Take Time to Play
For babies, the best toy is you. Just looking at your face and hearing your voice is play for
your new baby, especially when you are smiling.
Toddlers love big body play.
They are using their bodies to explore and learn about the
world. Spend time outdoors, where they have plenty of space
to master new skills.
Preschool age children are
creative and imaginative in their play. Through pretend play your
child learns how to take turns, share responsibility, and
problem-solve.

Did You Know?
Take Time to Talk
Children need opportunities to use language. The more they hear you talk to
them, the more words they will use. Responding to your infant’s smile, coos and babbles is the beginning of language development. When they make a sound and you make it back, connections are forming in the brain. These connections will only be made with face-to-face interactions. Take time to enjoy stories and books with young children. Sometimes pointing to pictures and naming objects and other times reading all the words on the page, aloud. Simple games like peek-a-boo, will peak your infants interest and they will watch as you form words, as you speak to them. The more they hear, the more they try to form new words. Use routine times to share language with your child: getting dressed, eating breakfast, travelling in the car. When you visit an EarlyON Centre, you will notice that the Educators spend time talking to children as they play. You know your child best and you too, can take the time to play and talk with them. Describe what you see them doing: “you are pouring water”; “shake, shake the bottle”; “roll, squeeze, pound the playdough”. The more words they hear, the more words they will say.

As you might have heard, Family Support Programs including Ontario Early Years Centres, Parent Literacy Centres and Family Resource Centres have been transformed to EarlyON Child and Family Centres effective January 1, 2018. The Ministry of Education is funding the County of Lambton to oversee the delivery of EarlyON Centres. During 2018, the County of Lambton is working with existing service providers to continue the delivery of services throughout Lambton County and identifying areas where change is necessary to build the capacity of the system.
What does this mean for families?
Our FREE programs for families with children birth to six years will continue to run as usual, with sites throughout Lambton County.
The Registered Early Childhood Educators that you know and trust will continue to deliver EarlyON programs.
Community partners will continue to meet with families in their community, offering advice, support, assessments and therapies.
Educators will continue to work with families and the community, to provide services that support the growth and development of young children and families.
EarlyON Centres are places where parents and caregivers can start making connections and build relationships that are essential to realizing a child’s full potential. Where they can learn, grow and connect.
Children can learn, play, laugh, be curious, make friends and engage with
EarlyON Educators are posting photos of daily
experiences at our centres. Information on
hours of operation and upcoming events are
also posted.
