NEWS LETTERIssue 28 December 2019

Hello everyone,

Today we have had our Sixth Form Taster Day for pupils at school. Y11 pupils have been trying out subjects they are thinking of taking further next year and sharing in some typical Sixth Form enrichment activities. There have been

many interesting subjects on offer and the sessions have generated lots of thoughtful conversations about the next steps for our pupils. Longcroft Sixth Form’s partnership with Woldgate School in Pocklington is allowing us to broaden our offer further this year, with more courses to complete our suite of A-Level and BTEC qualifications. With many options on offer, pupils now have a wide choice of subjects and combinations for university. It has been great to lead sessions in Criminology myself and also to visit some of the enrichment activities and see the range of skills being developed, from political debate to media design, business enterprise to sporting stamina and performing arts!

As you will have seen from the cover story, we also this week had our musical production. This event provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all of the brilliant work that has been undertaken in school and for our pupils to truly shine as they performed in front of a very appreciative audience. I know that every parent, grandparent, sibling, friend and teacher who enjoyed the performance was brimming with pride at the fabulous talent they had seen on stage. Huge thanks go to all of the staff who have been so generous with their time and enthusiasm to support such a great production. Thanks also go to FOLS for their support with refreshments.

As the Christmas season is now underway, I would like to share a copy of the Kindness December Calendar with you (on the back page). It is an alternative to an advent calendar and focuses on the making of small gestures of kindness. As Desmond Tutu says, ‘Do your little bit of good where you are; those little bits together overwhelm the world.’

Have a good weekend, Ms Grant

Longcroft’s contributions, provided by Design Technology pupils led by Ms George, Miss Wrigglesworth and Mr Stamp, are exceptional and reflect not only their ability but their understanding of the value of sustainability. Pupils make decorations during lunchtime clubs.

Miss Wrigglesworth said, “Each year when it comes to decorating our school’s entry to the Christmas Tree Festival, it always marks the start of Christmas for me. There’s a slight break to the usual lessons for a week prior to the festival where my students help to prepare the handmade decorations and we begin to feel that festive cheer! This year’s theme was focused around the environment and recycling - our decorations in textiles used strips of surplus fabrics plaited into pinwheels. Ms George got her Food Prep students mixing up bird seeds and coconut oil, threading cheerios and decorating apples with sunflower seeds to create natural bird feeders. Hopefully this year’s tree will give visitors to the festival some eco-friendly decoration ideas.”

BOOKS ABROAD DONATIONA huge thank you to all our wonderful sixth form students and staff who helped with the collection of books to send to Books Abroad last week.

“What a wonderful load of books for our charity! Three huge pallets have just been delivered and having a quick look through the top boxes they all seem to be ideal for our overseas projects.

Thanks to you and all the staff and pupils involved, it is very much appreciated. We wish you all the best for Christmas and New Year.”

Books Abroad

Books Abroad, a registered charity, collect good quality second hand books from schools, colleges, and universities in order to promote literacy and alleviate the plight of poverty in developing countries.

Longcroft staff and students managed to collect three pallets worth of books as a result of the closure of the Lower School. These were books that no longer fit current specifications but still had educational value. Books abroad are very grateful for our donations.

This week has seen two new members of staff joining the Pastoral Team at Longcroft. Mr Ellis and Mrs Brady have started and have increased the capacity of the Team. Ensuring that pupils feel safe, happy and enjoy their time at Longcroft is of paramount importance. The changes have included a new Care and Support area that includes two new meeting rooms to allow pupils to access support should they require it.

Following the two new appointments, each year group will have a dedicated non-teaching member of staff who will support the Year Leader in Pastoral Care and Achievement for that year. Care and Achievement Coordinators will have mobile phones that parents can contact. If there is no answer, please leave a voicemail or text and you will receive a call back as soon as possible.

CREATIVITY IN TEXTILES

Last week we reported on Textiles pupils’ visit to Harrogate’s Knitting and Stitching Show. This week we feature some examples of work produced by our fabulous pupils, who led by Miss Wrigglesworth, learn intricate skills and develop both lovely design work and finished products.

Miss Wrigglesworth said, “This year I am impressed with the dedication of my GCSE Textiles students, clearly evident within the quality of work and positive learning environment within lessons. If you were to visit a GCSE lesson you’d see confident and creative seamstresses!”

YORKSHIRE CUP TRIUMPH!Longcroft Year 8s and 9s played their second Yorkshire Cup Rugby League match at home against Beckfoot Oakbank from Keighley this week.

Beckfoot had some strong, physical players and got off to a good start, scoring two tries to take an early lead. Hayden Todd who was outstanding in the match at Wakefield was again a tower of strength in defence and attack. He took the game by the scruff of the neck, scoring Longcroft’s first try after stealing the ball in the tackle and then forcing his way over the line. Captain Jack Charles proved to be consistent with the boot again, converting all of Longcroft’s tries into six pointers, which proved crucial in the end.

After going in at half time 10-6 down, Todd again was the scorer, putting Longcroft in the lead 12 - 10 after some good pressure in defence saw him touchdown next to the uprights. Harrison Glendinning made a fantastic break from his own half and played the ball deep in Beckfoot’s territory. Two plays later Glendinning finished off a fine move extending the lead to 18-10.

Beckfoot came back with some physical defence and strong running. They scored two tries and looked favourites to win the match with a 20-18 lead. However in the dying seconds Longcroft found one of their favourite moves in the playbook and Jack Charles put Alex Argent-Moss into a hole. The full back stepped his opposite number to score and the conversion by Charles saw Longcroft once again victorious, winning 24 – 20. Well done to all the boys who never gave up and fully deserved the victory. We have our third and final group match against Honley, at home on Thursday 9th January. A win would see Longcroft qualify for the Yorkshire Cup semi-final and a place in the National Cup competition.

YEAR 7 FOOTBALL UPDATE

SUPERSTAR ATHLETES!On Tuesday evening, Longcroft pupils travelled to Bridlington to take part in a Sports Hall Athletics event. The Year 7 and 8 girls’ teams and the Year 7 and 8 boys’ teams competed against other schools in the East Riding as they performed in a variety of track and field events. The Year 7 girls athletics team performed exceptionally well and showed great team spirit as they encouraged and supported each other in their events. The Longcroft Year 7 girls were victorious and were able to take 1st place out of all the schools. This is a great achievement for the Year 7s, considering it is their first athletics competition as a team.

The Year 8 girls also performed well with some great stand out performances. They narrowly missed out on 1st place but took a very well deserved 2nd place. The Year 7 boys came 4th overall and the Year 8 boys came 3rd. Well done to all those involved!

On Friday Longcroft travelled to Goals in Hull to compete in the Year 7 5 a side boys and girls’ football competitions.

The boys were drawn in a group with Beverley Grammar, South Hunsley, Wolfreton, Market Weighton, Headlands and Withernsea. After some excellent results in recent weeks the boys struggled to play their usual free flowing football with lots of passes going awry. Despite some tight games which didn't quite go our way, the team continued to give everything they had to compete. Unfortunately we didn't finish in the top two this time and therefore didn't make the semi finals. The boys now look forward to two more league matches after Christmas as well as a quarter final East Riding Cup match against South Hunsley.

A massive well done to our Year 7 girls’ 5-a-side squad on their third place efforts! The girls took on a total of six teams and overall scored a total of 25 goals! The girls got off to a fantastic start and didn't lose a single game in the first round against Headlands, Woldgate, Hessle, Howden and Driffield. The girls did amazingly and finished in the top two, meaning they reached the semi-finals. Their outstanding efforts were just not enough to beat a strong South Hunsley team who went on to win the tournament. The girls could not have worked any harder! Miss Megeary and Mr Martin are so incredibly proud of their unbelievable football skills, team work and sportsmanship that they consistently demonstrated throughout the tournament. Well done girls!
