“A socially responsible neighbour…” Our community investment principles are to be known as a socially responsible neighbour—bringing value to NOVA Chemicals and the communities where we have a presence. We invest in the well-being of our communities by lending a hand to organizations dedicated to making a difference and improving the overall quality of life.

Earth Day—Tree Planting

On Earth Day, April 22, 35 volunteer employees from the region joined together at the St. Clair River site to plant trees. The trees were donated by the Genesis Pipeline Extension Project to the Earth Day team to replace those destroyed by the local Emerald Ash Borer disease.

A safety meeting was held prior to the planting which included discussions on personal protective equipment, safe passage across ditches to the planting sites, avoidance of high traffic areas, identification of tripping hazards, using the buddy system, job rotation and site cleanup. Before the day’s end, 168 trees were successfully planted in a safe and responsible manner.

Responsible Care is at the foundation of our culture and our business model. We value the safety and well-being of our co-workers, communities and the environment. Everything we do includes the goal of sustaining them for the future. We believe in a zero-injury and illness workplace. We work to minimize risk throughout the product life cycle, including risk to health, safety and the environment. We collaborate with others to improve the ability of plastics to protect products, people and the environment.

The Children’s Auxiliary

The Children’s Auxiliary was invited by the NOVA Chemicals Information Technology (IT) network for the team’s first face to face meeting in Sarnia on February 12. As part of their volunteer work in the community, the NOVA Chemicals IT group worked to assemble approximately 300 activity bags. These bags will be used at Bluewater Health where children are waiting medical treatment.

CANstruction Event

NOVA Chemicals was a proud sponsor of the 2nd annual CANstruction event in support of Sarnia’s local food bank, The Inn of the Good Shepherd. On Saturday, March 2, NOVA Chemicals team “inNOVAte” constructed a train made entirely out of canned goods. Voting was open and the NOVA Chemicals team was thrilled to hear that they were the recipient of the People’s Choice award! A total of 38,000 cans were used and $6,500 was raised—all of which will be donated to The Inn of the Good Shepherd.

Team members included (from left to right): Ati Powell, Robin Harkins, Jennifer Strydonck, Sabrina Giovinazzo, Ryan Devries, Donna Poon, Tracy Tiernay, Lisa Rekman and Nilay Mehta (not pictured).

Marysville, Michigan Fire Department

In 2012, NOVA Chemicals was pleased to partner with the Marysville Michigan Fire Department, in sending 2 firefighters to the Lambton College Industrial Fire School. Specialized training not normally taught in traditional fire academies is required due to the unique risks of chemical storage and pipeline and railway transport.

*New* Safety Improvement Strategy

NOVA Chemicals recently began the implementation of a new Safety Improvement Strategy. The program was designed to reinforce our commitment to the health and safety of each and every worker at our sites. This safety plan includes a full-day training session for all employees, a roll-out of new hazard recognition tools and an enhanced contractor safety program.

Junior Achievement of Southwestern Ontario

Each year NOVA Chemicals sponsors the Junior Achievement (JAS) program. This program provides an opportunity for youth to explore their career possibilities, to learn how to manage their finances, start a company and realize their potential. Volunteers (such as NOVA Chemicals’ Nilay Mehta, shown at right) guide and act as role models to the students to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to become innovative, productive, and contributing citizens. Please visit http://jacan.org/ if you are interested in becoming a volunteer.

UWO Capstone Engineering Design Competition 2013

The 8th annual Capstone competition was held at Western’s Research Park in Sarnia-Lambton on March 22. 15 teams of students presented their project designs to volunteer judges, fellow students, faculty, and attendees from local industries and government. In conjunction with a monetary donation, we were pleased to be able to participate by sending a NOVA Chemicals employee to sit on the panel of judges.

Walpole Island Educational Program

On October 5, 2012, NOVA Chemicals was pleased to make a $10,000 donation towards the Bkejwanong Eco-Keepers (BEK) program. This is an ongoing summer environmental education and work experience program provided for the youth of the Walpole Island First Nation (WIFN). The program empowers WIFN youth through training and hands-on activities to provide interesting and enriching community-based work experience, develop capacity and the knowledge and skills necessary for carrying out environmental initiatives, and empower WIFN youth to be positive role models and give back to the community.

NOVA 2020

NOVA Chemicals held the fourth in a series of public open houses on Thursday, May 9 at the Corunna Legion. These open houses provide an opportunity to speak with the community about our business, facilities and the progress of our growth projects.

Phase 1

Corunna Revamp

To date, scheduled heater conversions have begun and shop fabrication of the new steel and piping are well underway. New equipment is being delivered weekly and installations on completed foundations are on schedule. NOVA Chemicals has retained Kel-Gor Limited to complete fabrication of the new fractionation column. Once complete, the column will be 270 feet tall, 13 feet in diameter and weigh 1.1 million pounds. Transportation of the new column to the Corunna site is tentatively scheduled for this July, with erection of the tower to closely follow.

Genesis Pipeline

Genesis Pipeline Extension Project pre-construction activities began in February, with the construction team now fully mobilized in the field. Activities will continue throughout the spring with commissioning and startup activities anticipated in July.

As with all of our operations, construction activities are being conducted with the utmost consideration for public safety and environmental integrity. Acoustic fencing was installed in residential areas to alleviate excessive noise and disruption during pipeline construction. Temporary Silt Fencing was installed along the entire right-of-way as a sediment control device to protect water and the endangered Butler Gardner Snakes.

Production capacity of 5.1 Mlb/day of ethylene will be maintained, along with the flexibility to maintain some heavy feedstock processing capability. The project will have minimal impact to the Corunna Site’s existing physical ‘footprint’. Current construction workforce is at approximately 120; with a peak workforce of 200 workers expected late this summer.

Other notable modifications to the facilities include the ethane feed systems, cracking heaters, fuel gas system and steam boiler. Cracking heaters and boilers will be upgraded with new burners which will lower emissions of nitrogen oxides. A shift in fuel source will also lower emissions of sulphur dioxide.

NOVA 2020 continued

Phase 2

Proposed Corunna Expansion and new Polyethylene Facility

Feasibility studies and engineering work continue in support of a new world-scale Advanced SCLAIRTECH™ technology polyethylene facility in the region. Expanding upon our proprietary technology, would allow us to provide greater supply reliability for our customers. This potential facility would have the capacity of approximately 400 kt/yr. In order to support a potential new polyethylene facility in the region, an expansion of the Corunna cracker facility would be required. This could involve an expansion of ethylene production by up to 40%.

We are currently investigating several locations in North America, including Sarnia and the U.S. Gulf Coast, and

expect to have a determination of the location later this year.

Our preferred Sarnia location for this facility is on land owned by NOVA Chemicals, at the south end of our existing Corunna facility off Rokeby Line. The project could create approximately 90 full-time jobs and at peak construction, would require about 1,500 project construction workers. Final project feasibility is expected during 2014.

As we move forward and continue to invest in our people and our facilities, we also remain committed to being a socially responsible neighbour. As with all of our operations, construction activities are being conducted with the utmost consideration for the public safety and environmental integrity.

We would like to thank our neighbours and the Sarnia-Lambton community for their continued support as we move forward.

I would like to take this opportunity to provide you with an update on the operations of our facilities in St. Clair Township. Keeping the communities in which we operate informed is part of being a good neighbour and is important to us at NOVA Chemicals.

Recently our St. Clair River site underwent a safe and successful scheduled turnaround. Regularly scheduled turnarounds allow us to inspect, clean, replace and make new capital and technology improvements to ensure ongoing safe and reliable operations.

We continue to make progress on phase 1 of our NOVA 2020 Growth Projects and we will know later this year if a new world-scale Advanced SCLAIRTECH™ technology polyethylene facility will be built in the region. This is an exciting time for our eastern operations. We expect to begin processing ethane from the Marcellus Shale formation later this year which will provide an opportunity to ensure our continued competitive and economic viability.

To date, we have held four Public Open Houses, which provided us with an important opportunity to dialogue with you, our community members, answer questions and seek input with regard to our operations and growth projects.
