Now that the 2016 presidential election is over it’s understandable that, a large percentage of the American population will need time to come to terms and hopefully accept the outcome. For many, it might take weeks or months to heal from the onslaught of vitriol that defined the presidential election, and there are still many others who may take longer to recover from one of the darkest periods in our American political system. Many not-for-profit human service organizations might be part of those currently trying to recover, but as

we often tell the people we serve, we need to try to move forward to a better place.

There’s a great deal of uncertainty about the Trump administration and its policies relative to the broad range of social problems that America needs to address. Nearly 47 million Americans utilize our nation’s emergency food assistance programs, including regional food banks like Long Island Cares, Inc.—The Harry Chapin Food Bank. Although I don’t expect President Trump to turn his back on the issue of hunger and food insecurity, it needs to be seen what policies and programs his administration will support and which ones might be targeted for funding reductions. We do know that President Trump campaigned on a promise to reduce taxes for the working class, create millions of new jobs, increase spending for defense, and improve our infrastructure. All of these bold initiatives will cost money and the uncertainty is where the funds will come from.

We all know that if you increase spending in one area you have to decrease spending in another area.

What we do know is that President Trump is a supporter of a faith-based focus towards those in need as illustrated in his position of September 28, 2016 in which he said;

“A Trump administration will always protect the conscience rights of faith-motivated helpers, healers and laborers in the many vineyards where the American flag stands as a beacon of help and hope. Those motivated by their faith to help the less fortunate should never be discriminated against in any government program on the basis of their moral and religious beliefs. That will never happen in a Trump administration.”

In relation to the issue of hunger, we will know more about how the administration will respond based upon who will be appointed the new Secretary of Agriculture and Secretary of Health and Human Services. The USDA provides funding for The Emergency Food Assistance Program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), The National School Lunch

Program (NSLP), the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and the Summer Food Service Program for Children, all programs that impact food banks across the country. Any reductions in funding will have a significant impact upon people struggling with food insecurity. Clearly, the initial policy focus of HHS will be on revisions to The Affordable Health Care Act to insure that 20 million Americans don’t lose their health insurance.

President Trump spoke a great deal about turning around our cities during the campaign by creating new jobs and lifting people out of poverty. However, the problems he identified are also present in suburban areas, like Long Island, where more than 300,000 people are experiencing food insecurity. The Trump Administration must develop a bold and realistic plan to lift people out of poverty and hunger which should include creating new and diverse jobs, improving educational opportunities, increasing the federal minimum wage, and maintaining the national safety net of entitlement programs for those in need. The President’s agenda must be inclusive of all Americans.

Long Island Cares, Inc. Receives $50,000 Grant Through Newsday Charities Will Fund Their Mobile School Pantry Program

Long Island Cares, Inc., The Harry Chapin Food Bank recently received a $50,000 grant through Newsday Charities, a McCormick Foundation Fund. The grant will support the operations of the

regional food bank’s Mobile School Pantry program that provides emergency food to children and families in the Brentwood Union Free School District at times when school is not in session. This is the second year in a row that Newsday Charities has supported this important program. Since the start of the current school year this past September, Long Island Cares’ Mobile School Pantry has provided emergency food for 774 families including meals for 1,820 children.

“Our Mobile School Pantry was implemented with the full cooperation of administrators and teachers in the Brentwood Union Free School District,” said Dr. Jessica Rosati, Chief Program Officer for Long Island Cares. “The Mobile School Pantry visits seven of the eleven elementary schools in the Brentwood community once a month during the week to provide food and supplies to families in need. Brentwood staff support has joined Long Island Cares staff and volunteers to support the effort. In the warmer months, we are joined by the food bank’s mascot,

AsparaGus the Friendly Dragon who makes our visit quite exciting for the children.”

According to Robin Amato, Chief Development Officer for Long Island Cares, “Our Mobile School Pantry was started in 2013 with corporate donations. Since then, the program continues to rely upon private donations to maintain the services we provide in Brentwood. We’re delighted that the Newsday Charities, a McCormick Foundation Fund continues to recognize the issue of children’s food insecurity and hunger as a major focus for their generous funding support. The number of children that face high food insecurity on Long Island has increased to 89,000. Because of the support provided by Newsday Charities, we’re able to continue to provide critical programs like the Mobile School Pantry to children and their families. This program gives them additional access to healthy foods in a place where they feel comfortable and safe.”

For more information about the Mobile School Pantry and other programs provided by Long Island Cares visit www.licares.org or call (631) 582.FOOD.

Long Island Cares, The Harry Chapin Food Bank to Benefit from Additional $115 Million in Support for Commodity Food Purchases from the USDA As the end of the federal fiscal year approached on September 30, the USDA announced multiple bonus commodity purchases totaling up to $115 million. The purchases bring the total amount of USDA bonus commodity authorizations in FY 2016 to $320 million. Long Island Cares, Inc. administers The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) for the Long Island region, and they have announced that the regional food bank will be awarded some of the additional bonus food to Long Island to help feed the more than 316,000 people impacted by hunger and food insecurity in Nassau and Suffolk County.

“The recent purchases announced include excellent quality, nutritious food including orange juice, cheese, raisins, chicken, eggs, and blueberries which are all foods that our community-based member agencies want,” said Peter Braglia,

Chief Operations Officer for Long Island Cares. “While bonus commodity purchases by the USDA are certainly only possible when a need for agriculture market support exists, the advocacy work of Feeding America and food banks like Long Island Cares in communicating the positive impact TEFAP foods have on our agencies and clients has certainly helped strengthen the USDA’s willingness to make bonus commodity purchases and to distribute the food through TEFAP,” Braglia said.

Locally, Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and Representatives Gregory Meeks and Kathleen Rice signed onto the letter from Congress to the USDA requesting the additional support for the TEFAP program at the request of Long Island Cares, Inc.

Long Island Cares has received $50,000 from the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation to address food insecurity on Long Island. The donation is part of a program – called Fill Your Tank – that celebrates Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s 60th anniversary by providing $60 million over six years to fight hunger around the globe. The Fill Your Tank program donations made locally are determined by local Enterprise operations.

Beyond donations, Enterprise Rent-A-Car is supporting the Fill Your Tank program with a hunger awareness and local engagement campaign. Hunger is often invisible and the campaign helps make hunger in our communities more visible.

In presenting the donation, Todd Stockton, Vice President for Enterprise’s New York Group said, “Enterprise Rent-A-Car is woven into the fabric of the Long Island and food insecurity is an issue for our community. This donation to Long Island Cares will support those in our community who need a little help to reach to their full potential.”

Globally, one in nine people don’t get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life, according to the World

Food Programme. On Long Island 316,000 residents including 89,000 children live in a state of food insecurity, which means they do not have reliable access to adequate amounts of safe, good-quality, nutritious food.

Paule Pachter, CEO of Long Island Cares said, “We’re extremely grateful for this very generous donation that will go a long way in assisting us in our mission to provide emergency food and direct support services to the many Long Islanders in need especially as we approach the holiday season.” “Corporations like Enterprise are essential to the work we do in the community and they set the bar very high for other major corporations to follow in the fight against hunger.”

Disney Company Awards Long Island Cares $15,000 Grant to Increase Access to Fresh Produce for Children

Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank has received a $15,000 grant from Disney to increase access to fresh produce as part of a

national initiative between Disney and Feeding America. The funds will be used to support the regional food bank’s Mobile School Pantry program that assists families within the Brentwood School District by increasing the delivery of fresh produce to children experiencing high food insecurity, especially during times when school is closed on weekends and holidays.

“We’re very excited to have been selected to receive this grant from Disney as part of their continued commitment to making nutritious foods, including fruits and vegetables, available to people in need, ,” said Robin Amato, Chief Development Officer at Long Island Cares. “Our organization continues to place a high priority on healthy

eating and access to fresh produce as part of our Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables program, and by dedicating a large percentage of our funding from the NYS Department of Health – HPNAP program towards purchasing locally grown produce. The additional funding from Disney will go a long way in helping us increase our efforts.”

“Since the beginning of this new school year in September, our Mobile School Pantry has provided food to 548 children in the Brentwood community in collaboration with the Brentwood School District,” said Dr. Jessica Rosati, Chief Program Officer at Long Island Cares. “Last year, 1,631 families benefitted from this program, which represented a 32% increase in the number of families receiving support from the regional food bank. With these additional funds we can increase the amount of healthy vegetables and fruits available to the children we’re assisting in the community who are often at risk for poor nutrition and illness.”

Long Island Cares receives $200,000 Grant from Capital One Bank to Support Children’s Breakfast Food Trucks

Capital One has awarded Long Island Cares, Inc., The Harry Chapin Food Bank with a $200,000 grant to support the regional food bank’s Mobile Children’s Breakfast Food Trucks. In making the announcement, Jessa Thomas, Community Affairs Officer for Capital One stated, “It’s a privilege to be able to provide community support for Long Island Cares’ Mobile Children’s Breakfast Food Truck Program. At Capital One, we believe strongly in building the communities where we live and work. We know that Long Island Cares shares our passion and we are honored to present this contribution to them. Their work in the community is an inspiration.”

Since launching their two Mobile Children’s Breakfast Food Trucks in April, Long Island Cares has provided a healthy breakfast to nearly 7,000 children during times when school is closed. “Our food trucks are a first-of-its-kind program among the nation’s food banks to provide children that are food insecure with a healthy, grab-n-go breakfast when they are most in need,” said Dr. Jessica Rosati, Chief Program Officer for Long Island Cares. “The additional funding from Capital One will support food purchases and other operational costs in order to keep the food trucks on the road for a long time to come and we

are extremely grateful to Capital One for their very generous support of our work,” said Robin Amato, Long Island Cares’ Chief Development Officer.

The Mobile Children’s Breakfast Food Trucks work collaboratively with several of Long Island Cares’ member agencies that are located in high-needs communities. The trucks provide a nutritious, ready-to-eat breakfast consisting of cereal, low-fat milk, yogurt, fresh juices, snack bar and fresh fruit. In September, Long Island Cares and the Grammy® Award –winning superstar sibling trio – THE BAND PERRY – teamed up with My Country 96.1 to support Long Island Cares Inc., The Harry Chapin Food Bank with the “The Food Drive to Stomp out Bullying.”

Giving back is always a priority for The Band Perry, and with this collaboration they helped to spread the word to “stomp out bullying” by performing a free special concert at Samoset Middle School, who collected a whopping 6,274 pounds of food to support Long Island Cares. The school also won a special anti-bullying seminar for their school to help raise awareness and take action to stomp out bullying. The two students who raised the most food individually also got tickets and a limousine ride to The Band Perry’s concert at the NYCB Theater at Westbury.

Paule Pachter, CEO of Long Island Cares said, “It was very exciting to work with The Band Perry and our partners at My Country radio to raise awareness about bullying in schools and also food insecurity on Long Island. The Band Perry has used their

success to support several important causes in addition to Bullying Awareness and Global Hunger. We’re absolutely thrilled that they have chosen to support Long Island Cares by getting our school districts involved in both of those causes as well.”

John Caracciolo, CEO of JVC Media LLC., parent company of My Country 96.1 FM also commented, “It is so easy to work with Long Island Cares and their dedicated team of professionals that work to make Long Island a better place for all. The entire team at JVC Broadcasting is always excited and proud to be involved in these kinds of programs.”
