e-News June 2019

Message from EO

In this edition, I thought it relevant to provide you with a snapshot of our current and loyal members whose on-going support is always greatly appreciated. As a member based Association, the CMAWA relies on the income it receives from membership subscriptions to maintain operations. Putting it quite simply and in our current situation, if our membership levels continue to fall, the future sustainability of the CMAWA would be indeed questionable.

Our membership levels for 2019 currently stand at 34 Suppliers and 124 Cabinet Makers. You will agree, this is well below the potential numbers we could and should have, considering we are a state wide Association. Whilst the Committee and Management are constantly spreading the word on the benefits for partnering with CMAWA, the take up of new members is slow. We do not have a dedicated ‘sales team’ behind the scenes and perhaps this could resolve this issue. However, any expenditure of our member funds needs careful deliberation by the Committee.

In the meantime, you might all be able to assist our cause. The referral incentive, brought in with our new Constitution makes it easy and rewarding for existing members to encourage a new member to join us. Just refer one new member and receive a 25% discount on your annual membership fee. Put forward four new members in any one year, your subsequent annual membership is completely free. It’s not expected to be a time consuming task for you, just refer them to me or our website and I’ll do the rest. Let me know though if you do refer someone for membership so I can make a note.

There are massive benefits if we can increase our membership levels but two important one are:

• Gives CMAWA a louder voice for Advocacy purposes and when negotiating with Government for better and fairly conditions for our Industry—Strength in Numbers

• Gives us a higher potential to secure community or Government funding for CMAWA projects or services. One that comes to mind is raising Consumer awareness and education on the benefits for selecting a CMAWA member.

• Your opinions matter greatly, so if anyone has any further suggestions or ideas on how we can increase our memberships to a more acceptable level, be great to hear from you. Regards Sheila Payne (EO)

Awards and information you should know

The Fair Work Commission has increased the national Minimum Wage by 3% effective

from 1 July 2019.The minimum wage increase will have an administrative and financial

impact on the bottom line as it does each year. However this shouldn't be a time to

consider reducing staff numbers or increase product cost.

Being creative with cost savings and identifying new efficiencies can help your business

manage these type of increases. For instance, you may consider to reduce overtime

rates payable by ensuring your employees ordinary hours are within the ordinary span

of hours or rostering provisions outlined in the relevant modern awards. Also, by

ensuring employees receive their meal breaks or required breaks between shifts, the

potential costs of additional loading being payable to staff will be reduced.

The Minimum wage is the absolute lowest that an employee can be paid. The current

minimum in Australia is $740.80 per week which equates to a minimum hourly rate of

$19.49.as set on May 30th 2019.. Under a Modern Award, the wages for each

classification are the lowest possible wage rate. If an employer would like to pay above

this minimum rate, both the employee and employer need to be aware of any increases

to the Award rates when the Fair Work Commission release adjustments.

This is important because as long as the employee is being paid above the award rate,

the employer does not need to increase the employees wats on 1st July because the

base requirement is already being met.

Overtime is usually any work in excess of 38 hours per week and is often paid at a

higher wage. Instead of being paid an overtime rate, an employee may be able to take

time off instead. This is called time in lieu (TOIL)
