical distribu-tion, a wastewater collection system, new access and campground roads, four washroom buildings and trails. Currently, work is underway to de-liver a new Hilltop Campground ser-vice centre which is scheduled for com-pletion in time for the 2015 summer camping season. Other recent projects at Greenwater Lake Provincial Park in-clude electrical expansion in Cranberry and Aspen Grove campgrounds, com-pleted in spring 2014. In 2013, the provincial park system set a record 3.7 million visits. Green-water Lake Provincial Park had an at-tendance level of 178,996. The 2014-15 budget has increased funding to pro-vincial parks by 4.6 per cent this year. This includes capital and maintenance spending which will hit record levels with $14.9 million identifi ed for up-grades and new construction projects. Total capital investments in provincial parks have increased 244 per cent in the past seven years, compared to the previous seven year period.

Sask. crops fare well in spite of the weather Crops across the province are in fair to excellent condition according to re-cent statistics. Haying continues in the province and livestock producers now have 42 per cent of the hay crop baled or put into silage, with an additional 49 per cent cut and ready for baling, accord-ing to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly Crop Report. Rain showers and high humidity have delayed haying and decreased hay quality in some areas. Thirteen per cent is rated as excellent in quali-ty, 77 per cent good, eight per cent fair and two per cent poor. Hay yields are slightly below the fi ve-year average (2009-2013). The estimated average hay yields on dry land are reported as 1.3 tons per acre for alfalfa, 1.4 tons per acre for alfalfa/brome hay, 1.1 tons per acre for other tame hay, 0.9 tons per acre for wild hay and 1.7 tons per acre for greenfeed. On irrigated land, the estimated average hay yields are 1.9 tons per acre for alfalfa, 1.8 tons per acre for alfalfa/brome hay, 1.4 tons per acre for other tame hay and 2.3 tons per acre for wild hay and green-

feed. Rain during the week ranged from trace amounts to 84 mm in the Ni-pawin area. Across the province, top-soil moisture on cropland is rated as 14 per cent surplus, 75 per cent ad-equate, 10 per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 10 per cent surplus, 74 per cent adequate, 13 per cent short and three per cent very short. Some areas in the south are drier than normal and will soon need moisture to help crops mature and fi ll. Warm weather has helped advance many crops and the majority are in fair to excellent condition. Storms moved through the prov-ince last week, bringing strong winds, heavy rain and hail. Other sources of crop damage include insects such as grasshoppers and wheat midge and diseases such as root rot and leaf spots. Farmers are busy haying and con-trolling insects and crop disease.
